Questions Scribes And Pharisees Ask

The one who asked this question,

asked it to test Messiah.

Mark 12:28-34

  1. And when one of the scribes came, and heard them disputing together, and saw that he had answered them well, he put a question to him, Which is the first commandment of all?

  2. 29. And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God is one Lord. 30. And, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength; this is the first commandment. 31. And the second, which is like it, is this, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself: there is no other commandment greater than these. 32. And the scribe said to him, Master, thou hast answered well with truth, that there is one God, and there is no other besides him. 33. And that to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love his neighbor as himself, is better than all the burnt offerings and sacrifices. 34. And Jesus, when he saw that he had replied skillfully, said to him, Thou art not far from the kingdom of God. And after that, no man ventured to put a question to him.

Matthew 22:37-40

  1. But when the Pharisees heard that he had put the Sadducees to silence, they assembled together. 35. And one of them, a doctor of the law, put a question to him, tempting him, and saying, 36. Master, which is the great commandment in the law? 37. Jesus saith to him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. 38. This is the first and great commandment. 39. And the second is like it, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as much as thyself. 40. On these two commandments the whole law and the prophets depend.

Luke 10:25-28

  1. And, lo, a certain lawyer  1rose up, tempting him, and saying, Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life? 26. And he said to him, What is written in the law? How readest thou? 27. He answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbor as thyself. 28. And he said to him, Thou hast answered right: do this, and thou shalt live.

Master, which is the great commandment in the law?

He calls Him “master, Rabbi, or doctor”,

as the Sadducees had in Matthew 22:24.

Which is the great commandment in the law?

Notice this translation does not read

the greatest but the great.

That is, the great/greatest commandment,

or

the one most important.

Before we look deeper at Messiahs specific answer we should consider that the question is not which of the laws was the greatest, the oral, or the written law. The Jews give the preference to the law delivered by word of mouth; they prefer the traditions of the elders before the written law of Moses; but the question was about the written law of Moses; and not merely about the decalogue, or whether the commands of the first tablet were greater than those of the second, as was generally thought; or whether the affirmative precepts were not more to be regarded than negative ones, which was their commonly received opinion; but about the whole body of the law, moral and ceremonial, delivered by Moses: and not whether the ceremonial law was to be preferred to the moral, which they usually did. Yeshua/Jesus had already made a contribution to the discussion by setting the ethical above the ritual.

Matthew 15:1-20, cf. Matthew 19:18-22.

The point of this question was:

which kind of command is great in the law?

That is, what kind of a commandment must it be to constitute it a great one?

Not, which commandment is greatest as compared with the others?

One of them, an expert in the law, tested Him with a question:

Teacher, which commandment is the greatest in the Law?

Which is the great commandment . . .?  Literally, of what kind. The questioner asked as if it belonged to a class. Messiah’s answer is definite, “This is the first and great commandment.”

Matthew 22:36 f. What kind of a commandment (qualitative, comp. Matthew 19:18) is great in the law; what must be the nature of a commandment in order to constitute it great? The commandment, then, which Yeshua/Jesus singles out as the great one κατʼ ἐξοχήν, and which, as corresponding to the subsequent δευτέρα, He places at the head of the whole series (ἡ μεγάλη κ. πρώτη,) in that of Deuteronomy 6:5,

The Jews are said to have divided the law into “greater and smaller” commandments. Which was of the greatest importance they had not determined. Some held that it was the law respecting sacrifice; others, that respecting circumcision; others, that pertaining to washings and purifying, etc.

The law / torah / instruction. The word “law” has a great variety of significations; it means, commonly, in the Bible, as it does here, “the law given by Moses,” recorded in the first five books of the Bible.

The scribes declared that there were 248 affirmative precepts, as many as the members of the human body; and 365 negative precepts, as many as the days in the year; the total being 613, the number of letters in the Decalogue. Of these they called some light and some heavy. Some thought that the law about the fringes/zitzit on the prayer shawl/garments was the greatest; some that the omission of washings was as bad as murder; some that the third commandment was the greatest. It was in view of this kind of distinction that the scribe asked the question; not as desiring a declaration as to which commandment was greatest, but as wanting to know the principle upon which a commandment was to be regarded as a ‘great’ commandment.

Messiah said the first and greatest commandment is to love God with all one’s heart, soul, mind and strength.

What readers outside of Israel and unfamiliar with Hebrew culture may not have realized is, that even a child knew the answer to the question on what the greatest commandment was.

How did they know?

Because they recited it every day in their morning prayers when they said the Shema.  The daily declaration of faith:

Shema Yisrael Adonai Eloheinu Adonai Echad Baruch Shem Kavod Malchuto L’olam Vaed.

Hear, O Israel, the L-rd is our G‑d, the L-rd is One. Blessed be the name of the glory of His kingdom forever and ever. You shall love the L-rd your G‑d with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your might. And these words which I command you today shall be upon your heart.

This comes from the word of God in Deuteronomy 6

and specifically the biblical text of Deuteronomy 6:4-9, which contains the Shema,

a central confession of faith in Judaism and Christianity.

