One who is coming

said John, shouting from the Judean desert, as a prophetic forerunner of the Messiah with his call for repentance; and his warnings to the Pharisees and Sadducees, calling them “You brood of vipers!”

His main focus was Repent!

In Matthew 3:12

Hebrew : תשובה,

literally meaning: return.

tshuva or teshuva

pronounced: te-shoov-ah

to turn from the way you were going and return to God for healing, forgiveness and instruction in righteousness.

תשובה

Teshuvah, a Hebrew word often translated as repentance; however it is more accurately understood as turning back/returning – shuv to our Heavenly Father/YHWH and to obey Him. Deut. 4:30

 

In Modern Hebrew Teshuvah means an “answer” to a shelah, or a question. God’s love for us is the question, and our teshuvah – our turning of the heart toward Him – is the answer.

Teshuvah is one of the great gifts God gives each of us – the ability to turn back to Him and seek healing for our brokenness.

The book of the words of Isaiah the prophet foretold his message and his role: “A voice cries: ‘In the wilderness prepare the way of the LORD; make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Every valley shall be lifted up, and every mountain and hill be made low; the uneven ground shall become level, and the rough places a plain. And the glory of the LORD shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together, for the mouth of the LORD has spoken.’” [Isaiah 40:3]

John declared that the kingdom of heaven was at hand and called sinners to repentance/Teshuvah. He was very careful to distinguish his role and message from that of the Messiah, whose arrival he announced, and whose WAY he made straight.

John made it clear, I baptize you with water but he will baptize with the Holy Spirit and with fire. He who is coming after me is mightier than I, John acknowledged. His sandals I am not worthy to carry.

Directly addressing the Pharisees and Sadducees, he called them out as a brood of vipers and warning them that even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees. Judgment is at hand. Do not presume to say to yourselves . . . .  John understood their hearts and their future rejection of the Son of God and Son of Man and he warned that the unfruitful tree will be thrown to the fire.

The eschatological imagery is clearly that the wheat represents those who are truly repentant, the chaff those who are not.

Messiah will judge the world, and those that are worthy would be brought into his barn/kingdom while those that were unworthy will burn in unquenchable fire.

His winnowing fork is in His hand to clear His threshing floor and to gather the wheat into His barn; but He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.

Verse 12 teaches us that Jesus will come as one with a winnowing fork.

The winnowing fork separates the wheat from the chaff.

Figuratively, He will gather the wheat, or true followers of Jesus/Yeshua, into the barn; but the chaff will be burned up. 

As with the axe already placed against the tree in the preceding verse, the winnowing fork is already in hand, emphasizing the nearness of judgment. 

We know what an Axe is and what it is for; however, we may not be so familiar with a winnowing fork especially if we are not from an agricultural background.

These references were used because those hearing them were familiar not only with what they looked like, but what they were used for; and the whole process of farming, growth and harvest. So together with their knowledge and obedient celebration of the Appointed times/harvest cycles of the Lord it made complete sense to them.

 So this description would have been obvious to John’s listeners. At the time of the harvest a winnowing fork would be used to toss the stalks and heads of grain into the air, usually in the face of a breeze.

The wheat would fall to the ground to be collected, but the chaff would blow away to be collected and burned. The Lord of the harvest will collect his grain into the barn, but the chaff will be burned with unquenchable fire.

His winnowing-shovel is in His hand, and He will make a thorough clearance of His threshing-floor, gathering His wheat into the storehouse, but burning up the chaff in unquenchable fire.

At the season of Shavuot we remember part of the event celebrated, was the fire of the Ruach HaKodesh/Holy Spirit, falling upon those who had patiently waited since Messiah had instructed them to tarry in Jerusalem; the place of His presence, preparing their hearts while counting the Omer.

This season also remembers Ruth and the meeting with Boaz on the threshing floor in Jerusalem.

So it is a place – location specific.

And we are reminded that the threshing floor in question is that very same location that David purchased and brought the ark/presence of God to reside. And where his son Solomon eventually built the Temple.

2 Sam.24:21

 Araunah said, “Why has my lord the king come to his servant?”

“To buy your threshing floor,”

David answered,

“so I can build an altar to the LORD, 

As we understand more of the life culture and times of Messiah we gain more understanding of His words and how they relate to us; and how they can enable us to mature in Him.

