A Secret Hidden in a Kings’ Song /Shir HaMelech

“I am my beloved’s and my beloved is mine,” –

Song of Songs /Shir HaShirim, 6:3.

Many phrases from The Song of Songs written by King Solomon, have been used in weddings for centuries.

What does it truly mean and why is this particular verse so popular when it comes to weddings?

While reading this think in terms not of an earthly wedding and marriage covenant but of the marriage covenant of the Lamb and wedding feast of the Coming King of Kings.

Solomons Song is a type and shadow of our future when we are finally together with the one whom our soul loves. He gave His life for His bride – US.

It’s a song of redemption, of selfless love that we are learning from Him as we walk along the WAY and we are no longer our own, we are His forever.

Ani Lo & Dodi Li  

I am His & My Beloved is mine

Dodi Li V’Ani Lo – My beloved is mine and I am His

Ani Lo – I am His – it is the summary of all that is required of us.

1Cor.6:19-20 You are not your own; you were bought at a price. 

No human being can stand that unless he is identified with Jesus Christ. We are not sanctified for ourselves. We are called into intimacy with the gospel, and things happen that appear to have nothing to do with us. But God is getting us into fellowship with Himself. Let Him have His way. If you refuse, you will be of no value to God in His redemptive work in the world, but will be a hindrance and a stumbling block.

The first thing God does is get us grounded on strong reality and truth. He does this until our cares for ourselves individually have been brought into submission to His way for the purpose of His redemption. O. Chambers.

I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. Galatians 2:20

 

However the secret to fulfilling that, is, Dodi Li – that our beloved is truly ours.

In the Hebrew tradition of Israel during the wedding ceremony, the Bride must say Dodi Lo, prior to saying, Ani Lo.

This is because she must first have the apocalypse/revelation that her beloved belongs to her, then the easier it will be and the more she will be able to and want to give herself to her beloved and visa versa.

Here-in is the secret to living our life in Yeshua Messiah, our bridegroom. If we receive His love for us we will easily give our love to Him. The more understanding we gain of Dodi Lo, that He is ours, the more our lives will become, Ani Lo/His. The deeper the personal apocalypse/revealing, the easier it will be for us to yield our lives to Him completely. This in turn will bring spiritual intimacy to our relationship, changing our perspective and causing the desire to surrender to His Will, Plan and Purpose for our lives and not live for ourselves and our own future goals. 

If he is hers, she will be his and if she is his, he will be hers. It’s reciprocal and complimentary at the same time.

Likewise, if He is ours we will be His and if we are His then He will be ours.

Many have pointed out that the initials of the words in this phrase spell out “Elul”…

Any new Jewish month (a lunar month) has special prayers such as Hallel, especially for weddings. Traditionally a bride and groom are to fast on their wedding day. However, there is an exception: Rosh Chodesh.

And this month’s new month of Elul, has a lot of meaningful significance in Judaism.

If it’s on Rosh Chodesh Elul, it means the bride and groom wouldn’t have to fast, as some couples customarily do.

So as already mentioned, many say that Elul אלול stands for “Ani L’Dodi V’Dodi Li” ״אני לדודי ודודי לי״ which means “I am my beloved’s and my beloved is mine.

This phrase is very popular within both Jewish and non-Jewish weddings.

When reading the entire poem, it is a beautiful love story between a man and a woman. Relationships are always based on give and take, and one of equality between both partners – a balance. So too, a husband and wife should always give and receive love and support.

Often this is read as a metaphor of the love between the Jewish people/grafted in believers and God. 

There’s a Hebrew word that means soul mate.

also meaning – Meant to be.

Natural soul mates are only temporary on earth, God is our basheret, our true soul mate, He is the real lover of our souls.

In Messiah, our Dodi Li will manifest our Ani Lo. He belongs to us and the more we receive His love for us the more we will give of ourselves to Him.

As we open our hearts to fully understand Dodi Lo, our lives will become the reflection of Ani Lo, belonging completely to Him. Then, how we live and what we do, will no longer be a fleshly struggle of the soul; it will be easy, for it will flow out from His love.

An Ani Lo life, is the result of a Dodi Li heart, for the knowledge that He is ours creates that life of divine love.

As the bride of Yeshua we are to say and know, that as we fill our hearts with this Dodi Li understanding – our lives will soon become Ani Lo.

My beloved is to me and I am to Him –

My Beloved is Mine and I am His –

Simply Dodi Li V’Ani Lo

This is in a nutshell everything required of us in God.

It’s the foundation of everything we are to be and do in Him.

It encompasses our calling, consecration, dedication, works, sacrifices, ministry. As we are in covenant with Him we have to honor that covenant form our side too.

Just as when God called to Moses,

Moses reply was the correct covenant response. It was immediate and he did not hesitate. We are to be as quick to respond when He speaks to us – no hesitation – just simple obedience. He will never ask us to do anything that He has not equipped us to do.

May the God of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, equip you with everything good for doing his will, and may he work in us what is pleasing to him, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Hineni expresses readiness to give ourselves in total availability. This answer will mark a turning point in the lives of those of us who respond to The Father with this word.

Moses wasn’t the only one to say Hineni:

Samuel said Hineni – I’m listening.

Isaiah said Hineni – Send me.

Hineni is the right WAY to respond to our Heavenly Father whenever He calls, it should always be our desire to fulfill His Commands in directing the path for our lives.

All that remains is for us to surrender all to our beloved and cry…

It was hard to know whether the shop advertising the sale of ice cream was open or closed!

Clearly the sign was broken but its funny how things become stuck in the brain! Even now, whenever a sign beckons

it raises a question.

Are they really

The Daleth (dalet) Dalet (dāleth, also spelled Daleth or Daled) is the fourth letter of many Semitic alphabets, including Phoenician, Aramaic, Hebrew letter D, is ד , the dalet,” meaning, he who possesses nothing of his own!

In man’s service of God, the dalet characterizes shiflut, lowliness, the consciousness of possessing nothing of one’s own.

Selflessness.

Together with the awareness of our own power of free choice, we must be aware that He gives us the power to achieve success, and not to think, that our accomplishments are our power and the strength of our hand. Free choice is no more than the expression of our will to participate, as it were, in the Divine plan.

The shape of the letter is two lines forming a right angle, with a corner point. Representing a man bent over.

The vertical line: represents selflessness and willingness to sacrifice one’s life for one’s people.

The horizontal line: submergence of the soul in its Divine Source.

Daleth also represents a doorway. The door stands in the opening of the house, the beit.

In other words, when the letter is placed in a word, you have to keep in mind that not only is it the letter ‘D’, it has the numerical value of 4 and symbolizes a door.

A door, the door is twofold: it opens two directions: in or out.

Doors keep things and people in or out for security and safety.

A door is a portal, a threshold, when we cross it we enter into a new area in the natural realm and a new dimension, another time and another place in the spiritual realm.

 

In the days spoken of in scripture, when an important person came to a home, an animal was sacrificed at the threshold of the door.

The threshold was considered sacred.

You were to step over it and never on it.

This may be one reason the blood was placed only on the lintel and posts in the Israelites homes at the first Passover because they were not to tread on it and we are not to trample the blood under our feet either. Hebrews 10:26-31

Today when you come to the threshold of a country they give the dignitaries the ‘red carpet’ treatment. The practice is rooted in this
 offering of the animal at the threshold of the doorway.

This is also seen after a wedding where the Groom traditionally carries the bride over the threshold entering into a new life together the same as we do when we are born again and enter new life.

 

The door to God’s house allows for the humble of Ruwach/spirit to enter. The door itself, the dalet, is the property of humility and lowliness, and bitul, the entrance WAY to TRUTH. The dalet is also the initial letter of the word dirah, “dwelling place,” as in the phrase “[God’s] dwelling place below.” Thus the full meaning of the dalet is the door through which the humble enter into the realization of God’s dwelling place below.

We begin to understand more reasons why He said I AM the DOOR. If anyone enters in by Me, he shall be saved, and shall go in and go out, and shall find pasture.

I AM the Good Shepherd.

In Him we see the Fathers’ name, and expression

The Nail (Yud) upon the Door of the tent (Hei) of Jesus/Yeshua, opens the veil/way /door/entry (Dalet) to YaHuWaH (Hei) Kingdom

And taking the last three letters we see The door is open before YHWH (YaHuWaH)’s Righteous house.

The Holy/Kadosh Yahrushalom, is the place where the Tent/House/Beit of our Father is (above), where Jesus/Yeshua placed His blood upon the door, as in the blood of the Passover lamb on the door.

The DOOR of the sheep

The sheepfold to which He was referring, looks like this..

The shepherd was literally the door blocking the entrance stopping any predators or anything else coming in so the sheep were safe.

Any predator would have to go through the shepherd first.

He also stopped the sheep wandering out unprotected.

So even if he slept, if the sheep tried to climb over him, he would wake up.

Shepherds tend God’s flock because they love those who God loves; they mirror His heart in regards to His people – the singular motivation for the shepherds is their love for sheep, just as God loves them.

Hireling’s have an altogether different motivation – they tend God’s flock for the money, for the prestige and sense of power, being in the lime light, to be esteemed by others – and just as EZEKIEL 34 declares, these hirelings – or false shepherds, will actually take advantage of God’s sheep, or even abuse them.

When danger comes, the hireling will abandon God’s sheep, whereas the shepherd will lay down his very life for his sheep!

1 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber.

2 But he that entereth in by the door is the shepherd of the sheep.

Another characteristic of sheep: they follow after their shepherd that goes before them and leads them at the head of the flock. Goats are very different: they are not led by their shepherds at the head of the flock; rather Goat herders drive their goats from behind. This difference is significant in a special way: you see, sheep are led, but goats are driven.

JOHN 10:1-2

Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that enters not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbs up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber.  2 But he that enters in by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. 

When He said that only a thief and a robber would try to climb over and not come in through the gate, there are 2 people identified here: the ‘robber/thief’ and the shepherd. They are marked by the way that they go in order to gain access to the sheep.