In the recitation of Deuteronomy 6:4-9, special emphasis is given to the first six Hebrew words of this passage:

Shema Yisrael, Adonai eloheinu, Adonai echad.

The Shema is the core Hebrew affirmation and admonition.

And you shall love את Yahuah your Elohiym,

with all your heart, and with all your soul,

and with all yourself;

and you shall love your neighbor as yourself.

 U’ahavtah את Yahuah Elohayka, v’kole levav’ka, v’kole nefeshka, v’kole meod’ka; v’ahav’ka l’reacha kemo’ka.

The reason they asked Him was because at that time there was amongst others, duly noted above, a big debate among the Pharisees, Scribes, Sadducees, Rabbis and Teachers of the Law, as to whether the greatest commandment meant we were to love God with

all our hearts, soul and might (strength)

or

hearts, soul and will.

To love Him with all our might would mean:

force ourselves to love God with all our hearts and soul, like gritting our teeth and doing it whether we want to or not.

But if we are to say we love Him with our wills, it would mean

we just simply sit back and decide, making a choice to love Him?

The issue is that the word meod could mean either or both.

Deuteronomy 6:5
HEB: נַפְשְׁךָ֖ וּבְכָל־ מְאֹדֶֽךָ׃

3966 meod: Very, exceedingly, much, greatly

Original Word: מְאֹד
Part of Speech: Adjective
Transliteration: m`od
Pronunciation: meh-ODE
Phonetic Spelling: meh-ode’
Definition: Very, exceedingly, much, greatly
Meaning: vehemence, vehemently, wholly, speedily

Derived from an unused root meaning “to vehemence” or “force.”

The Greek equivalent often used in the Septuagint (LXX) for “meod” is “σφόδρα” (sphodra), which also means “very” or “exceedingly.”

The Hebrew word meod, is an adverb, used to intensify the meaning of an adjective or verb. It conveys the sense of very or exceedingly, often used to emphasize the degree or extent of something. In the context of the Hebrew Bible, meod is frequently employed to underscore the intensity of emotions, actions, or characteristics.

In ancient Hebrew culture, language was often used in a vivid and expressive manner. The use of intensifiers like meod reflects a linguistic tradition that values emphasis and clarity. The Hebrew Bible, as a foundational text for Jewish and Christian traditions, uses meod to convey the depth of human experience and divine attributes, highlighting the importance of wholehearted devotion and the magnitude of God’s works.

The Pharisee who asked this question, as we learn in verse 35,  asked it to test Yeshua/Jesus, because as previously mentioned, that even a child knew the answer to the question on what the greatest commandment was; however, the Jewish oral tradition taught by the rabbis referenced something called:

Derech Eretz, which literally means: the way of the land.

Hebrew: תורה עם דרך ארץ – Torah with “the way of the land”,

it’s a common phrase in Rabbinic literature referring to various aspects of one’s interaction with the wider world. A term used to describe proper behavior good manners,

Derech Eretz  teaches respect for all of humanity, including those handicapped, the elderly, and those in need regardless of their race, religion or color. In contemporary Jewish life today, derech eretz, (literally “the way of the land”) means something like good manners or the done thing, proper etiquette, common decency and correct moral behavior.

However, in Messiah’s day the Pharisees taught that

Derech Eretz was equal to the study of Torah.

In the Mishnah in Tractate Avoth 2:2 it declares “Beautiful is the study of Torah with Derech Eretz, an involvement with both makes one forgets sin.”

This Pharisee wanted to test Yeshua to see if He agreed with them.

This is the basic point of their questioning Him.

Here we see the wisdom of Messiah and our Heavenly Father in His reply being aware that they were trying to trick Him.

Yeshua/Jesus knew what was in a person’s mind and didn’t need anyone to tell him what people were like, because He himself knew what was in every person. John 2:25

By the time Yeshua/Jesus was born, Aramaic had been the language of Palestine for centuries; because of this, the vast majority of scholars agree that He spoke almost exclusively in Aramaic, specifically in the Galilean dialect of Aramaic which would have been His native language. Aramaic was the common language in Judea and Galilee during Messiah’s time, and Hebrew, the language of the Bible and the Mishna, was also common among Jews.  While He very likely spoke Aramaic, Hebrew, and Greek, Aramaic was probably the language He spoke the most. The Gospels record Messiah speaking numerous Aramaic words.

When Messiah grew up as a boy in the village of Nazareth, He no doubt attended the synagogue school. The Jewish child was sent to school in the fifth or sixth year of his life. The pupils either “stood, teacher and pupils alike, or else sat on the ground in a semicircle, facing a teacher.” Until the children were ten years of age, the Bible Torah and Tanakh was all they learned. Both rabbinic material and Josephus mention that in the first-century Judaism it was a duty, indeed a religious commandment, that Jewish children be taught Torah.

To learn Torah and to teach it, as it is written

“thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children ”

Deuteronomy 6:7.