The construction of the floors are very simple. Comprising a circular space, from 30-50 feet, (9-15 meters), in diameter, and made level. The ground is smoothed down and beaten solid so that the earth will not get mixed with the grain during threshing. Over time, the floors, especially on the mountains, are covered with a tough, hard grass. They are often the prettiest, and in many places the only, green plots in the village, here any traveller appreciates to pitch his tent. Daniel calls them summer threshing floors; and this is the most appropriate name for them, since they are only used in that season of the year.

Why A Winnowing Fork?

And what exactly does it do?

John describes the Messiah as a discerning judge, who will separate the good from the bad because, Winnowing forks, generally made of wood, were common at the time, and several dating from this period have been found.

Modern scholars mostly agree that the term “winnowing fork” is the most accurate but older versions have fan, shovel, broom, amongst other translations. 

The description of the winnowing or threshing process was the one farmers used to separate husks from grains of wheat.

(Keep in mind the process is spiritual for us.)

Then The Process of Winnowing:

The stalks and grain were thrown up for the wind to separate the grains of wheat from the chaff or husks which cannot be used because they are inedible.

They used winnowing fans (or forks) to toss the harvested grain into the air.

Winnowing the grain was accomplished by the use of either a broad shovel or of a wooden fork which had bent prongs.

With this instrument, the mass of chaff, straw, and grain was thrown against the wind. Because there was generally a breeze blowing in the evening, this was the time when it was normally done.

The wheat berry is surrounded by a sliver of dry husk that has to be separated from the wheat.  After threshing, which removed most of the bigger stuff, harvesters used either a fork or a basket to toss the wheat up into the wind. 

The wind blows through the tossed wheat and the chaff, which is very light, dislodges from the wheat in the action of winnowing. 

The wheat falls to the ground into a nice pile of relatively clean, useable grain.

 

Winnowing separates the good and useful from the worthless.

It cleans.

 

“His winnowing fork is in his hand.”

This metaphor perfectly describes Yeshua/Jesus’ actions.

There will come a time when God does this work of separating in a final sense, those whose names are written in the Lambs Book of Life, from those whose aren’t. 

His winnowing fork is in His hand – applies to us now and to the content of our hearts.

Some separating needs to take place.

The chaff can also refer to sin in the lives of the overcomers, and sin needs to be removed, if not willingly then through the winnowing and sifting processes. Then good fruit needs to come forth and be seen.

The world needs to see His Bride becoming more like her Bridegroom.

So Naomi Said to Ruth concerning Boaz:

“Behold, he winnoweth barley tonight in the threshing floor”

(Ruth 3:2).
When the Bible speaks of the farmer’s fan, it does not mean that some instrument was used to increase the speed or movement of the wind. It meant, the fan was the shovel or wooden fork used when unseparated grain and straw was thrown against the wind.

In Jeremiah 15:7, he tells of God using a fan to winnow His people Israel:

I have

winnowed them with a fan

in the gates of the land.

The chaff (the unwanted husks) would separate from the grain and be lifted away by the breeze, while the heavier grain would settle back onto the ground.

When the grain and straw, not as yet separated, are thrown into the air, the wind causes the mass of material to fall as follows:

Since the grain is the heaviest, it naturally falls beneath the fan. The straw is blown to the side into a heap, and the lighter chaff and the dust are carried beyond into a flattened row formed by the wind.

This gave the Psalmist David, his picture:

“The ungodly are not so, but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away” (Psa. 1:4).

As Scriptures often indicate the chaff is burned.

And the flame consumeth the chaff  (Isa. 5:24).

John the Baptist was familiar with the winnowing process and the burning of the chaff which is why he said:

“Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire” (Matt. 3:12; Luke 3:17).

Sifting the grain:
When the winnowing process is over, then comes the sifting of the grain.

The wheat or barley will still be more or less mixed with certain amounts of chaff, little stones, and perhaps some tares.

Sifting is therefore necessary before the grain can be ground into meal.

The sifter sits on the floor, and shakes the sieve which contains the grain, until the chaff begins to appear on the top, and this is blown away by the sifter. Here, the stones and tares are removed.