The shepherd goes by the door, which is the legitimate “WAY” to the sheepfold; the robber/thief goes by “some other way”. 

They must climb over a wall, and by so doing, they are exalting themselves. A true under-shepherd of Messiah Jesus Christ never exalts himself, but only Jesus/Yeshua – and Him alone (Luke 18:14)!

Any true shepherd will enter in among God’s sheep by THE WAY, just as our Chief Shepherd (as written in the Scripture, 1 Pet 5:4) is Himself – the Way.

False shepherds – who are in fact robbers and thieves, taking possession of that which does not belong to them, neither by purchase – (Jesus/Yeshua purchased us, His sheep, by His blood; Acts. 20:28) – nor by stewardship – (those that God has accounted as acceptable as His ‘under-shepherds’ 2 Cor. 3:1-6).

Both Acts and 2Peter warn us that there are those who are self-appointed authorities in today’s world, who claim to speak for God in the church, but are actually enemies of the cross (Phil. 3:18-19) and have risen up in our midst to draw others away from the Good Shepherd and into error and apostasy (Acts. 20:29-31; 2 Pet. 2:1).

Sheepfolds can still be seen today in parts of UK/Europe.

There was only ONE tree of Life in the Garden of Eden.

There was only ONE door in Noah’s ark; any who would seek salvation from the coming flood would have to enter in there – there was no second door. 

There was only ONE way that led into the Temple’s Holy Place and the inner chamber the Holy of Holies – there wasn’t a multiple choice!

Likewise, there is just ONE door, ONE way to salvation – and that is Messiah; and The WAY to God’s sheep is by the DOOR.

There are many examples of Doors in the scriptures. One is Revelation 4:1 – …I looked, and behold, a door standing open in heaven.

“In the Spirit,” John goes through the open door into Heaven and in Rev.3:8, Philadelphia was given an “open door” to spread the Gospel unhindered.

The “open door” in Heaven is different. This open door is the physical entrance to the Kingdom of God, which today is still in Heaven. It will be open to those that had already spiritually entered the door to Heaven upon salvation and closed to those not saved:

Luke 13:23-28 Then one said to Him, “Lord, are there few who are saved?” And He said to them, “Strive to enter through the narrow gate, for many, I say to you, will seek to enter and will not be able. When once the Master of the house has risen up and shut the door, and you begin to stand outside and knock at the door, saying, ‘Lord, Lord, open for us,’ and He will answer and say to you, ‘I do not know you, where you are from,’ then you will begin to say, ‘We ate and drank in Your presence, and You taught in our streets.’ But He will say, ‘I tell you I do not know you, where you are from. Depart from Me, all you workers of iniquity.’ There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when you see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, and yourselves thrust out.

It is only through Jesus that we (the “sheep”) can enter the Kingdom (the pasture):

John 10:1 “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who does not enter through the door into the sheepfold, but climbs up by another way, that one is a thief and a robber. 2 “But he who enters through the door is the shepherd of the sheep. 3 “The doorkeeper opens for him, and the sheep hear his voice. And he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 4 “And when he has brought out his own sheep, he goes before them. And the sheep follow him, because they know his voice. 5 “And they shall by no means follow a stranger, but shall flee from him, because they do not know the voice of strangers.” 6 יהושע used this figure of speech, but they did not know what He had been saying to them. 7 יהושע therefore said to them again, “Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. 8 “All who came before Me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not hear them. 9 “I am the door. Whoever enters through Me, he shall be saved, and shall go in and shall go out and find pasture.

10 “The thief does not come except to steal, and to slaughter, and to destroy. I have come that they might possess life, and that they might possess it beyond measure. 11 “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep. 12 “But the hireling, and not being a shepherd, one who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees. And the wolf snatches the sheep and scatters them. 13 “Now the hireling flees because he is a hireling and is not concerned about the sheep. 14 “I am the good shepherd.1 And I know Mine, and Mine know Me, Footnote: 1Ezek. 34:11-12, Heb. 13:20, 1 Peter 2:25, 1 Peter 5:4. 15 even as the Father knows Me, and I know the Father. And I lay down My life for the sheep. 16 “And other sheep I have which are not of this fold – I have to bring them as well, and they shall hear My voice, and there shall be one flock, one shepherd. 

1Ezek. 34:23, Ezek. 37:24. 17 “Because of this the Father loves Me, because I lay down My life, in order to receive it again.Joh 10:18 “No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to receive it again. This command I have received from My Father.”

There is an interesting point in

Exodus 21:6 then his master shall bring him before Elohim, and shall bring him to the door, or to the doorpost, and his master shall pierce his ear with an awl. And he shall serve him forever.

As we have read in John, Jesus/Yeshua is the DOOR.

It is not insignificant that the town of Silwan the area where Jesus/Yeshua was nailed to the tree means pillar or post as in a door.

When we are nailed to the door we are in fact committing ourselves for ever to Jesus/Yeshua.

Remember the fact that Jesus/Yeshua was sacrificed at the door or the same side as the entrance to the east side of the Temple as was the Passover Lamb. It
 was His blood that was shed at the door to Father’s house. Even the two door posts were made from Olive trees also known as the two witnesses.

In Eze 46:1 ‘Thus said the Master יהוה, “The gate of the inner courtyard facing east is shut the six days of work, but on the Sabbath it is opened, and on the day of the New Moon it is opened. 2 “And the prince shall enter by way of the porch of that gate from the outside, and he shall stand by the post. And the priests shall prepare his burnt offering and his peace offerings. And he shall bow himself at the threshold of the gate, and shall go out, but the gate is not shut until evening. 3 “And the people of the land shall also bow themselves at the entrance to this gate before יהוה, on the Sabbaths and on the New Moons. 4 “And the burnt offering which the prince brings to יהוה on the Sabbath day is six lambs, perfect ones, and a ram, a perfect one. 5 “And the grain offering is one ĕphah for a ram, and the grain offering for the lambs, a gift of his hand, and a hin of oil for an ĕphah. 6 “And on the day of the New Moon: a young bull, a perfect one, six lambs, and a ram, they should be perfect.

This is all symbolic of the 7th Millennium when the door will be open and not shut. It is shut for the other six days of work.

Jesus/Yeshua is to be King during this 7th Millennium and He is the DOOR by which we must enter and cross over the THRESHOLD. It is His blood that has made the CARPET RED for our coming.

We read of the same in the Prodigal son in Luke 15:23 ‘And bring the fattened calf here and slaughter it, and let us eat and rejoice,

When this calf is killed it is done at the threshold of the door. The son is being given the red carpet treatment. The older brother never got this treatment because he was already in the house with the father.

I Am the Door

The Greek words translated “I am” occur exactly 37 times in the NT (in referring to the LORD).

No doubt the most famous statement ever uttered in all of history begins with an unusual four-letter word: Anochi. The Ten Commandments. 

Fire and smoke poured from the mountain and the earth shook. The entire Community of Israel stood together in awe at the foot of Sinai as the Divine Presence thrust them into profound revelation. The thunder of awakening surged through each heart and mind as a transcendent voice spoke out: Anochi Ha-Shem Elokecha.

The literal translation of this thunder is “I am The Name, your God.” Whereas the people of Israel received this realization in an explosive flash, we can receive this truth gradually by examining and thinking on the mystical meanings contained in these three words:

Anochi is the Divine ‘I’ — a description of the Divine Self.

Hashem – as in “The Name” refers to God’s attribute of Infinity, that is ‘beyond’ and transcendent.

Elokecha, (also called Elokim,) is a plural term, referring to the Divinity that interfaces with the finite world of multiplicity: meaning, “your personal God.”

Anochi is a synonym for etzem or atzmus, meaning “Essence”—the ultimate context and totality of Reality. Essence is no-thing and every-thing, and yet it is neither nothing nor everything.

The “I” of Anochi is not only the I of existence, manifestation or form, it is also

the “I” of thing, and

the “I” of no-thing,

the “I” of finite and

the “I” of infinite,

the “I” of fullness and

the “I” of emptiness.

As the Israelites received the revelation of Anochi, they experienced their own limited human existence and at the same time, the unlimited Divine Existence in the absence of conflict.

In this revelation, there was no duality, only Unity. Nothing exists outside of Essence, thus Essence cannot be “experienced” ― our own self-consciousness distances our minds and ourselves from the experience.

Although Essence is beyond the finite and the infinite, it also embraces and constitutes both of them. For this reason, Essence probably holds the key to resolving the connection between the finite and the infinite, the natural and the spiritual.

We cannot become that which we already are so the process may be simply a matter of revelation. Again we need a personal apocalypse which comes from communication and developing relationship with the Father who is spirit; and this could be a meaning behind Jesus words in John 4:24, God is a Spirit and those that worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth.

Because God is a Spirit, He longs to have fellowship/communion with our spirits where He can reveal answers to these questions. We need to meet Him Spirit-to-spirit. We should approach Him humbly, transparently, and honestly, withholding nothing. Also recognizing who He is, and realizing who we are in His presence. We need to not be reticent but rather fully embrace the spiritual side of our beliefs. We walk so easily in the carnal physical realm and miss so much that He is trying to impart to our spiritually hungry hearts.

The word means ‘I,’ referring to God – I the Lord Your God took you out of Egypt… But ‘ani’ is the common Hebrew pronoun for ‘I.’

Explained in the Talmud (Shabbat 105a), that Anochi is an acronym for Ana Nafshi Ketovit Yehovit. Simply translated: I Myself wrote [these words and] gave [them to you].

But on closer inspection the actual translation is far more intriguing: I wrote down My very Soul and gave it to you.

Or more poetically: My Soul is inscribed in these words that I gave you.

Anochi captures the essence and purpose of all existence: To inscribe and reveal the soul in our every word and in our every experience.

The opening of the Ten Commandments, Anochi, defines the essence of life’s purpose, of all our interactions and of all our words – to manifest the unifying soul in our fragmented universe.

Had God not inscribed His soul into the words, our relationship with the Divine would have probably remained detached.