The elementary school system among the Jews developed in connection with the synagogue. Even before the days of Yeshua/Jesus, schools for the young were located in practically every important town. Simon ben Shetach (75 b.c.) taught people systematically. He decreed that children should attend elementary school (בֵּת הַסֵּפֶר) the “house of the book.” The Book, of course, was the Torah, with the explanation and oral law. He decreed that children should attend elementary school (בֵּת הַסֵּפֶר) the “house of the book.” The Book, of course, was the Torah, with the explanation and oral law.

When the son reached the age of twelve, the Jews believed his education in the Torah was complete enough to help him know the Law and keep it. He was then known as a “son of the Law. Recall the event of Messiah age twelve, remaining in Jerusalem talking with the Rabbis.

Much of the Torah and the prophets and writings were memorized rather than written or read. However we know Yeshua/Jesus could read Hebrew as He read from the Isaiah scroll. This was not an isolated case as teachers, rabbis and visiting guests regularly read from the Torah Scrolls every Sabbath.

However, the school system did not develop until Joshua ben Gamla (64 CE) the high priest caused public schools to be opened in every town and hamlet for all children above six or seven. The word for education (חִינּוּך) in modern Heb. is derived from the root חָנַכְ, H2852, to train which is used in late Biblical Heb.Train up a child in the way he should go…” (Prov 22:6). Other verbs are used to denote “training,” “instructing” and “learning.” Teaching and learning often took the form of repetition שִׂיחַ֒, H8488.  The scribal school was attached to the Temple and was called the “House of Life.”

In the Mediterranean world in which Yeshua/Jesus lived, children held a different kind of status than they do in our world today. We expect our children to grow into adults and to engage in a life of fulfilled dreams. This was not the case for parents of Messiah’s day because more than half of the children born at this time never reached puberty, they died of diseases and of malnutrition; so when children appear in the Gospels, they usually are used to convey a very important message. For example such is the case in the passage of Mark’s Gospel 10:14.

In their culture, children had the free reign of the family compound. They lived in extended families, brothers lived with their brothers and their wives and their children; the eldest brother or their father was the patriarch. The women lived in one section of the home, usually to the rear where they were not so vulnerable to passers-by. The men lived in another room, usually near the front of the home and were seen as the protectors of their women and children.

The children roamed freely between the two areas and were often used by the adults to discover what was going on in the other rooms. They carried stories back and forth and were the ultimate destroyers of secrecy between the men and between the women as they had access to the whole house; so if anyone wanted to keep a secret, it was necessary to make sure there were no children within earshot. With this in mind, when the disciples tell the children to move away from Yeshua/Jesus, it may not have simply been a matter of giving Him some quiet time. It may have been that they were protecting him from gossip/stories that the children could retell to the adults; however, Yeshua/Jesus in welcoming the children shows that He has no secrets, that His life is open and what He talks about is for everybody who has ears to hear. The story is to show that Messiah offers a special relationship with all men and women including children. He was authentic, trustworthy, and didn’t try to hide His private life, by allowing the children into His life proved that.

Research revels that the first elementary school was probably in Jerusalem with the institution spreading to the urban centers at a later time. Joseph ben Gamala (c. a.d. 65) tried to make elementary education universal and compulsory by endeavoring to make provision for teachers in all provinces and allowing children to enter the school at the age of six or seven. Instruction was given in reading, and the Torah was studied both in its written and oral form. The curriculum in the elementary school was basically the Bible, the Old Testament and the Apocrypha. The Pseudepigrapha was not part of the formal education in school, though it had a widespread circulation. Scientific ideas were embedded incidentally in the Old Testament, this is true also of political ideas. The Old Testament was studied in Hebrew, except for a few passages in Aramaic, notably in Ezra and Daniel. Some apocryphal books were in Greek, but Hebrew continued as the language for scholarly study.

Back to the scripture in question and the four areas that Yeshua/Jesus included in His reply. Matthew only records three: heart, soul and mind.

Matthew 22:37  “Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.”

From the Greek – KJV

both the text In Mark and

Luke both say all 4.

However from the Aramaic, the Peshitta Bible,

Matthew records all four areas:

Matthew 22:37  “Jesus said to him, ‘You shall love THE LORD JEHOVAH your God from all your heart and from all your soul and from all your power/might/strength and from all your mind.’

Messiah was making a direct quote from Deuteronomy 6:5, yet it seems as if He did not quote the passage accurately?  In Deuteronomy 6:5 He says

we are to love the Lord God with all our might,

but in Matthew 22:37 He says

we are to love Him with all our mind.

This seems to point to the fact that

mind and might are two separate things?

The One Who gave the covenant commandments in the first place would not have made such an mistake and it also seems strange that the Scribes and Pharisees who were trying to trap Jesus and knew every letter of the law backwards and forwards, didn’t point it out?

Here is where digging into the Peshitta, the Aramaic Hebrew translations helps to reveal what Yeshua/Jesus did.

The name Peshitta in Aramaic means “Straight”, in other words, the original and pure New Testament.  The Peshitta is the only authentic and pure text which contains the books in the New Testament that were written in Aramaic, the Language of Mshikha (the Messiah) and His Disciples.