 
Yeshua/ Jesus made reference to the sifting process in Luke 22:31. He said: 

Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you all as wheat: But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not; and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren.

Jesus/Yeshua, is referring to ALL of the 12 ( the word you here is plural). This indicates that ALL who follow Him will also be sifted as they were.

Before separating a part from itself – it has to be broken!

The image He chose, that of sifting like wheat, is painfully graphic. The picture is of grain in a sieve, where the head of grain is taken apart (cf. Amos 9:9). Our English idiom of picking someone to pieces or taking someone apart, brings a similar image to mind.

In other words, hasatan has tried his best to separate all of you from me, like chaff from wheat.

He was warning them that ALL of them would be attacked by the devil but, as their leader, Peter would be most obviously singled out. Just as satan would temporarily succeed in scattering the disciples by striking down the Chief Shepherd, he would also temporarily knock Peter down.

Once this process is completed, the farmer could then gather the grain and store it in his barn.

 Transfer these images to our lives and see the process for those who will follow Him.

This was the image John used to describe the ultimate judgment Messiah will bring. After using his winnowing fan, He will clear his threshing floor, gathering the good grain into His barn and burning the unwanted chaff with unquenchable fire.

This reference His threshing floor today, is to the temple, of which we are, specifically the sanctuary where His Spirit/ruach/presence reside/abides/lives.

The outer court of the Temple was open to all and sin had to be allowed there because they came to bring their sacrifices to the altar to obtain forgiveness through the covering by/of innocent blood.

Now Jesus/Yeshua is going to clear/purge His threshing floor that is, those who are His that still have sin in their lives. It’s the preparation process, the final one, before the gathering in of the grain to His Barn.

This depiction of Jesus/Yeshua as the one who separates good from bad, then gathers the good to Himself and burns the rest. This may not be our favorite image of Messiah from the scriptures however, it is one that John the Baptist and the evangelists after him wanted us to hear. We are not supposed to be afraid of Messiah or of future judgment, but we are supposed to be forewarned and aware: What we do and who we are matters to God.

WHY?

Because, we cannot be with Jesus/Yeshua, in his warm barn full of good grain, unless we are ready.

Why Fire?

Because the Messiah will be mighty and will baptize with the Holy Spirit and fire. John then describes the Messiah as a discerning judge who will separate the good from the bad.

For individuals, it is to burn away all that is not of Himself. All flesh will one day be consumed but until then, we are to eliminate the fleshly things of this life while still in the physical body.

His Holy fire purges the flesh of impurities and cleanses our hearts and minds. This is of course is the view we have now that since Jesus/Yeshua came, died and was resurrected and said He would never leave or forsake us because He was leaving His Spirit, the comforter with us. His Ruach/Spirit, came and was released into the earth and received by individuals who were properly prepared vessels.

Let this be a timely warning to us, because followers of Messiah must never be so naïve as to think that satan pays most attention to those who have already surrendered to his demonic powers. In fact, the opposite is true. It is those who follow Yeshua/Jesus and have a Godly reputation who have targets on their backs.

 Hasatan/adversary, cares little about professing believers who are not seriously following Messiah because they are no threat to his kingdom.

2 Cor. 2:11 says, We must not knowingly allow him to take advantage of our weakness, or remain ignorant of his schemes, however, we must also never minimize our personal responsibility. Surely we throw open the door to making the devil’s work so much easier, whenever we allow our pride to control us and we can fall when we least expect it.

“In the story of Peter’s fatal self-confidence and pitiable fall every believer has a permanent and powerful warning never to rely arrogantly on his own strength. A healthy confidence is indeed necessary to every Christian, but this must be in the sense of reliance on God—i.e. faith, not in our own resources, but in the power given to us by Him” (Geldenhuys).

“Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall” (1 Corinthians 10:12).

How do we do that?

We cooperate with His working in us…the process…all of it…

Fortunately for us, the winnowing process has already begun. The words of Yeshua/Jesus and his forerunner John the Baptist have already begun threshing us, separating the worthless, husky part of us from the valuable, substantial grain. Our will must be surrendered to His will, it is that part of us that needs to be broken the rebellious part that makes up who we are spiritually, just like that of a wild horse needing to broken to be of use to his owner. We are to yield willingly and then the process is not so painful and takes much less time!