John 14:6 I am the way, the truth, and the life: 

no man comes to the Father, but by me unless the Father draws him. (John 6:65)

It seems very restrictive, however, so is the narrow WAY and the natural man has no ability to come to God, nor does he even have the desire to come. Because his heart is hard and his mind is darkened, the unregenerate person doesn’t desire God and according to Romans 5:10 is actually an enemy of God.

The days of shepherds in Jesus/Yeshua’s time were simple and when He said I AM the Door they understood the concept perfectly. We have doors of wood glass metal etc., and many places have people on duty by those doors. Their job it is to guard the entrance but that individual is not expected to take the place of the door, merely to enforce the boundaries that it represents.

Today the door is still open. Seek him now, while He may be found. There will come a day when there will be no such option… just as happened to those in Noah’s day…and God closed the door. This is also reflected in the Fall Feast, Yom Teruah/Trumpets where the end of the ceremony is called Neilah means closing the gates.

Enter through the narrow WAY into the joy of the lord. Joy is the fullness of the relationship we have been developing and that is the key and secret of the believer’s strength.

The Anochi, the I AM, Shepherd of the flock, is the Dalet, the Door, as we wait on the threshold to enter into our heavenly future; just as He was the Dalet, when we came into His sheepfold crossing the threshold of New Birth. He and the Father are One/Echad and we are indeed on the threshold of a divine portal.

 Chest, Box, Ark In the Scriptures, the ark was originally a golden chest designed to reside in the innermost chamber of the mishkan (tabernacle) and then later in the bet hamikdash (temple).

Another word for ark is tebah/tevah תֵּבָה pronounced (tey-vaht); a noun, feminine word and is the “her” of this word. מִבַּיִת ( mee-bah-yit )

The base word is בית (bah-yit) meaning a house but in the context of this verse about Noah it means ‘inside’.

The literal meaning of the Hebrew word teivah is container or box and it is used for two objects Tevat Noa’h – Noah’s Ark.. (Noah’s Ark is tevat gofer; literally a box of gopher wood) ..and Moses Papyrus basket.

The meaning – literally – the container/the box of life!

Teivah also means word. Words are containers: they package ideas, feelings, sentiments and convictions.

Thus a student of the Torah is prompted to’ go into the word,’ the sacred task of discovering hidden meanings enfolded into each tevah!

This is about 2 boxes – 2 arks – one arc was in Bethany,

the town near Jerusalem at the foot of the Mount of Olives where Yeshua/Jesus stayed.

What about the Anointing of Yeshua/Jesus by Miriam and an unnamed woman?

The episode is particularly confusing because there are four different accounts with varied details in each of the four gospels. So It takes some detective work to analyze the information about the various Miriams/Marys mentioned in the gospels.

In the events of what we call ‘Holy Week’, there are two different recorded occasions when a woman anoints either the feet or the head of Yeshua/Jesus.

Many scholars combine both events because of their similarities; however, by studying them as two separate events, we can learn of some notable symbolism.

The amazing thing about this account presented during Yeshua/Jesus’ final week, was that Mary was symbolically doing the same thing that Yeshua/Jesus would later do for all of mankind on the cross.

Mark and

And while he was at Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as he was reclining at table, a woman came with an alabaster flask of ointment of pure nard, very costly, and she broke the flask and poured it over his head. There were some who said to themselves indignantly, “Why was the ointment wasted like that? For this ointment could have been sold for more than three hundred denarii and given to the poor.” And they scolded her. But Jesus said, “Leave her alone. Why do you trouble her? She has done a beautiful thing to me. For you always have the poor with you, and whenever you want, you can do good for them. But you will not always have me. … Mark 14:3-9

Matthew both mention an unnamed woman who anoints Yeshua/Jesus’ head with either nard or ointment.

Matt 26:6-13

Now when Jesus was at Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, a woman came up to him with an alabaster flask of very expensive ointment, and she poured it on his head as he reclined at table. And when the disciples saw it, they were indignant, saying, “Why this waste? For this could have been sold for a large sum and given to the poor.” But Jesus, aware of this, said to them, “Why do you trouble the woman? For she has done a beautiful thing to me. …

Luke tells us of an unnamed woman

“who was a sinner”

who bathed Yeshua/Jesus’ feet with her tears,

anointed them with ointment,

and dried them with her hair.

One of the Pharisees asked him to eat with him, and he went into the Pharisee’s house and took his place at the table. And behold, a woman of the city, who was a sinner, when she learned that he was reclining at table in the Pharisee’s house, brought an alabaster flask of ointment, and standing behind him at his feet, weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears and wiped them with the hair of her head and kissed his feet and anointed them with the ointment. Now when the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet, he would have known who and what sort of woman this is who is touching him, for she is a sinner.” And Jesus answering said to him, “Simon, I have something to say to you.” And he answered, “Say it, Teacher.” …

Luke 7:36-50

Then, to add even more confusion,

John describes Mary of Bethany,

aka Martha’s sister, anointing his feet with nard and wiping them with her hair. Only in John’s gospel is the woman named as Mary of Bethany.

To understand the significance of these anointings, we first must understand that the word

Messiah in Hebrew, and

Christ in Greek both mean

‘the anointed one.’

In other words, Jesus Christ would actually mean Jesus the anointed. Yeshua Ha Mashiach.

In the Old Testament, there were three groups of people referred to as being anointed, that of prophets, priests, and kings.

The first anointing, as recorded by John…

Six days before the Passover, Jesus therefore came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. So they gave a dinner for him there. Martha served, and Lazarus was one of those reclining with him at table. Mary therefore took a pound of expensive ointment made from pure nard, and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (he who was about to betray him), said, “Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?”

John 12:1-8

…took place on Saturday, six days before the Passover, in an unnamed home in Bethany by Mary, the sister to Martha and Lazarus wherein she anointed only the feet of Jesus.

Following the chronology of John and placing the anointing on Saturday, it may be that John was trying to foreshadow how Yeshua/Jesus, being anointed the day before the triumphal entry, was symbolically being anointed as the king of Israel. We should remember that one of the reasons it was so significant that Yeshua/Jesus rode in to Jerusalem on a donkey was because when Solomon was recognized as the king of Israel, he likewise rode into Jerusalem on a donkey (see 1 Kings 1:32-34.)

The second anointing, as recorded by Matthew 26:6-13

6 Now when Jesus was at Bethany in the house of Simon the leper,7 a woman came up to him with an alabaster flask of very expensive ointment, and she poured it on his head as he reclined at table. 8 And when the disciples saw it, they were indignant, saying, “Why this waste? 9 For this could have been sold for a large sum and given to the poor.” 10 But Jesus, aware of this, said to them, “Why do you trouble the woman? For she has done a beautiful thing to me. 11 For you always have the poor with you, but you will not always have me. 12 In pouring this ointment on my body, she has done it to prepare me for burial. 13 Truly, I say to you, wherever this gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will also be told in memory of her.”

and also by Mark 14:3-9

And while he was at Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as he was reclining at table, a woman came with an alabaster flask of ointment of pure nard, very costly, and she broke the flask and poured it over his head.

This instance apparently took place on Wednesday of that Week, two days before Passover,

in the home of Simon the leper in Bethany, (2 miles east of Jerusalem),

by an unnamed woman who anointed only the head of Yeshua/Jesus.

Simon the Leper in Bethany: We know almost nothing about this man, but evidently he had suffered from leprosy, and Yeshua/Jesus had healed him or no one -would have been permitted in his house.  Some scholars  say the word meant pot-maker rather than leprosy.

 

Mark doesn’t mention the name of the woman, but John identifies her as Mary of Bethany, the sister of Martha and Lazarus, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. John says that Martha was serving at this gathering and that Lazarus was sitting with Yeshua/Jesus.

If we follow the chronology of Mark and Matthew and place the anointing by the unnamed woman on Wednesday, the day before his Last Supper, it may be that Mark and Matthew were trying to show that Yeshua/Jesus was being anointed as the great High Priest, who would intercede on our behalf as He entered the garden of Gethsemane?

The high priest wore a breastplate with 12 stones, and two shoulder stones engraved with the names of the 12 tribes of Israel representing that Israel was always to be near his heart, and that he was to carry the burdens of Israel upon his shoulders at all times (see Ex.28:29 & 28:12).

What a perfect description of Messiah because in Gethsemane He took our sins and sorrows upon Himself.

Some believe in this one of the 2 incidents, that this perfume which Mary of Bethany, brought in her alabaster box may have been her dowry.

If that is true, it was probably all that she really possessed.

What is an alabaster box?

The Bible speaks of an alabaster box in the two incidents involving women, one of whom was Mary of Bethany, who brought ointment in the box to anoint Jesus. The Greek word translated “alabaster box” in the KJV, as well as “flask,” “jar” and “vial” in other translations, is alabastron, which can also mean “perfume vase.”

Alabaster historically was a symbol of

purity and great honor.

It is also thought to have been associated with the Egyptian Goddess Bast (hence alaBASTer).

Alabaster boxes were originally Egyptian vessels made of a peculiar stone, a kind of soft white marble, it is a translucent carbonate of lime formed on the floors of limestone caves by the percolation of water. It is of the same material as our marbles, but differently formed.

It is usually clouded or banded like agate, hence sometimes called onyx marble which was supposed to be specially adapted to preserve the odor of perfumed ointments. The Greeks named the vessels from the town of Alabastron the place in Egypt where it is found. It occurs only in (Matt. 26:7; Mark 14:3; Luke 7:37).

The ancients considered alabaster to be the best material in which to preserve their ointments.

This white mineral was easy to carve and polish, so Israelites used it to make beautiful jars, vases and very easily wrought into boxes.

The alabastra were of various shapes and sizes bored with a drill by the Egyptians and hollowed out with a chisel by the Palestinians. Ancient traders often sealed costly perfume in an alabaster jar, allowing the scent to escape only gradually through the jar’s porous shell over many years.

The fragrance of some ointments is said to have remained in the alabastra for hundreds of years.