This quote follows the Hebrew text of Deut 6:5 and then adds another phrase

and from all your mind.

No OT text has these 4 stipulations as does the peshitta NT

in all three NT quotes of Deut 6:5.

The peshitta OT text does use the unusual word in its final phrase w’minkalah quinak – with all your faculities.

Messiah apparently preferred that the all your mind condition be included in our love to God. Almost all Greek translations leave out all your strength in this verse, but include it in the parallel passages of Mark 12:20 and Luke 10:27. However the critical greek text also leaves out with all your soul in Mark 12:33. (Page58)

Matthew 22:37  the Aramaic Bible shows that He did quote the passage correctly, the only difference being that He added a comment to it to challenge the Pharisees!

In the Greek the word

mind is dianoia

which simply means:

 mind, understanding or imagination.

Yeshua/Jesus, however, was not speaking in Greek, He was speaking in Aramaic and according to the Aramaic Bible what He said was

from your power and your mind.

In this exchange we see

both the mind of Christ

and

the wisdom of the Father in operation.

Yeshua/Jesus answered in his own native language, Aramaic, which meant that He would have had to more clearly define the Hebrew word

meod (strength and/or will).

This word can be stretched to mean:

inner strength or resilience.

The word might

in Hebrew is simply the word

meod

which often used as an adverb to intensify and modify a verb.

The most common rendering for meod is very.

He is very (meodמְאֹד

Strong’s Hebrew: 2430. חֵילָה (cheylah) — Strength, power, force

חֵילָה (cheylah) — Strength, power, force. Word Origin: Derived from the root חָיִל (chayil), which often denotes strength, power, or an army.

Strong’s Hebrew: 360. אֱיָלוּת (eyaluth) — Strength, might …

אֱיָלוּת (eyaluth) — Strength, might, power. Word Origin: Derived from the root אָיִל (ayil), meaning “strength” or “might.”

As mentioned above, in The Lord’s Prayer

ḥaylā translates as power.

Aramaic said: For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory.

If He would have said kayla (strength)

 ḥaylā power, strength; fortitude, endurance

Synonyms: (ḥaylā), (ˁūzā), (ˁušnā) energy…

He would have said that:

you must use your own power to do good works

as loving mankind to show your love for God.

If He would have just said

reina (will)

He would have simply said

you must choose to love God, regardless of Derech Eretz.

Instead, Yeshua/Jesus used both Aramaic words which clearly defined the word

mo’ed

as

the strength of your will.

In other words, in the Hebrew this commandment would read,

“Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart,

with all thy soul and with all the strength of your will.”

Again here Messiah used one of their own sayings on them.

When they wanted to equate oral tradition with the Torah but not place it equal or greater than Torah they say:

“The second is like unto it.”

Here Yeshua/Jesus confirms the importance of Derech Eretz by saying: you shall love your neighbor as yourself,

but without placing it above the commandment to

love the Lord with all your heart, soul and strength of your will.

In reality He did not misspeak Deuteronomy 6:5 He simply translated it into the Aramaic!

But what is strength of the will?

Loving people as we term and understand it, is often hard if we are simply trying to do it in our own strength and base that love on human feelings and emotions; especially when there are problems, conflicts and other desires. In the case when we ‘feel’ we do not love someone, we are to love with meod – the strength of our will. Not by human emotion. but by letting the unconditional love of the Father flow through us to them. There can be times in relationships when love no longer comes naturally or there is abuse in that relationship, however in that case, we must choose to love and sometimes it will take all the strength of our will to love that person.

This is the same with our Heavenly Father. When the battles get tough, the mountains too steep and we cry out to Him and seemingly get no response and we may find it hard to love God in the midst of your struggle can we look up and say: “Father I still love you no matter what happens.”  That is loving Him with all our meod.  We just don’t love the Lord, we choose to love Him and sometimes it takes all the strength of your will to make that choice, just as Messiah clearly pointed out that the second is like the first.  Sometimes we confront a person that we cannot naturally love, but we must make the choice to love and sometimes it takes meod – all the strength of our will, to follow Derech Eretz, respect and love for all mankind.

There is another verse in Isaiah 26:3 where the Hebrew word is translated as Mind  – Yetsar יצר Yod Samek Resh

Isaiah 26:3: “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace,

whose mind is stayed on thee:

because he trust in you.”

Perfect peace is something we all long for

and according to Isaiah 26:3,

we can have it so long as

our minds are stayed on Him,

Isaiah 26:3
HEB: יֵ֣צֶר סָמ֔וּךְ תִּצֹּ֖ר
NAS: The steadfast of mind You will keep
KJV: peace, [whose] mind [is] stayed
INT: of mind the steadfast will keep

 יֵצֶר סָמוּךְ Isaiah 26:3

a steadfast purpose or frame of mind.