The sifting is happening now… so don’t be alarmed or discouraged..you are not alone..

12 Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you: 13 But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ’s sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy. 1 Peter 4:12-13

Cast Your Cares on Him … 8 Be sober-minded and alert. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. 9 Resist him, standing firm in your faith and in the knowledge that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kinds of suffering. 10 And after you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to His eternal glory in Christ, will Himself restore you, secure you, strengthen you, and establish you.…1Peter5:9

But I have prayed for you, that your faith fail not:

He prays for us just as He prayed for Peter.

The faithful preacher is like the winnowing fork in the Lord’s harvest.

True gospel preaching leads to wheat collected into the barn, but also leads to chaff collected for the burning. It is not the most heartwarming message, however, it is the glory of the calling of a true minister of His Gospel and the end result is the best conclusion we can ever have…eternal life in the Fathers presence.

Sifted but saved!

We are facing difficult days with unprecedented challenges.

There will be only one place to hide…IN HIM…Get into the Ark/Yeshua/Jesus.

Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. Col. 3:3

and of course among others Psalm 91!

Make these scriptures your own – stand on them – they are the rock of our salvation and with this firm foundation underneath us along with His everlasting arms, we will withstand every storm and He is with us even to the end of the age,

Our calling is clear, we are to

preach the Word,

proclaim the Gospel,

herald the truth

that the kingdom of the heavens is at hand.

Be humble,

take courage,

be not afraid,

the time of sifting His harvest is here.

50 Days Later-An Earthly and Spiritual Harvest: Pentecost-Shavuot

Now we are at the fourth Hebrew Feast called Shavuot in Hebrew and Pentecost in Greek, from the word for 50.

Pronounced sha-voo-ote.

In parts of Europe it is also known as Whitsun, Whit Sunday or Whitsuntide.

 

In Deuteronomy 16:16, 17 Shavuot is known as the Feast of Weeks in addition to being called first fruits.

The name Shavuot, comes from the word, weeks. In Hebrew, the word weeks is Strong’s 7620, Shaabu’ot.

It is not mentioned by name but referenced in John 5:1. So called because it falls exactly 7 weeks and one day after the first fruits of Unleavened Bread following Passover.

Shavout was the Holy day that launched the reaping of wheat, the summer harvest and the second first fruits of the year.

It was during this feast that God’s Holy Spirit filled them and they spoke in tongues and 3000 came to the Lord. They were the first fruits of the congregation of believers.

These 3000 were all Israelites/Jewish men and women who had come in obedience to Jerusalem.  This was one of the three pilgrimage festivals of: Passover, Shavuot and Sukkot, where all Israelite males are to appear before God with offerings, and give according to his blessings. They came to see and be seen before the ‘face of God’ in the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. This was not a new Holy date for them, their ancestors had been obediently keeping this command since God gave the dates to Moses in Leviticus 23:15

This is why it is also the anniversary of the giving of the 10 Commandments and the Torah, (first five books of the old Testament), on Mount Sinai. Here, God’s covenant was made with the children of Israel to come and dwell with His presence among them, to be contained in the ark of the covenant. Ex.19:1

The Israelites accepted the covenant agreements and declared ‘all He has said we will do.’ It was in effect the marriage of God to His beloved Israel and Israel became a nation that day. A chosen generation, a people set apart to Him a Holy nation, a royal priesthood. Ex 19:6 ‘And ye shall be unto Me a kingdom of priests, and an Holy nation. These are the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel.’

For us as believers, grafted in by grace, Holy, sanctified, set apart as 1Pet 2:9 tells us;

‘But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an Holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of Him who hath called you out of darkness into His marvellous light.’

Everything is connected, when we only remember some parts of the Holy days, it does not make as much sense.

50 days earlier, The children of Israel sacrificed their first Passover lambs; ate their first meal consisting of lamb, unleavened bread, and bitter herbs; fled away from Pharaoh and the Egyptians; and emerged alive from the Red Sea, all in the first month (Aviv).  They traveled for the remainder of the first month and throughout all of the second month (Zif or Iyyar).  The day the children of Israel walked out of the Red Sea (Aviv 17) is counted as day one, then Sivan 1 would have been day 45 of their journey.  They then set up camp in front of Mount Sinai which, according to Gal. 4:25, is in (Saudi) Arabia.