At the time Yeshua/Jesus was on earth there was a custom among the Israelite women.

When a woman reached the age of availability for marriage the family would purchase an alabaster box for her and fill it with precious ointment. The size of the box and the value of the ointment would parallel her families wealth.

This alabaster box would be part of her dowry.

When a suitor came to ask for her in marriage she would respond by taking the alabaster box and break it at his feet.

This gesture of anointing his feet showed him honor.

We must take our alabaster box to Jesus/Yeshuas feet

and

break it in His presence

for He is worthy of such honor

and as our bridegroom

we show Him we are indeed the bride

for whom He paid the ultimate price.

The woman had an alabaster jar filled with very expensive perfume, made of pure nard.

Mark 14:5 says that this box of ointment contained a pound/ = approx. 0.45 Kg. /or 12 ounces of pure nard, was worth more than 300 denarii, equal to a year’s salary (300 pence, in Mark 14:5). A pence is considered to have been a day’s wages. It would be around 40.000 U.S.Dollars/30,500 GBP of today’s money. No wonder the disciples (Mt. 26:8), Judas in particular was the most vocal, responded with dismay at what they deemed such a waste.

They claim that Mary has wasted this precious perfume, and that she should have sold it and given the money to the poor instead.

Imagine how Mary must have felt, after pouring out everything she had as an act of worship, she gets criticized and ridiculed by the disciples of Yeshua/Jesus. Surely her heart must have been broken just like the alabaster box that had contained her perfume.

Nard (Spikenard) was most likely the content of the jar because alabaster itself was such a pricey item, not like a clay jar that stored more common items like olive oil.

Ointment, oils and perfumes used to be put in vessels made of alabaster, which kept them pure and unspoiled. Alabaster was a strong enough substance to keep the oil or perfume completely contained until the time of its use. allowing the scent to escape only gradually through the jar’s porous shell over many years.

The boxes were often sealed or made fast with wax, to prevent the perfume from escaping.

The woman “broke” the vessel; i.e.,

she broke off, as was usually done,

the long and narrow neck so as to reach the contents.

When Mary broke open her alabaster box,

“the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume” John 12:3

Quite suddenly, Mary moved towards the Lord. She was holding in her hands a beautiful alabaster box which contained very precious delicately perfumed ointment, and to the surprise of everyone there, she broke the box and poured its contents over the head (Mark 14:3) and the feet (John 12:3) of our Lord and anointed Him.

When Mary of Bethany broke her alabaster box/jar of spikenard John 12:3 and bathed the feet of Jesus with the oil, she, too, wanted only the best to define her love for Him.

It has been speculated that this jar may have been Mary’s dowry or her inheritance. In other words, this jar of spikenard ointment may have been all she had of value, and she poured it out on Him.

Her extravagant gift is a picture of the kind of offering expected of each of us. Only the best was worthy of her Lord, and she was willing to give everything as an act of worship.

The same should be true of us (Num.18:29).

The fact that both women carried an alabaster box of ointment with which to anoint Jesus as He was eating a meal has given rise to a certain amount of confusion about these two separate incidents involving two different women. Matthew 26:6-13, Mark 14:3-9, and John 12:1-8 all speak of the same event involving Mary of Bethany, sister of Martha and Lazarus, at the home of Simon the leper, probably a leper who had been healed by Jesus and had become one of His followers.

This event occurred in Bethany just days before the crucifixion, which is why Mary came to anoint Jesus for the event to come. “She poured perfume on my body beforehand to prepare for my burial” Mark 14:8. Mary is never referred to as a sinner in any of the accounts of her. Nor does it say she was weeping.

On the other hand, Luke 7:36-50 speaks of the house of Simon the Pharisee rather than the house of Simon the leper. This event occurred about a year before the crucifixion in the area around Galilee Luke 7:1,11.

Is this a third event?

Luke 7:37 When a sinful woman from that town learned that Jesus was dining there, she brought an alabaster jar of perfume.

Luke 7:39 When the Pharisee who had invited Jesus saw this, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet, He would know who this is and what kind of woman is touching Him–for she is a sinner!”

Luke 7:38 And stood at his feet behind him weeping, and began to wash his feet with tears, and did wipe them with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment.

The woman here was forgiven of many sins, but her name is not given.

While Mary of Bethany may have possessed insight as to the upcoming death of Christ, the woman of Luke had no such insight; she exhibited just loving worship of the One who forgave her of her sins and her many tears were witness to her repentant heart knowing from what she had been forgiven and redeemed.

Standing behind at His feet weeping.

She came to our Lord, as He reclined at table; standing by Him, leaning over His feet, her tears of penitence began to flow, and thus she began to wet His feet with her tears.

And stood at His feet behind Him

…Messiah lay upon a bed, or couch, as was the custom of the ancients, both Jews and others, at meals, with His feet extended out behind; and between the couches and the walls of the room, there was a space for servants to wait and serve, and such are therefore said to

“stand at the feet”;

and the phrase is used, as descriptive of servants in waiting;

in such a situation this woman put herself, as being also ashamed and afraid to come before Him, and look Him in the face; and here she stood weeping for her sins, and melted down with the love of Yeshua/Jesus to her soul, and at His discourse:

and began to wash his feet with tearswhich fell from her eyes in such abundance upon his feet, as she stood by Him that they were like a shower of rain, as the word signifies, with which His feet were as it were bathed and washed; His shoes or sandals being off, as was the custom at eating so to do, lest they should daub the couch or bed, on which they lay.  

Her tears she used instead of water; for it was the custom first to wash the feet before they were anointed with oil, which she intended to do; and for which purpose she had brought with her an alabaster box of ointment:

it is said of one, and did wipe them with the hairs of her headwhich were long, and hung loose about her shoulders, (here it says), it being usual and comely for women to wear long hair? (1Cor. 11:15). That which was her adornment and beauty, and which she took great care of to nourish and put in proper form, to, render her desirable, she uses instead of a towel to wipe her tears off her Lord’s feet.

This was not an unusual practice with the Jews; 

and anointed them with the ointment;
which she brought with her.

This same custom was also used by the Greeks and Romans among their civilities, and in their salutations.

THE PRECIOUS OINTMENT

The ointment mentioned in the text by Mark is called 

ointment of spikenard,

probably because that costly aromatic plant was one of the principal ingredients.

Spikenard is one of the most precious spices of the Bible.

The Hebrew for it is NERD;

the Greeks called it nardos.

It grew extensively in northern India, and has been found high in the Himalaya Mountains.

It grows small with many, spikes on one root, bearing pink blossoms; thus it is sometimes called the Indian spike. Perfumed oil is extracted from these spikes..

Taken from the root of the Species Nardostachys jatamansi From the botanical family Valerianaceae. The plant grows to about 1 meter (3 ft) in height and has pink, bell-shaped flowers.

The word spikenard is found in the King James Version; other translations simply say “pure nard.”

Spikenard had a strong, distinctive aroma, similar to an essential oil, that clings to skin and hair and continues to give off its heady perfume.

It was also thought to have medicinal properties.

Spikenard had a unique fragrance, and

the presence of its aroma was an indication that

the very best had been offered.

One of the early aromatics mentioned in the bible In the Song of Solomon 1:12, 4:13-14, spikenard is mentioned in reference to the love between bride and groom. In song of sol 1:12 the bride says, “While the king was at his table, my perfume spread its fragrance.”

Those words imply that, despite all other fragrances in the room, only his bride’s would matter to the groom.

The presence of spikenard represented their passion for each other and their desire to have only the best define their love.

THIS IS

THE NERD IN THE ARK

and it was very precious!

The receptacles for this expensive perfume have been found by archaeologists under the debris of walls, among the ruins of patrician houses, and in royal palaces.

Both women used ointments valuing 300 or more pence, both took place during a dinner; and both women were criticized by a disciple for their acts of service towards Yeshua/Jesus.

If a person bought an alabaster box, it was only used for very important purposes. So the Pharisees considered it a waste when a woman poured perfume from an alabaster box on Messiah’s head in Matthew 26:7-9.

Now when Jesus was at Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, a woman came up to him with an alabaster flask of very expensive ointment, and she poured it on his head as he reclined at table. And when the disciples saw it, they were indignant, saying, “Why this waste? For this could have been sold for a large sum and given to the poor.” But Jesus, aware of this, said to them, “Why do you trouble the woman? For she has done a beautiful thing to me. …

Just imagine the look on the disciples’ faces? Their mouths open in shock as they watched a crazy scene unfold. A woman, unreservedly, empty over a years wages, (tens of thousands of dollars today,) all over Him for apparently no reason.

In their minds she should have given that to the poor and they complained that she was wasting a precious scent which could have been enjoyed for years.

No doubt they were waiting to take delight in Him rebuking the woman, which did not happen. 

Yeshua/Jesus puts a stop to their criticism. He tells the disciples to leave her alone, because she has done a good work for Him. He says that they can help the poor anytime they want, but that they will not have very many more opportunities to show their love for Him in person.

He had told His disciples on several occasions that He was going to Jerusalem to be put to death, and now He claims that Mary’s act of devotion will serve as the anointing for His death. Although Mary probably didn’t intend for her actions to be interpreted this way, the custom was to first bathe and then anoint the body of a dead person.

After the body was anointed, the flask that contained the ointment was to be broken and laid with the body in the tomb.

Yeshua/Jesus knew that He would be put to death as a criminal, and that He would be buried without the proper anointing.

When Judas rebuked Mary for wasting such a precious ointment John 12:4-5, Jesus silenced him: “Leave her alone. . . . It was intended that she should save this perfume for the day of my burial”John 12:7.

Only He truly understood what He was saying; knowing that in a few days He would be arrested, tried, and crucified.

Could it have been that, as He felt the whip lacerate His flesh, as He felt the nails pierce His hands and feet, He could also inhale the fragrance of that gift of spikenard and remember why He was doing this?

Mary’s gift may have strengthened and encouraged Him, even throughout His horrific ordeal, as its strong scent still clung to His skin.