The Hebrew word for mind is the word

yetser

which in its very Semitic origins is the word for

imagination.

yetser: Inclination, imagination, mind, purpose, framework

Original Word: יֵצֶר
Part of Speech: Noun Masculine
Transliteration: yetser
Pronunciation: yay’-tser
Phonetic Spelling: yay’-tser
Definition: Inclination, imagination, mind, purpose, framework
Meaning: a form, conception

G1271 (dianoia): Refers to the mind, disposition, or understanding.

– G1761 (enthema): Refers to an inward thought or purpose.

The Hebrew word yetse” primarily refers to the inclination or disposition of the mind and heart. It is often used to describe the inner thoughts and intentions of a person, whether good or evil. In the context of the Bible, yetser can denote the moral and spiritual inclinations that drive human behavior.

In ancient Hebrew thought, the concept of yetser is closely tied to the understanding of human nature and morality. The Hebrews believed that humans possess both

a good inclination (yetser ha-tov)

and an evil inclination (yetser ha-ra).

This duality reflects the ongoing moral struggle within individuals to choose between righteousness and sin. The idea of yetser is foundational in Jewish ethical teachings and is explored extensively in rabbinic literature.

Isaiah 26:3
HEB: יֵ֣צֶר סָמ֔וּךְ תִּצֹּ֖ר שָׁל֣וֹם ׀
NAS: The steadfast of mind You will keep
KJV: [whose] mind [is] stayed [on thee]: because he trusteth
INT: of mind the steadfast will keep perfect

The way we can obtain this shalom/peace, is by

having our minds stayed on Him.

The text reads shalom shalom = double peace – perfect peace!

God will keep us in perfect peace

if (condition)

our imaginations are stayed focused on Him.

The word

stayed is

samuk

 sā·mūḵ, 5564 strongs

סָמַךְ

which is like a covering, overlaid. to lean, lay, rest, support

braced (1), holds (1), laid (6), laid siege (1), lay (17), lean (1), leans (3), relied (1), rested (1), steadfast (1), support (1), sustain (3), sustained (2), sustainer (1), sustains (3), upheld (4), uphold (1).

The Hebrew verb samak primarily means:

to lean upon or to support.

It conveys the idea of resting or relying on something for stability and strength. In the biblical context, it often refers to physical support, such as leaning on a staff, or metaphorical support, such as relying on God or His promises.

In ancient Near Eastern cultures, the concept of leaning or supporting was significant in both physical and spiritual contexts. Shepherds would lean on their staffs for support, and elders would lean on their wisdom and experience. Spiritually, the Israelites were encouraged to lean on the Lord God, trusting in His strength and guidance rather than their own understanding or the power of foreign nations.

When our imaginations cover our Heavenly Father, His peace will become our peace. His imaginations will become our imaginations.

How do you keep your mind stayed on God?

He is showing Himself all around us in the nature He created and part of every environment we may find ourselves in. Many times we just don’t understand that He is there; wanting to show us and teach us from every tiny flower and bird, to the huge energy of the sun and the entire starry universe. It really is so easy to keep our minds stayed on our Heavenly Father, if we will just stop and let Him reveal Himself to us.

The word strength and power

are basically the same word from the same root –

chayl/chayil.

In the Hebrew and Aramaic it means

to tremble or shake.

It comes from an Akkadian word chalu

which is a word used for:

a woman in labor, giving birth to a child.

Ephesians 6:10: Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.

In Greek the word for strength or strong is

endynamousthe

from the root

en donamoo

where we are familiar with the reference to dynamite. It can mean power and might.  In this context, it is to grow stronger.

The Greek word for

power is

kratel

which is might, strength and power

and has the idea of establishing dominion.

The word

might is ischyos

from the root is which is:

a force to overcome immediate resistance.

The Greek does read well as Paul is exhorting us to become strong in the ability of God to establish dominion over an immediate problem or attack.

So now we know why they asked Yeshua/Jesus this question and…

that the inclination or disposition of the mind and heart is important and…

that we are to

love your neighbor as yourself but without placing it above the commandment to love the Lord with all our heart, soul and strength of our will.

And God will keep us in perfect peace

if

our imaginations/minds are stayed focused on Him.

Shalom, shalom mishpachah/family

and cheverim/friends!

It’s all about Life and Relationship,

NOT Religion.

You are greatly loved and precious in His sight.

NOT SURE?

YOU CAN BE..

SAY THE FOLLOWING FROM YOUR HEART RIGHT NOW…

Heavenly Father I come to you in the Name of Jesus/Yeshua asking for forgiveness of my sins for which I am truly sorry. I repent of them all and turn away from my past.

I believe with my heart and confess with my mouth that Jesus/Yeshua is your Son and that He died on the cross at calvary to pay the price for my sin, so that I might be forgiven and have eternal life in the kingdom of Heaven. Father I believe that Jesus/Yeshua rose from the dead and I ask you to come into my life right now and be my personal Savior and Lord and I will worship you all the days of my life. Because your word is truth I say that I am now forgiven and born again and by faith I am washed clean with the blood of Jesus/Yeshua. Thank you that you have accepted me into your family in Jesus’/Yeshua’s name. Amen.

Bringing Forth Treasures Old and New – Part 2

We were looking at the actIONs of the apostles and the attributes noted in the scriptures which identified them as: little christs/christians/disciples/apostles.