Although not specifically stated, it was probably the next day (day 46) that Moses ascended the mountain to speak with God Ex.19:3-6; and the following day (day 47), Moses returned to the people and told them everything God had said (19:7).  The people agreed with what God had said, so the next day (day 48) Moses brought this information back to the Lord (19:8,9). 

The Lord told Moses to return to the people that very day (day 48) and “…consecrate them today and tomorrow…and be ready by the third day, because on that day the Lord will come down on Mount Sinai in the sight of all the people” (19:10,11).  The third day (Sivan 6), then, would be the fiftieth day of their trek, beginning with the day they came up out of the Red Sea (Aviv 17). 

For Shavuot, it is added also that ‘you shall remember that you were a slave in Egypt,’ (Deut 16:12). In reminding ourselves, we understand both the natural and spiritual meaning to what it means to be a ‘slave in Egypt.’ For us it was to have been, ‘In bondage to the ways of the world’, and without God’s provision through Jesus, we have no hope of gaining freedom, no promise of forgiveness of sin or redemption unto eternal life in the Fathers presence. 

God’s appearance upon Mount Sinai, on the sixth day of the sixth month (Sivan), was in a manner that the children of Israel would not soon forget: 

On the morning of the third day there was thunder and lightning, with a thick cloud over the mountain, and a very loud trumpet blast.  Everyone in the camp trembled. …  Mount Sinai was covered with smoke, because the Lord descended on it in fire.

The smoke billowed up from it like smoke from a furnace, the whole mountain trembled violently, and the sound of the trumpet grew louder and louder.

Then Moses spoke and the voice of God answered him (Ex.19:16,18,19).

The people were too awestruck and afraid to have God speak directly to them Ex 20:18; Deut 5:5. So, then and later, God spoke to Moses the Ten Commandments and the Law (the Torah):

the instructions and guidelines by which He wanted His people to live and the means by which sacrifices were to be presented.

This was a manifestation of the same fire Moses saw in Midian many years before.

While unleavened bread symbolizes Jesus’ sinless humanity (Luke 22:19),

 the two loaves used at Shavuot / Pentecost contain yeast and symbolize that the Body of Messiah Jesus (the congregation) would be made up of sinners as well.

The two loaves used at Shavuot also symbolize Jews and Gentiles, demonstrating the fulfillment of God’s covenant with Abraham to bless all the nations through him (Gen. 12:3; see Gal. 3:26-28).

Here is also where the story of Ruth is remembered.

On the surface a seemingly simple story, however it is profound in depth. It describes the loyalty and kindness of the gentile Moabitess, who sought refuge under the wings of the Divine presence after the death of her Israelite husband. It is also the story of the Scripture guidance and nurturing provided by her mother-in-law. Further it is the account of the older judge who became her kinsman redeemer and from whose union emerged the hidden spark of the Messiah.

Boaz became Ruth’s ‘kinsman redeemer’, (a type of Jesus the Messiah). It was prophetic of the future ‘grafting in‘, of the gentiles. (Also called, the heathen or goyim and refers to all people from non-Israelite nations.)

Boaz was true to his responsibilities and married Ruth. They had a boy and named him Obed, (Oved). He was the father of Jesse, the father of David and therefore part of the ancestral line from which Jesus/Yeshua was descended.

We as gentiles, are indeed grafted in by grace to the royal household of Jesus the King of Kings. Everything is connected and not one story can be left out, nor does it stand alone.

 

We are to count 50 days, including the Day of First fruits, to the day after the 7th weekly Sabbath, which is Shavuot (Pentecost) (Leviticus 23:15-16). The 50th day is Shavuot the first fruits of the wheat harvest.

An offering of two loaves of bread was made with fine flour and baked with leaven. The bread is to be waved as a wave offering before the Lord.  (Lev. 23:16,17,20).

‘bring two loaves made of fine flour, baked with yeast, as a wave offering of first fruits to the Lord’ ( Lev. 23:17).

These loaves of leavened bread were significant as a ‘mikrah’ (rehearsal), of something that God had in mind for a time in the future.

This subtle instruction indicates a great truth.