Mary had not known it at the time she offered her valuable gift, but she was the first to anoint the Son of God as He became no longer simply their teacher but the ultimate sacrifice for the sins of the world. (John 1:29; 2 Cor. 5:12).

Yeshua/Jesus rebuked the disciples, praised the woman, and the house where they were was filled with the fragrance of the precious ointment (John 12.3)

We are the vessels now sealed by Holy Spirit/Ruach HaKodesh. and in our brokenness we release a sweet smelling fragrance to those being saved and the fragrance is also filling our house, our bodies/being. 

Each of us is specially made to be a vessel of honor. We are all different shapes and sizes, all precious in His sight, we are to give forth the fragrance of Messiah from our lives.

Sometimes that fragrance just escapes gradually; other times, it comes gushing forth!

The woman who brought her alabaster jar of perfume had to crack it as an act of worship in order to spill out its contents.

The only way the perfume can been released to anoint Messiah is if the jar is broken.

FRAGRANCE COMES THROUGH BROKENNESS

The perfume is a symbol of the spirit or the inner man.

The alabaster jar is a symbol of the outer man or the soul.

As David The Psalmist says, The Lord is near unto them that are of a broken heart; and saves those of a contrite spirit (Psa. 34:18).

How vitally necessary it is that we are truly sorry for our sin, a sorrow that works repentance and turns us totally around.

It causes us to stop doing the things that grieve Jesus and begin to live in a way that pleases Him.

Such was the contrite spirit of the woman–

John calls her Mary–

who broke the alabaster box of precious ointment on Yeshua/Jesus.

When she was broken because of her sin;

Yeshua/ Jesus forgave her,

and she experienced a gratitude

deeper than words could express.

Being a young woman in the presence of so many men, she was not allowed to vocally express herself. Such a privilege was not permitted women of that day, so she did all that she could.

She acted by arising and going after the most precious gift she could think of–a very costly bottle of perfume.

She wanted to show Him her love, but how?

By giving.

She gave it to Him in a way that He would know that at least one person truly loved Him and believed Him to be the Messiah.

When Mary (Magdalene)? washed the feet of Jesus with her tears and dried them with her hair, she also anointed them with expensive ointment. For this token of devotion, Christ forgave her sins then proceeded to remind his host that he had not been extended the same courtesy as would be appropriate to a welcome guest.

 Foot bathing signified the status of an honored guest and put them at ease and comfort.

Foot washing, when undertaken by anyone other than the lowest servant in the household, took on significant symbolic importance.

Most authorities recognize this humble action as deliberate act of humility, a mark of respect or deliberate self-humiliation.

FRAGRANCE COMES THROUGH SACRIFICE

Mary worshipped the one who had set her free by giving herself and all that she had. The Apostle Paul wrote: I beg you … by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God …(Rom.12:1).

A sacrifice is a gift of something precious, meaningful, and the best. In the Old Testament, God’s people gave the first and the best from among their flock as an offering to God. When the Lord smelled Noah’s offerings, they were a scent of satisfaction to His heart, and caused Him to have mercy on His people (Gen. 8:21).

The same thing happened when Yeshua/Jesus smelled the sacrifice that Mary gave Him that memorable day.

His heart was turned toward her.

He not only accepted her sacrifice, but her act of giving became a learning point to all those who looked on.

After Mary broke the box of precious ointment, she poured the perfume over Jesus’ head (say Matthew, Mark, and Luke) and feet (says John), and the house was filled with the odor of the ointment.

“The anointing which you have received of Him abides (lives) in you” (I John 2:17). Therefore, “out of your innermost being springs and rivers of living water shall flow continuously”(John 7:38).

We are His vessels and contain His fragrance which will bubble up like fresh spring water and overflow into the lives of others.

This pouring forth brings the anointed message of Yeshua/Jesus to all those it touches. It is His fragrance, His anointing, His oil, His precious ointment that will fill the place. He said,

The spirit of the Lord is now upon me because He has anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, to preach the acceptable year of the Lord (Luke 4:18-19).

Now if the same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, what do you do? Jesus answers this question:

“Verily, I say unto you … the works that I do shall you do also, and greater works than these shall you do…” (John 14:12).

Of Mary who poured the precious ointment on Him, He said,

“Wherever this gospel shall be preached in the whole world, there shall also this, that this woman has done, be told for a memorial of her” (Matt.26.13).

FRAGRANCE COMES THROUGH LOVING

Mary knew that the anointing came from being

at His’ feet–in His Presence.

She wasn’t moved by the critics around her but continued to pour the precious ointment on Him. Yeshua/Jesus rebuked her critics and made her famous throughout the centuries right into our lives today.

Our love for Messiah, like Mary’s, is a commitment that is not swayed by what other people say or think.

It is the deep expression of gratitude that comes from a heart that has experienced His forgiveness. The fragrance of such gratitude is a sweet smelling savor in the nostrils of our Lord.

Imagine the scene:

 She stumbled through the tears
That make her blind
 She felt such pain 
Some spoke in anger
 Heard folks whisper
There’s no place here for her kind

 Through the shame that flushed her face
 Until at last she knelt before his feet

Everything she said was heard
 As she poured her love for the master
 From her box of Alabaster

And I’ve come to pour
 My praise on Him like oil
 From Mary’s Alabaster Box

You did not feel what I felt
 When He wrapped His loving arms around me

Of the oil in my Alabaster box

Until the day when Jesus came to me

WHAT FRAGRANCE COMES THROUGH US?

Everyone gives off some kind of smell through our actions, our attitudes, and our words. Like it or not, we smell like the people in whose company we are. If they are smokers, then we and our clothes will smell like smoke. If we hug those who wear strong perfume or aftershave, the fragrance stays with us.

Whether we like it or not, we smell like the foods we eat.  Eating garlic, we will smell like garlic, likewise peanuts, we’ll smell like them. Attempting to cover up the odors usually makes it worse.

Whether we believe it or not, we will begin to speak like the people with whom we spend our time. Should they use slang words, we soon hear ourselves repeating them yet in a positive way, if they use praise words and scripture, we respond and echo them. It is important to know just what do others smell when they are near us?

We are not to hide behind a false aroma or use something to mask who we really are

we must be genuine,

be real with the Lord, with others and with ourselves. Nothing is hidden from Him anyway!

 

14 But thanks be to God, who always leads us triumphantly as captives in Christ and through us spreads everywhere the fragrance of the knowledge of Him. 15 For we are to God the sweet aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing. 16 To the one, we are an odor of death and demise; to the other, a fragrance that brings life. And who is qualified for such a task?…2Cor.2:14-16

We are a sweet smelling fragrance – when we are broken alabaster boxes.

Mary set aside pride and embarrassment in order to demonstrate her love and faith in Messiah. How far are we willing to go in order to show our love for Him?

When we fellowship with Yeshua/Jesus in worship, in prayer, and by reading His Word. Then in our brokenness, in our sacrifices, in our pouring out into the lives of others, and in our expression of love for Him, we’ll smell like Him, talk like Him, and spread His fragrance wherever we go.

There certainly are many similarities in these incidents that have caused some confusion, one of which is the presence of the nerd in an ark, an alabaster box, in both accounts.

When the Pharisee expresses disgust that such a woman, who, it is inferred, is a prostitute, or certainly a sinner, should be allowed to do such a thing, Messiah rebukes him and points out that since the woman has entered, he has done nothing but minister to him while the Pharisee, whose name is Simon, has done nothing.

Since the Israelites, like all other Oriental peoples, wore sandals instead of shoes, and as they usually went barefoot in the house, frequent washing of the feet was a necessity. Hence among the Israelites it was the first duty of the host to give his guest water for the washing of his feet (Gen. 18:4, 24:32; Judges 19:21);

to omit this was a sign of marked unfriendliness. It was also customary to wash the feet before meals and before going to bed; to abstain for a long time from washing them was a sign of deep mourning (2 Sam. 19:24). 

The other part of her action that may have raised eyebrows, was the wiping of his feet with her hair. Apparently, Jewish women did not let down their hair in public. This expression of devotion may have come across as quite improper and even too intimate an act in public, just as it would in most other cultures. 

He then turns to the woman and pardons her of all her sins for her great devotion.

A final thought…

Many think Mary Magdalene was a prostitute who came to the Lord.

Mary means ‘wise woman/lady’. It is a Greek form of the Hebrew Miriam or Mariamme, and was the most popular woman’s name at the time

Mary Magdalene (/ˈmæɡdələn/ Hebrew: ‫מרים המגדלית‎‎original Biblical Greek: Μαρία ἡ Μαγδαληνή),

Literally translated as Mary the Magdalene or Mary of Magdala. 
Mary came from a now-vanished town called Magdala, on the western side of the Sea of Galilee.

Pope Gregory the Great was the first to link her to the prostitute who wept at his feet. All we really know is that the scripture records that Mary Magdalene had demons and was delivered by Messiah. We don’t know whether she was a prostitute or sexually immoral.

But no one questions it. She’s become the world’s most famous prostitute.

Imagine that you come to the Lord and for generations you’re known as the world’s most famous prostitute which may not even be true!

However it doesn’t matter what people think of you. (Most of the time they’re wrong anyway.) It only matters what Messiah thinks of you and that you’re with Him now.

Since Pope Gregory the Great, this woman has been identified with Mary Magdelene and so she is often portrayed as carrying an alabaster jar. In fact she is referred to as Mary of Bethany in another Gospel. But then Gregory also identified Mary of Bethany with Mary Magdelene! More confusion!

Throughout the centuries, Mary Magdalene has been erroneously portrayed as a reformed prostitute: was she confused with the woman with the alabaster jar who was nameless described in Luke 7:36-50?

The woman with the alabaster jar is called a ‘sinner’, but she was not called a prostitute either; Luke uses a different word when he describes an actual prostitute in 15:30 .

Mary Magdalene had a serious illness, but the nature of the illness is unspecified; later celibate male writers linked Mary’s illness, her ‘demons’, with her sexuality. The seven demons were more likely to have been connected to her physical ailments.