These are words that should also describe us, and be evident in our lives for the world to see as we follow Messiah Yeshua/Jesus.

obedience

grace

power

boldness

and

glory.

Resuming at

Grace which

we understand as His favor.

Strong’s Hebrew: 2580. חֵן (chen) — favor, grace

Phonetic Spelling: (khane) חֵן

favor, gracious, pleasant, precious, well-favored From chanan; graciousness, i.e. Subjective (kindness, favor) or objective (beauty) — favour, grace(-ious), pleasant, precious, (well-)favoured.

In Hebrew, chet or chen,

also the place of His presence.

Chet/Chen is represented by the fence and describes a protected garden (Eden), private place, an inner room or a sanctuary…

Recall the pictograph depicting grace as a place, the place of our hiding and the womb where we are conceived and develop before birth. We are in His grace now also and in ‘a womb’ waiting to be reborn into a new resurrected glorified body; then we know we shall be like Him.

The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: 17And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together. 18For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.
19For the earnest expectation of the creature waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God.
20For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who hath subjected the same in hope, 21Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.
22For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now.
Romans 8:19

Beloved, now we are children of God, and it has not appeared as yet what we shall be. We know that, when He appears, we shall be like Him, because we shall see Him just as He is. 1John 3:2

And we will become aware of a new desire in our hearts placed there by our Fathers’ Spirit.

A new direction maybe?

New instructions?

New Fire for His Word?

and the Lord He gives the increase.

Hearing about Him is insufficient.

Reading about Him is not enough.

Thinking we know is not fullness.

We have to be doers,

this is ACTions of the sent ones.

Not readers, talkers and thinkers, but doers of His word.

Just reading will not benefit, especially speed reading! We have to take it in, like real food, chew it and digest it for it to give any benefit of its’ nutrients into our bodies; both physical and spiritual.

We are told to Consider Our Ways in Haggai 1:5-7

Not Make Excuses.

The people were saying, and giving reasons not to act.

The time has not come, even the time for the house of the Lord to be rebuilt ” (Haggai 1:2).

We Must Get Our Priorities in Order.

The people said that it was not time to rebuild the temple

(Haggai 1:2). …

Remember Our Dependence Upon God. …

Obey the Word of God… Not what people are saying!

5 Now therefore thus saith the Lord of hosts; Consider your ways. 6 Ye have sown much, and bring in little; ye eat, but ye have not enough; ye drink, but ye are not filled with drink; ye clothe you, but there is none warm; and he that earneth wages earneth wages to put it into a bag with holes. 7 Thus saith the Lord of hosts;Consider your ways.

Acts 5:36 and 2:39

The CALL is by His spirit and we have the choice to accept or refuse it.

By doing nothing we have refused and usually go on to live a life just like our peers saying to ourselves, ‘this is Gods’ plan for me’…is it because its an easier more comfortable and familiar way?? Four decades ago our Heavenly Fathers’ call came to this life and the message He gave for this servant to share has not changed… Repent… Turn around …come out from the world be saved, delivered, healed, filled with His spirit and make disciples; teaching them to do the same.

Strong’s Hebrew: 7121. קָרָא (qara) — to call, proclaim, read

Imagine, if we, all of our generation had done this, just think how many would be in the Kingdom today…but we always think it’s someone else’s job… we just want to live a nice, comfortable life….BUT… It’s not too late, we have today to share freely what we freely received.

The mission field of a ready harvest is right where you are…

We are not man appointed (vs. 38, 39) and if it’s not by His Spirit, it will fail.

The anointing of His spirit of holiness

by His grace brings the power

manifest through boldness

to witness and to DO

what God has called us to do in His Word.

Obedience in the name of Yeshua/Jesus and by His power we work the works of Him who sent us Yeshua/Jesus.

And by His power to destroy the works of the devil… this is what the power is for and why He came.

1 John 3:8 For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.

Acts 4:13 Holy BOLDNESS it was obvious they’d been with Yeshua/Jesus…. do people see that in us?

5:29 Obey God rather than man OBEDIENCE

29 But Peter and the other apostles answered and said: “We ought to obey God rather than men.

Then Peter . . . answered.

1 that God must be obeyed rather than earthly rulers;

2 God raised up Jesus whom they hanged on the cross;

3 exalted him to his right hand;

4 to be a Prince and Savior, to grant Israel the opportunity to repent, and to obtain forgiveness;

5 that they were witnesses of these facts, and so was the Holy Spirit.

To Hear and Obey

are the essence of the

shema

with which they were all familiar.

6:6,7 Brought INCREASE and BLESSING 6 whom they set before the apostles; and when they had prayed, they laid hands on them. 7 Then the word of God spread, and the number of the disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests were obedient to the faith.