These two ‘wave loaves’ are of equal weight and they are baked with leaven called ‘firstfruits.’  Since they are baked with leaven, they represent sinful man (certainly not, for example, Jesus and the Holy Spirit, who are unleavened) and since they are ‘first fruits’, they are redeemed or resurrected men.  Obviously God was predicting here that the Body of Jesus would be comprised of two parts, Jew and Gentile, of course it was originally and has always been part Jewish, since the Lord inevitably retains a remnant of His People.

We are the ONE NEW MAN: Israelite/Jew and Gentile/Heathen TOGETHER

Eph. 2:15

 Counting the ‘days between’, the disciples continued in prayer. Acts 2:42; and waited obediently and patiently for Jesus had promised the Holy Spirit would come and live in believers’ hearts (John 14:16, 26; 15:26; 16:7), and He said it would happen soon after His ascension (Acts 1:4-5)

They were Preparing their hearts to receive the gift of Holy Spirit. The comforter, the One who comes alongside to help, to empower, to quicken us, and make us alive. 

Acts 2 records the fulfillment of Shavuot as the promised Holy Spirit descends, indwells believers and ushers in the church age, which we are still in.

Holy Spirit descended upon each of them with the same Holy fire that some 3300 years before, had protected their ancestors in the wilderness.

The same ‘fire’ from the mountain that had made Moses face shine.

Now 3300 (approx.) years later His presence is with them and each individual becomes the physical container of His Glory. 

On the Day of Pentecost, as descendants of the children of Israel from all over the world gathered in Jerusalem, they read, among other Scriptures, Ezek. 1:1-28 and 3:12; and Hab. 2:20 – 3:19. These passages speak of the brightness of God’s glory. Ezekiel heard wind and voices, and saw fire; later, he witnessed the departure of the Shekinah glory from the Temple.

There was expectation on this special day that the Shekinah glory would return and take its rightful place in the Temple’s Holy of Holies. But instead, as Luke records in Acts 2, there was wind, fire, and voices (the 120 speaking in tongues). Rather than returning to reside in the Temple, the Holy Spirit took up residence in the ‘temple of God’ (1 Cor. 3:16), the bodies of believers in Messiah, Jesus of Nazareth. 

(Acts 2:5). When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place.  Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting.  They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them.  All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues [languages] as the Spirit enabled them.

‘…there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven.  When they heard this sound [the speaking in tongues], a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard them speaking in his own language’. (Acts 2:5,6).

In this way, God began to use believers, indwelled by the Holy Spirit, to be His witnesses, beginning in Jerusalem (Acts 1:8). The 3,000 saved on the Day of Pentecost were Jews. Filling them with a bold spirit that compelled them to testify of Him in joy and truth, preaching the good news to all who would listen. 

Just as faithful Israelites brought the first fruits of their wheat harvest to the Temple on Shavuot, so the 3,000 Jewish believers on the Day of Pentecost were the first fruits of the Body of Messiah, (the congregation/church).

Peters was ‘on fire’ for the Lord and his first sermon after Pentecost is recorded in Acts 2:1-41.

This feast is very much about those of us who are grafted in by His Grace.

Jesus/Yeshua and Pentecost/Shavuot

Jesus, through the Holy Spirit, fulfilled the 4th Hebrew Spring festival at Pentecost.

The Feast of Weeks always had been considered a time of offering ‘firstfruits’ to the Lord. Lev 23:20; Num.28:26, just as the Feast of First fruits had been.  Similarly, Pentecost was the beginning of the Holy Spirit’s moving upon many people who would be the ‘first fruits’ from spiritual death—‘born again,’ as it were—into spiritual Life in Jesus. John 3:3-7.

At Mount Sinai, there was an unmistakable, extraordinary, supernatural manifestation of God, to those whom He had chosen to perceive it firsthand.  At that point in time, though, God still was ‘untouchable’; and the people were so afraid to hear God speak that Moses had to be the ‘mediator’ between God and the children of Israel.

In Jerusalem on Pentecost, the manifestation of God, in Holy Spirit, not only was perceived but also received by those who believed upon Jesus as Messiah and Lord.  Jesus, manifested in the Holy Spirit, was (and is) the ultimate “mediator” between God and His people.