What we are seeing is how, in fact, the Woman with the Jar is much closer in her spiritual attitude to Jesus… Further, the Alabaster Jar is linked to the image of the Ark.

It is the receiving vessel, into which the Holy Spirit pours and the individual can be transformed.

Here it is filled with ointment. The woman is not just washing Messiah but ANOINTING Him. And remember that the word Christ means ‘Anointed One’. So the Jar and the woman who carries it are VERY significant in terms of understanding the inner meaning of Messiah.

Mary Magdelene was a disciple of Jesus of Nazareth, and probably one who shared her substance financially! It is  unlikely, that she was a reformed prostitute, but medieval painters seemed to like to to show her as such.

She was the first witness to the Resurrection, and is called ‘Apostle to the Apostles’, since the risen Messiah told her to ‘go and tell’, apostellein in Greek.

The idea of women as primary witnesses does not seem unusual to people in the 21st century, but it was a revolutionary concept at the time. The testimony of women was not given the same weight as men’s, either personally or in a court of law. Mary’s witness to the Resurrection reversed this idea. When the Christian stories described Mary Magdalene and the other women as the first witnesses of the Resurrection, they were saying something important about the nature of women: that they were capable of being as fully Christian as men.

That said, none of the accounts suggest specifically by name any involvement by Mary Magdalene.

So, was there only one woman that anointed Jesus during Holy Week?

The gospels record there was an event of a woman anointing Messiah in a particularly extravagant way, it seems we will simply never know for sure who it was that enacted such a loving gesture for Jesus. Perhaps it was Mary, Martha’s sister, or perhaps it was done by another woman whose name has been lost to us forever.

What we do know is that Mary, and perhaps this unnamed woman, will always be remembered for the incredible service they gave to their Lord and Master. A service, that perhaps, pointed to the Savior’s most often used title, that of Christ/Messiah, the anointed one.

“I tell the truth, wherever the gospel is preached throughout the world, what she had done will also be told, in memory of her.” Matt. 26:8-13.

We are part of fulfilling that prophecy as we read these scriptures.

The scripture doesn’t tell us how long she had been holding on to her jar. We are not told what she was saving it for.

She could have hoarded it or saved it for a rainy day. She could have been selfish and kept it to herself.

None of her family objected when she gave everything she had quietly away to the one that she adored.

Mary loved Jesus so much that she wanted to give all that she had to Him.

Forgetting what people thought, how she would look or the practical needs she would forgo. Her sole desire was to give everything she had to Him and she did it cheerfully not knowing what her future would be. Her love and dedication to Messiah made her life truly fragrant.  

How do we become “fragrant for the Lord?”

When we do all that we do with the idea of presenting our very best to the Lord, we become fragrant.

What is Yeshua/Jesus worth to us? For Mary, He was worth everything that she possessed. For Judas He was worth 30 pieces of silver.

Mark includes this story here to contrast it with the story of Judas. Judas was so incensed after witnessing this act of incredible waste was it then that he conspired to betray Jesus for thirty pieces of silver? The tipping point?

Verses 1 and 2 tell us that the religious leaders were plotting to execute Jesus and were looking for a way to do it that wouldn’t cause the crowds to riot. Some believe that Mary’s act of devotion was the thing that caused Judas to decide to switch teams. John says that Judas was the most vocal of the disciples in criticizing Mary for what she had done, but it wasn’t because he was concerned for the poor, it was because he was the treasurer of the group and had taken some of their money for himself. Judas wanted to get his hands on that money. So when Jesus condemns the disciples for criticizing Mary, Judas decides to get his money another way…by betraying him. Verse 10 says that Judas went to the religious leaders and promised to hand over Jesus for a price.

As we read we can learn several things.

First of all, the alabaster box of ointment contained something that was very precious, it represented the life of the owner, TEVAH it was like a small house with the sum total of her future hopes inside it;

but as long as it stayed in the container, it didn’t benefit anyone.

When she released it did all the unspoken Teivah, words, ideas, feelings, sentiments and convictions, pour out also?

Yeshua/Jesus called the act a good work, and the original Greek actually means “a beautiful thing.”

God has given each one of us a spiritual gift. It may be great faith, acts of service, hospitality, teaching, or some other gift.

But if we keep that gift to ourself, it benefits no one.

It is our responsibility as a Christian to identify what our gift is, and then to use it for the glory of God and the benefit of those around us.

When Mary wiped Jesus’ feet with her hair, she walked away smelling like Jesus did!! When we have been close to Him we will smell like Him too!

When we use what we have for Jesus, others can sense that we have been with Him. If your gift is compassion or mercy, you display the same that Jesus showed to us when He died in our place. If our gift is evangelism, then we display the love that Jesus has for sinners.

The use of our spiritual gifts causes others to sense Yeshua/Jesus’ presence in our lives.

Mary couldn’t keep the Jewish leaders from falsely accusing Him. She couldn’t keep the soldiers from crucifying Him, or the crowds from mocking Him.

But she could show her love and devotion by sacrificing the most precious thing that she possessed.

When Messiah is the object of our affections, those who have received His pardoning love

will not stop to calculate the value

of the alabaster box of precious ointment.

We only have one life, so lets make them ones that are poured out for His glory; we are broken only to be made whole again, just as Messiah Yeshua was broken for us.

Who Are Those Around The Throne?

‘There are more things in heaven and Earth, …. Than are dreamt of in your philosophy..’

Please bear with the non-biblical quote for a moment – it’s there to make a relevant point.

Above is the well known phrase used by the title character in the play Hamlet by William Shakespeare; when Hamlet is speaking to Horatio, (Hamlet 1.5.167-8), He says, your philosophy (i.e., philosophy or learning in general). Hamlet suggests that human knowledge is limited: There are more things in heaven and Earth, Horatio, Than are dreamt of in your philosophy [science].

The emphasis here should really be on “dreamt of”, as Hamlet is pointing out how little even the most educated people can explain.

The relevant point being, just how true this is, for in reality we know so very little about everything!! As the scripture says ‘Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools.’

A fool is one who denies the reality of his creator. As usual, the Bible says it best in

Romans 1:22: “For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.”

In our humanity we often see things in a way that makes us feel comfortable, by adjusting our viewpoint. However, this can often means that our concept of those things is not as they really are.

It’s all a matter of perception.

We draw on personal experience and try to define an image from previously gathered information, which is not necessarily accurate, or relevant, to the new thing in front of us which is requiring definition.

A good example is what angels look like.

HUH?

In a previous post, we examined the descriptions of the seraphim on the mercy seat and the heavenly beings around Fathers’ throne; discovering they are not like the everyday creatures that we are familiar with. We have formed mental images of angels, gained mostly from paintings provided primarily by renaissance artists. Many of whom were under contract to the Vatican and religious authorities, who commissioned what they wanted for themselves and also what they chose the public should see.

The other beings mentioned along with the cherubim are the seraphim.

Seraphim

Hebrew: שָׂרָף śārāf, (sarap) this word seraph in the original

Plural שְׂרָפִים śərāfîm;

Latin: seraphim and seraphin (plural)

Greek: σεραφείμ serapheím

These are noted as the highest order or choir of angels according to christianity and the fifth rank of ten in the Jewish angelic hierarchy.

Remember the seasonal Carol?

They are the angelic beings who are attendants or guardians before God’s throne. They continually praise and glorify God, calling,

“Holy, Holy, Holy, is the Lord of Hosts”.

The only Bible reference is Isaiah 6:1-7.

Seraphim means Burners, the burning ones/glowing ones or Destroyers and as the closest Attendants at the Throne of God, they are represented as “standing” above the King as He sat upon His throne, ready at once to minister unto Him. This word, in the original, שָׂרַף, is used elsewhere only of the “fiery serpents” Numbers 21:6,8; Deut 8:15

The root-verb שרף (sarap) means to burn, and this is always in a literal sense. There are up to fifteen words in Hebrew that mean to burn, but sarap is used mostly in the sense of consuming or destructive burning.

The verb used to describe these Heavenly living creatures may hint that they glow brightly! Similar to how Moses’ face glowed brightly following his close proximity to God’s glory on Mount Sinai.

When Moses came down from Mount Sinai, and the people saw that the skin of his face was shining like a bright light, they were afraid to come near him.

Isaiah (6:2) saw the seraphim in a vision standing above the Father as He sat upon His throne. He described them as each having three pairs of wings,

with one pair they covered their faces (a token of humility);

with the second they covered their feet (a token of respect);

while with the third they flew.

They seem to have presented a general resemblance to the human figure as recorded in verse 6.

He saw their occupation as two fold:

First, to celebrate the praises of His holiness and power, verse 3; and

2. to act as the medium of communication between heaven and earth, verse 6.

Seraphim are so close to God that they are thought to be the angels of God’s unfathomable and endless love.

Scholars propose that in their true appearance they are so bright, that no mortal man could gaze upon them. However, they can apparently change their appearance when delivering messages to the human world. Isaiah was cleansed from sin by a seraph who touched a burning coal to his lips.

(Isaiah 6:6) Here one of them was the agent for burning the sin from the lips of the prophet with a coal off the altar.

The Hebrew word seraphim ser’-a-fim is not really a name as such, but rather what might be considered a category or group, a species or class of The First and Highest Order of created spiritual beings/entities.

The masculine noun שרף (sarap) denotes a fiery serpent and is used five times: Numbers 21:6 and 21:8, Deuteronomy 8:15, Isaiah 14:29 and 30:6. The exact same word is used in Isaiah 6:2 to describe the angelic beings known as Seraphim!

Sharrapu was a Babylonian name for the fire-god, Nergal. In Egypt there have been found eagle-lion-shaped figures guarding a grave, which have had the name seref applied. “Griffin” is the equivalent term in English.

First Mentioned: 3300-3100 BC

The griffin, griffon, or gryphon is a legendary creature with the body, tail, and back legs of a lion; the head and wings of an eagle; and sometimes an eagle’s talons as its front feet. 