6:10 7 And the word of God increased; and the number of the disciples multiplied in Jerusalem greatly; and a great company of the priests were obedient to the faith. 8 And Stephen, full of faith and power, did great wonders and miracles among the people. 9 Then there arose certain of the synagogue, which is called the synagogue of the Libertines, and Cyrenians, and Alexandrians, and of them of Cilicia and of Asia, disputing with Stephen 10And they were not able to resist the wisdom and the spirit by which he spake.

the POWER of His Spirit of Holiness is IRRESISTIBLE brings anointing /POWER

BOLDNESS attracts GLORY/anointing.

Prov. 28:1+12

The Boldness of the Righteous.

1 The ungodly man flees when no one pursues: but the righteous is confident as a lion

The righteous are bold as lions.

וְ֝צַדִּיקִ֗ים but the righteous wə·ṣad·dî·qîm

כִּכְפִ֥יר as a lion kiḵ·p̄îr

יִבְטָֽח are bold yiḇ·ṭāḥ.

Proverbs 28:1 doesn’t have in mind that kind of boldness when it says the righteous have it and the wicked don’t. The boldness here is the boldness required for a just/righteous cause. What is it about the wicked that makes them so often flee (in the presence of justice) when no one is pursuing?

Could it be that..

When the righteous

Because of the anointing

Strong’s Hebrew: 4886. מָשַׁח (mashach) — to smear, anoint

מְשִׁיחָה. More Hebrew words for anointing. noun מְשִׁיחָה. unction, band, cord, strand, thread

The high priest’s anointment is otherwise designated by the verb kadesh ( qaddesh; “to sanctify”). Indeed, the anointment “sanctifies” the high priest by removing him from the realm of the profane and empowering him to operate in the realm of the sacred, i.e., to handle the holy items.

Thus the Hebrew word mâshach that means to rub with oil also, by implication, means to consecrate. Mâshîyach (a derivative) is translated into the English adjective ‘anointed’ and thus means a consecrated person or thing.

Anointing stands for greatness (Sifre, Num. 117; Yer. Bik. ii. 64 d ): consequently, “Touch not mine anointed” signifies “my great ones.” All the vessels of the tabernacle, also, were consecrated with the sacred oil for all time to come (Num. R. xii.).

Strong’s Greek: 5545. χρῖσμα (chrisma) — an anointing, unction

From chrio; an unguent or smearing, i.e. (figuratively) the special endowment (“chrism”) of the Holy Spirit — anointing, unction.

The sick were healed, miracles were wrought, demons cast out…

Boldness with great power and grace and obedience

they were told to leave serving tables and give themselves to prayer.

We too must put the Word first place!

Josh 1:8 This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.

Acts 6:4 4 But we will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry of the word.

1 And in those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplied, there arose a murmuring of the Grecians against the Hebrews, because their widows were neglected in the daily ministration. 2 Then the twelve called the multitude of the disciples unto them, and said, It is not reason that we should leave the word of God, and serve tables.

Our Heavenly Father has a due time and season.

Be ready to do, or to stop doing, that which He is telling you.

Be open to change, to move on and serve in a deeper way.

Be a doer of His Word – not a hearer only…

We need this same anointing now and its as available to us today as it was 2000+ years ago.

WHY?

It’s to work the works of Yeshua/Jesus and by so doing, destroy the works of the devil; which is why He came.

All we have to do is ask and receive

Shavuot 2 x 3000 = A Marriage Made in Heaven – Conclusion

According to the scriptures, at the Beginning when God’s relationship with His creation was broken through disobedience/sin, He had to send them out of His presence. However He was already working on the plan of redemption and restoration, which was declared in Genesis, the book of Beginnings.

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Berashit bara Elohim ET את Ha Shamayim V’ET ואת Ha Aretz.

When Jesus/Yeshua said “I am the Alpha and the Omega” Greek (Alef Tav את in Hebrew/Aramaic) (Rev.22:13), He was possibly meaning much more than just that.

Was He saying He was there in the beginning?

(This can be said to be true, if we believe that He said, If you have seen Me you have seen the Father and I and My Father are One.)

NAIL I AM

Continued from Part 1:

Before The Lord/Adonai could fulfill the promise of a Redeemer, He made various covenants with people of faith including Noah, Abraham and Moses. Each time His people chose to worship/serve other gods and betrayed their relationship with Him.

Often described in scripture terms as equal to adultery committed in a marriage covenant relationship.

Each time it did not end well and their enemies conquered them, exile and captivity ensued. After the years of bondage and slavery in Egypt He answered their cry and prepared Moses to lead them to freedom where He wanted to bring them into a stronger covenant relationship; which was the equivalent, in mutual commitment, to a covenant of marriage.

This was completed at Sinai.

This legal agreement enabled Adonai to instruct the building of the Ark for His presence to dwell with them and fulfill His part of the covenant in many ways.

After generations of living in the promised land, Israel was again unfaithful to their commitment and again enemies conquered and led them captive. Adonai was waiting to fulfill the promise of a re-new-ed covenant; a better one that would not require continual animal sacrifices of blood to atone for sin. It could be said in other words that He wanted a fresh start and to re-marry Israel.