Before His crucifixion, Jesus told His disciples that He was “…going to the Father” John 14:12, 28; 16:10. In other words, He was going to leave them by ascending into heaven (after His resurrection) to join God the Father.  Then He made this promise:

‘And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor [or Comforter] to be with you forever—the Spirit of truth.  The world cannot accept Him, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him.  But you know Him, for He lives with you and will be in you.  I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.  Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me.  Because I live, you also will live.’ John 14:16-19.

Jesus said that He was leaving but that the Father would send another (the Counselor or Comforter) in His place.  But then Jesus said, ‘I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you and …you will see me’.  Later He said, ‘In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me’.  

How could this possibly be?  Was Jesus ‘coming or going’?

Actually, and wonderfully, He was going to do both. Holy Spirit would come to dwell within all believers, enabling them spiritually to ‘see’ Jesus, John 14:19.  There is not a thought, motive, purpose, or action that the Father, the Son, and Holy Spirit do not share in common.  Therefore, when Jesus claimed that the Counselor (Holy Spirit) was coming, yet in another place implied that ‘He’ was coming, there was no contradiction; Jesus was (and is) present in and through the Holy Spirit of God.

Meaning of Pentecost

Finally, this ties counting the days and the two first fruits together. Just as Jesus ties His Resurrection, Ascension and the giving of the emersion of His Holy Spirit at the Feast of Weeks.

In the same way as the farmers could not use the wheat crop until the offering of the loaves; so also Jesus the Bread of Life, had to ascend, before the rest of ‘the grain’, (His disciples), could take Holy Spirit and be used in power as recorded in Acts 2.

After Pentecost they healed the sick, delivered the oppressed and raised the dead.

It was REAL and they were forever changed. When God truly touches your life you are never the same again. There is a fire in your heart and in your bones (Jer. 20:9), and nothing else but God will satisfy. (Ps. 90:14; 107:9)

The zeal of God consumed them, (Ps.69:9) and they were on fire, a fire that cannot be quenched, the same fire that burns but does not harm, like that which Moses saw in the burning bush.

The description is of tongues of fire upon each one and may seem a little strange as some artists depict it. However, when you experience the power of the living God it is unmistakable.

It is to the Jew first and then to the gentile (Rom 1:16; 2:10) and because of their obedience to the Lord’s commands and also because of Jesus’ sacrifice, we are grafted in by His grace. (Rom. 11:17) This enables us to receive the benefits of salvation, forgiveness, mercy and the opportunity to be filled with His Holy Spirit.

His priceless gift is given to every believer. 

He did not come to abolish the law (Matt. 5:17) and as Jesus told the rich young ruler to keep the commandments, He quoted Deuteronomy 6:4–9; 11:13–21 and Numbers 15:37–43

Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might and let your desire be for Him. Jesus, the Father and Holy Spirit are one and with His indwelling power we are enabled to accomplish that which is not possible by our own abilities and strength.

For as Matt.19:26; Luke 18:27 remind us..

 The things which are impossible with men are possible with God.

We can experience Pentecost every day and not for a purely personal experience but to empower us to do His will and fulfill the purpose for which we are reminded here, Exodus 8:1 .. I set you free to serve Me.

The same is also true for us. We are called to leave all our idols behind, which is often hard in this materialistic, Nikolatian, humanistic, leisure filled age. Old habits die hard! As with the children of Israel in the wilderness and we often fall short in our focus on material things, instead of doing the things Jesus brings out in Matthew 25:35.

Shavout is important to believers because it ties deliverance, freedom and salvation, celebrated at Passover with Jesus crucifixion, to His resurrection and firstfruits of unleavened bread. His ascension 40 days later and then his sending the emersion/saturation of Holy Spirit on the first fruits of Shavout giving us the power to live victorious lives and to witness to non-believers.

Jesus is the promise and reality of the 10 commandments made flesh.

 This does not mean these were the first people to receive the gift of eternal life, just that they were the first to obtain access to numerous gifts of the Holy Spirit.

When invited, God’s Holy Spirit dwells inside anyone who believes in Jesus’ physical, bodily resurrection from death, one who accepts Jesus as Savior and Lord of one’s life, and who looks forward with great anticipation to the miraculous resurrection and eternal perfection of one’s own body.  Paul said that “…we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies” (Rom.8:23).