In heraldry, the griffin’s combination of lion and eagle gains in courage and boldness. It is used to denote strength and military courage and leadership.

in Hebrew theology as the three highest orders of attendants to the Father, Seraphim are connected with Cherubim and Ophanim, and are superior to the angels who are messengers sent on various errands.

The word Angel means messenger.

The Archangels that we are familiar with are:

Michael meaning He who is like God;

Gabriel = God is my strength;

Raphael = healer of God;

Uriel = God is my light.

As the cherubim were often represented by the storm-clouds, so the seraphim were symbolized by the serpentine flashes of the lightning; but we read none of this in Isaiah’s vision.

In the New Testament/Brit Chadashah, in Rev 4:5, the only possible equivalent is, the living ones (mistranslated as beasts in the KJV) etc.

In the Greek ζῷον verse 6 Strongs 2226 zoon (zoology) – A Living Creature, animal, a living being; not therion – translated beast.

These then appear to be literal angelic beings and are clearly different from the:

Redeemed Elders of Rev. 4:9-11,

Ordinary angels in Rev.5:1-12,

Seraphim in Is. 6:1-8 and

Cherubim of Ezek. 1:4-28; 10:1-22

Here, as in Isaiah, they appear nearest the Father’s throne, supreme in praise of His holiness.

1 Peter 1:16 (Lev.)

Young’s Literal Translation because it hath been written, ‘Become ye holy, because I am holy;’.

 

(16) Be ye holy; for I am holy.—

The better reading here is, Ye shall he holy; it is still, however, a command, not a promise—except that all God’s commands are promises. The command comes some five or six times in the Book of Leviticus, addressed not only to the Levites, but to all the people. It would, therefore, apply twice over to the recipients of this letter by virtue of their twofold consecration, in the old and in the new Israel.

8270 holiness, as SET APART for God: Believers are holy, in that they are to BE SET APART from the world as God’s own people. Just as certain days and items are holy because they are set apart for God alone. 

8271 holiness, purpose of: God in His holiness desires a holy people amongst whom He can dwell, and who can effectively worship, witness to and serve Him as they prepare for a future with God and to be like God.

They all had 4 faces: calf, eagle, man and lion.

It appears that the Seraphim,

who are known in our culture as

handsome human-like angelic creatures,

were known to the Hebrews as

snake-like fireballs!

We like to designate creatures either according to what they look like, or else by some terminology that only covers their specific species.

e.g. A horse is a horse and we are not too concerned with what the word horse might actually mean.

A horsetail is a plant that looks like the tail of a horse, and a sea horse is a fish with a horse-like head.

In Hebrew, however, creatures are known mostly according to their behavior. Since creatures usually display multiple defining behaviors, many creatures are known by more than one name — one of the words for lion (ari) comes from the verb to gather— and it also means that one description often covers more than one creature.

e.g., the word סוס (sus), meaning to flash or dart, denotes both a horse and a swallow.

This is Hebrew thought, and in this thinking, to be, IS to do.

In the Bible, the word שרף (sarap) is used in two different scenes. In the most recognized one, it denotes the flying, supernatural six-winged creatures that surround God’s throne in the vision of Isaiah.

In Revelation 4 john also has a vision of God’s throne and sees what seems the same creatures. However, here they have only one face each. One has face like a lion the second face of a calf the third face of a man and the fourth an eagle.

(Revelation 4:8).

These creatures became known as the Seraphim, and although artists have tried to depict them, we really don’t have a clue what they may look like. To begin with, we don’t know their size, so they may be very small; small enough even to appear on someone’s head?? (Acts 2:3). Since their name is derived from a verb meaning, to burn, they may look like flames. However if their name was designed to indicate that is what they looked like, they would have been known by a word that means flame or fire. This is not the case because they are known as Burners or Destroyers.

They have six wings (Isaiah 6:2),

There is Scripture that seems to record that God has wings too!! (Psalm 17:8, 36:7, 57:1, 61:4, 91:4). Since we are made in God’s image and likeness (Genesis 1:26), do we have “wings” as well??  The Seraphim’s wings may not look at all like birds’ wings that we imagine and are familiar with.

Seraphim have faces but their wings cover them, so they may look like anything. They have feet, also covered by their wings, but not necessarily human feet; and the word for feet is so general, that we still really don’t know much about their appearance.

The point is, that they are not what we are used to seeing, as far as creatures go, and their appearance is secondary to their raison d’etre. Their prime mission is to guard the throne and serve the Lord.

The word CRIED, or SAID, here, is not meaning a whispered religious tone,

but it’s a declaration,

a command,

an actionable directive;

because holy = kadosh = set apart;.

Separate and set aside (for His purposes).

It would appear that the voices of the seraphim were loud enough to cause vibration and shaking which changes the understanding of this scene entirely!

The question of whether or not Seraphim are ‘angels’, remains a question. Biblical angels usually either look like humans or sound like them, and we don’t know if there are separate species of angels, or even if they exist as autonomous individuals.

Angels, Seraphim, Cherubim and spirits were created beings that’s about all we know, apart from what the scriptures tell us.

What we do know is that the Bible clearly indicates that there is much, much, more to creation than just us, even if we cannot see it all because it exists in another dimension beyond the scope of our physical eyes. Sometimes God opens our eyes like He did for Elisha and the chariots 2 kings 6:17-20

The other famous scene in which the word seraphim is prominently featured deals with the attack of the “fiery serpents” on Israel in the wilderness (Numbers 21:6).

It literally reads, “And God sent among the people the fiery serpents נָחָשׁ שְׂרָפִים

[saraphim naphashim] seraphim serpents”.

The word for serpent, nahash, is related to the words for bronze and the verb to divine, and the serpent scene of Numbers 21 may be about more than just an animal attack.

It has been suggested by certain Bible scholars over the years that that the creature referenced here may be the flying serpents.

Matthew Henry, in his famous Commentary on the Whole Bible writes:

They had impudently flown in the face of God himself, and the poison of asps was under their lips, and now these fiery serpents (which, it should seem, were flying serpents, Isaiah 14:29) flew in their faces and poisoned them.

The Lord then instructs Moses to create a שרף (sarap) and set it on a standard. Moses interprets the making of a seraph by making a “bronze serpent” — a nahash, nachash, nahashet; twice the word nahash, a fiery, burning, majestic being — and anyone who looks upon it is saved from the real ones.

Was the bronze image a Seraphim? One of Gods’ fiery attendants?

Apparently, the image of the bronze serpent was so impressive that the Israelites gave it a name —Nehushtan — and burned incense to it until king Hezekiah destroyed it (2 Kings 18:4).

Later still, Yeshua/Jesus compares His imminent crucifixion to Moses’ raising of the bronze serpent (John 3:14, also see 8:28 and 12:32).

Verse 8: “And the Lord said unto Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole: and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he looketh upon it, shall live.”

This passage is a beautiful picture of how those bitten by the Satanic curse of sin cannot heal themselves from sure death; but they need only look in faith to Christ’s work on the cross to live. Indeed, Christ applied this passage to himself: “And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life” (John 3:14-15). Yet it seems strange to employ the cursed snake (a symbol of Satan from Genesis 3:1 to Revelation 20:2) as the parallel of Christ.

While the Hebrew word naphash is clearly the word for common snakes, these commentators have concluded that the compound word saraphim – naphashim, should be translated “fiery flying serpents.”

It would appear that the saraph was a reptilian, snake-like creature, distinguished from common snakes predominantly by their ability to fly. the pterosaur identification is most reasonable. These flying snakes, or pterosaurs, could have attacked and overcome the Israelites from the air.

They would have formed an ideal picture of the Messiah, in that Christ was made like us, (made sin for us according to 2 Corinthians 5:21), but he was still fundamentally different (divine).

The winged serpent incorporates simultaneously the appearance of the snake and the lofty ability of flight in a unique animal. Moreover, the outstretched pterosaur on the pole would have formed a perfect cross!

It is likely that the New Testament author also referenced these fiery winged seraphim when writing to the Hebrews? “Who maketh his angels spirits, and his ministers a flame of fire” (Hebrews 1:7). The emphasis then, it would appear, is on the saraph’s bright, fiery nature.

The serpentine seraphim return in Isaiah 14:29, where the prophet foretells the destruction of Philistia, “from the root of the snake (nahash) comes a viper (tzepa, a word that indicates a snake producing venom), and his fruit (is) a flying seraph”. Actually, the word “flying” may also mean “dark”; see the name Ephah. The flying or dark seraph returns in Isaiah 30:6, where it is listed among the beasts of the Negev.

The other place where the term nacash is used is in connection with the garden of eden where the nachash conversed with eve. Well it was probably not a talking serpent but taking Ezek s description in 28:14 of the devil he was the covering cherub and Isaiah 14:12-14; the angel Lucifer as being one of the  created chief beings within the angelic class of creation of God.  

Ezek. 28:13 Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created.

Eve was probably accustomed to seeing the cherubim, seraphim and angelic host, seeing as they walked with God in the cool of the day. Neither did they show surprise at Lucifers presence, nor of the cherubim that blocked their return to the garden. So his appearance was not a shock or unusual to them.

This individual has a covering of 9 precious stones. 

Here is a fascinating parallel of the earthly Israel’s High Priest’s breastplate that also was covered with precious stones.  These 9 stones that covered Satan are an exact match for 9 of the 12 stones found on the High Priest’s covering (Exodus 28:17). 

Does this verse in Ezekiel reveals that Satan was a High Priest for God in heaven before he came to the earth? Are these stones and coverings just a amazing coincidence or is there some mystery information that God is revealing here?  On the High Priest’s breast plate there were 4 rows of three stones each.  Each row consisted of a different set of stones and each stone was unique.  We are told that these 12 stones on the High Priest’s covering were engraved with the names of 12 tribes of Israel.  However by matching off the stones found on Satan’s covering from the stones found on the High Priest’s breastplate it appears that Row 3 is missing completely.  One would think this is not an accident, it’s mathematically impossible for this to be a coincidence.  What does it all mean?  We could conclude that Satan lost three things that Israel had, or maybe Israel was given three things that Satan didn’t have?   

Anointing? Covenant? Relationship?

Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire. Darby Bible Translation Thou wast the anointed covering cherub, and I had set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou didst walk up and down in the midst of stones of fire.

Anointed comes from a Hebrew root word that means to smear with oil.  David was anointed king this way by Samuel.  

But this word here means to “spread like wings” and it is the only time this word occurs in the whole Bible. 

However, it is still important to see that Satan is said to be “anointed” of God.  This is a direct comparison to Jesus who was also said to be “anointed” of God with the Holy Ghost and power in Acts 10:38. God anoints people in the earth to perform specific tasks.  What this represents is a special divine ability to perform the duties being assigned to them.  From this verse we understand that angels can also be anointed by God to do specific jobs and assignments.  An anointing can involve supernatural ability and power, divine knowledge or wisdom to do what we do not fully understand how to do.  This reveals a lot about Satan and his abilities.

Then Satan is called a “cherub

Information is revealed about angels and God’s relationship with Satan before he sinned.  Is it possible that one of these two cherubs either side of God’s throne in heaven was originally Lucifer?  Now Yeshua/Jesus is at the right hand of the Father could that mean Yeshua/Jesus has taken Lucifer’s old place of authority and power?

Ezekiel 28:14 is how God describes Satan to us, that he was an anointed cherub and that his job or assignment was to “cover”. 

This Hebrew word means to cover as a protector or as a guard.  It can also mean a fenced in hedge of protection.  It can also mean to entwine as in join together. 

Amazing definitions for they imply a covenant relationship and that is very important to know.  was God in covenant with the angels of Heaven, including Satan? 

In Isaiah 6:2 there is a word describing what appears to be an angelic being. This is also a winged creature that clearly flies using their wings. It is not clear that this is describing Satan unless you look up the definition of the Hebrew Word “seraphim” in Strong’s. This word is many times translated as “fiery serpent” seems to describe Satan very well.  We clearly know from Genesis and Revelation that Satan is the “serpent” so we have a link to a new titled reference for this spiritual being.  A fiery serpent is a great symbolic representation for Satan.

  8. Was a Priest unto God? (Eze 28:13).

  9. Was called Lucifer a son of the early light (Isa 14:12)

  10. Named Lucifer means “Bright Morning Star”  (Isa 14:12)

Over the years Biblical scholars have speculated about the nature of the creature described in the Authorized Version as “the fiery flying serpent.”

“The burden of the beasts of the south: into the land of trouble and anguish, from whence come the young and old lion, the viper and fiery flying serpent,” (Isaiah 30:6).

Creationists over the years have suggested that this flying reptilian creature was a living pterosaur, still known in the region of Palestine at the time of Isaiah’s prophecy.1 Bible commentators have differed in their interpretation of these passages.

For example, E. J. Young writes of Isaiah 14:29:

“From one snake will come a poisonous serpent, and that poisonous serpent will produce another that is burning and flying.”2 He holds that Isaiah 30:6 references a real winged serpent and cites Herodutus 11.75; iii.109; and Ammianus Marcellinus xxii.15.3 (Marcellinus wrote in the fourth century about the ibis being a sacred bird in Egypt because of their encountering flocks of winged snakes, coming laden with poison from the marshes of Arabia, and overcoming them in the air, and devouring them before they quit their own region.) Motyer seems to side with the minority NIV translation “darting venomous serpent” but mentions “fiery flying one” as an alternate translation.4 The NAS renders this creature “flying serpent.” The Septuagint translation of Isaiah 14:29 is ofei petamenoi, which are clearly words for a flying reptile with no variants. From a more liberal scholarship perspective, the authors of the Revised Standard Version translate it “fiery flying serpent.” The BDB lexicon authors also render the creature “a flying serpent or dragon ” but go on to suggest that it had its origin in the Egyptian Serref and was “mythically conceived with serpent’s bodies (serpent deities).”

Since they are called seraphim…a term elsewhere applied to serpents (Num. 21:16; Isa. 14:29, 30:6), some scholars believe that they were serpentine or dragon-like in appearance. (Job 21.)

However, the chief meaning of the term may be “fiery” (Num. 21:6), so that the name of the snake is merely derivative (referring to their bite), and the use of the term for the ministering beings would indicate they were “fiery ones.”

There is no reason to dismiss automatically either of these possibilities. Composite figures are known from all over the ancient Near East, and while none is so far attested in Israel, it is possible that use was made of them. Such mysterious, awesome beings would be quite appropriate in this sort of vision. On the other hand, fire is everywhere associated with God’s holiness…so that it would be entirely appropriate for those who declare that holiness (v.3) to be “fiery” in their appearance.

Although to us its seems mythical, there are some historical and archaeological evidence in support of a pterosaur interpretation of these Old Testament passages.

Note that the nation of Philistia referenced in Isaiah 30 is geographically intermediate between the land of Israel and Egypt. This is the same region from which the ancient reports of pterosaurs come. Various historians told of small flying reptiles in Arabia and Egypt, recounted the virility of their poisons and described their predator, the ibis bird.18 The ancient authors Aristotle, Philae, Aelianus, Ammianus, Mela, Solinus, anonymous 4’th century Coptic monks, the 13’th century Armenian historian Matthew of Edessa, Solinus, Cicero, Aristotle, and Philae all reference flying serpents.

The well-respected Greek researcher Herodotus wrote:

There is a place in Arabia, situated very near the city of Buto, to which I went, on hearing of some winged serpents; and when I arrived there, I saw bones and spines of serpents, in such quantities as it would be impossible to describe. The form of the serpent is like that of the water-snake; but he has wings without feathers, and as like as possible to the wings of a bat.

In his third volume Herodotus goes on to tell how these animals could sometimes be found in the Arabian spice groves. He describes their size, coloration, and reproduction. It seems flying serpents were infamous for hanging in frankincense trees. When workers wanted to gather the tree’s incense, they would employ putrid smoke to drive the flying reptiles away.

Josephus’ account is particularly lucid. He tells of Moses, while still living in Pharoah’s court, leading an Egyptian army against Nubia: …but Moses prevented the enemies, and took and led his army before those enemies were apprised of his attacking them; for he did not march by the river, but by land, where he gave a wonderful demonstration of his sagacity; for when the ground was difficult to be passed over, because of the multitude of serpents, (which it produces in vast numbers, and indeed, is singular in some of those productions, which other countries do not breed, and yet such as are worse than others in power and mischief, and an unusual fierceness of sight, some of which ascend out of the ground unseen, and also fly in the air, and so come upon men at unawares, and do them a mischief,) Moses invented a wonderful stratagem to preserve the army safe, and without hurt; for he made baskets, like unto arks, of sedge, and filled them with ibes, and carried them along with them; which animal is the greatest enemy to serpents imaginable, for they fly from them when they come near them; and as they fly they are caught and devoured by them, as if it were done by the harts;

The Greek word used by Josephus for “snake” is the same one employed by Christ in John 3 (and also by Paul in I Corinthians 10:9) to describe the attacking serpents in the wilderness (ophis or ophesi in its the masculine, dative, plural form).

It is also the same as the Septuagint version of the wilderness account.

This is the common Greek word for snake, so perhaps there was no unique Greek word for pterosaur like the Hebrew “saraph.” Instead the Greek authors fell back on the phrase “flying serpent” as the way to distinguish the winged reptilian creature, just like the KJV translators did in English.

One thing is for certain there are more things in heaven and earth than we have any concept of even in our wildest dreams and imagination.

And just because it does not fit into our idea of what they should look like; the heavenly creatures that surround the throne, are there by Fathers’ choice, and His concepts and ways are not ours.

We may should get prepared to be truly wowed by the things that are prepared for us in our future, for as yet eye has not seen some of these magnificent and heavenly creatures

who serve Him day and night and while still on earth we can join them in their singing – LOUD VIBRATING COMMAND HOLY HOLY HOLY is the Lord of Hosts the whole earth is full of His Glory.

So the mercy seat could be said to be a kind of womb (prophetically), where the spiritual new birth was to be initiated/conceived and ratified in Jesus/Yeshua’s blood.

Out of the mercy/womb seat came new resurrected life FOR THE LIFE IS IN THE BLOOD and the reconciliation to the Father.

Brief yet fascinating report of a creature called a Ropen:

Although some superstition surrounds this remarkable creature, there are consistencies in the accounts from around the island regions (peoples that do not have any communication links) that lend credibility to the claims. The most remarkable part of the description is that the creature is reported to have a biolumiscent capability, like a firefly. Carl Baugh of the Creation Evidence Museum conducted two Ropen expeditions to PNG with Jim Blume, one to the island of Umboi and another further north to the Manus region. While exploring around the Manus islands, it became clear to Blume and Baugh that the pterosaur-like creature reported in that region were a different species from those observed further south. It was smaller (about 1 meter wingspan), tan in color (by native reports), and reddish in its glow. Coloration in the reports from Umboi, on the other hand, vary from glittering black to a very dark grey. The bioluminscence color is described as a white/bluish glow. Indeed, many who see the glowing creature fly past them describe it as a shimmering white light with a rainbow of colors being thrown off.

On one expedition to PNG, Blume and Baugh followed up on reports from a particular island in the Manus group that claimed these creatures were living in the caves dotting the island. While in a boat in the early evening they observed what appeared to be an oval shaped luminscent flying object gliding from the hillside down along the bay. After observing the pulsing light-greenish light and looking through a monocular night scope for about 20 minutes they lost contact with the object. The next morning, Baugh snapped a picture of a strange clawed print on the muddy beach.

Could it be that a living pterosuar still exists today in PNG? Is this strange luminescence the reason that the ancient prophet refers to the flying serpent as “fiery”?

It seems that the Ropen posseses the ability to turn its internal light on and off at will. Also, reports suggest the presence of a secretion that drips behind when the underbelly glows. Reports suggest that this secretion is alkaline and burns the skin of those who come in contact with the creature!