However from the original decrees, the only way for an individual to remarry was if a spouse died. So to betroth Himself once again to His people, the redemptive plan was that He came and died and then made the new covenant in His own blood, so that once and for all time it would pay the required price for sin. According to scripture, we are part of His espoused bride-to-be; we are in covenant with Him and engaged to Him, waiting on the return of our bridegroom, to complete His purpose and reunite us with Him.

Shavuot 2 x 3000 = A Marriage made in Heaven – Our God is a consuming fire. Conclusion and connections:

We too have been set free and received salvation to serve Him, to follow Him to embrace His Word, His Will, His Way and in our submission to His will, we become part of His purposes and plans. To receive His salvation and then continue to live our own lives, our way, is tantamount to a child receiving a gift in return for the promise of doing a task; who then takes the gift but never fulfills the promise of the commitment they made in agreeing to do their part.

The Hebrew understanding of Believe is that of change. Although repentance basically means to change your mind; it means to turn around and head the opposite direction. We are to be not only hearers but doers also.

The fire of God brings cleansing. Malachi tells us it’s a spirit of burning. Why do we need it? Because in Jeremiah 17:9 the word says

I the LORD search the heart, I test the mind, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.

This fire of judgment in the re-new-ed covenant is to burn away all that will stand between us and His continuing Presence.

Those who have walked through the fire leave sparks of light everywhere they go.

The Holy Spirit creates the passion of God in our hearts. After the two traveling disciples talk with the resurrected Jesus, they describe their hearts as “burning within us” (Luke 24:32).

After the disciples receive the Ruach/Spirit at Shavuot/Pentecost, they have a passion that lasts a lifetime and compels them to speak the word of God boldly (Acts 4:31). Even unto death, as all except John were killed.

As we invite Him, to sit with us, (spiritually speaking), and open the scriptures to us. As we read His word, our hearts will burn within us.

The prophet Malachi 3:1-6 wrote that the Lord would send His messenger of the covenant, and asks who will be able to stand, to endure in that day, … He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

For He is like a refiner’s fire and … by the ministry of His Word and the convictions of His Spirit/Ruach..

For He will be like a refiner’s fire or a launderer’s soap. … It says in Malachi 4:5, … “If by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body you will live.”

Like a refiner’s fire, which separates the precious metal from the refuse.

So according to Malachi, God will begin refining us with fire, … the Spirit of God is in us, refining us, this is what the fire of Pentecost is and does for us. Many refer to it as baptism in the Holy Spirit.

There are several main parallels between the 2 events:

One parallel is fire. At both Shavuots, fire was present. At Mt. Sinai, we are told that God Himself descended as fire. He was the fire that engulfed the mountain. In the Upper Room, He was in ‘tongues of fire’ descending upon the disciples.

We can deduce from the texts that if He descended on the mountain as fire, it’s a safe conclusion that He was also the fire that descended on the disciples in the Upper Room.

A common misconception is that until that day, the Holy Spirit was not present in the world. Yet we read at various places in the Bible where it is clearly stated that the Spirit of God was present before the outpouring at Shavuot.

Some of these instances, include the creation of the world (and specifically the creation of man), the Psalms consistently declaring the praises and wonders of His Spirit, and references in Haggai, Nehemiah, Zechariah, and Isaiah that the Spirit of God taught and directed Israel.

In addition, the Spirit of the Lord filled the people with the knowledge of how to build the Temple and its furnishings. The Spirit instructed Moses how and whom to appoint as the 70 elders. Joseph, Joshua, Saul, David, the Judges of Israel, and the prophets of Adonai are all said to have had the Spirit of God upon them. These are just a few, of the many examples, to show how extensively the Holy Spirit of God was present in the world before the Upper Room.

Fire is also a commonality because it is typically related to cleansing and judgment.

Think of all the times we see fire used as a tool of God.

Is it possible these times were also instances of the Holy Spirit of God? What does it tell us about the connection between judgment, His Spirit, and cleansing/purification?

Another parallel is that, in both cases, after the Spirit of God appeared, He then presents His people with the Torah/Teaching/Instruction/Scripture. Holy Spirit was present at Sinai and Shavuot filling the people with knowledge.

At Mt. Sinai the Torah was given twice on stone tablets through Moses. In the Upper Room, the Torah was written on the hearts of believers directly through His Spirit.

Deuteronomy 31:16-21

Here these verses indicate that God knew the covenant written on stone tablets would be broken. He knew before they ever sinned against Him that their necks would be stiff and their hearts would be hard.

However, God also foretold of a time when He would renew this covenant with His people and would write His Torah on their hearts.

“See, the days are coming,” declares The Lord, “when I shall make a renewed covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah, … I shall put My Torah in their inward parts, and write it on their hearts. And I shall be their Elohim, and they shall be My people. Jeremiah 31:31-34

Adonai says that He is going to make a new – or renewed – covenant with the House of Israel. Notice, however, that the Lord’s new covenant still involves Torah. The new covenant that we as believers are part of still requires us to guard and observe God’s Word/ Torah/Teaching/Instruction/Scripture.

It is common doctrine in today’s churches that Christians no longer have to keep ‘Torah’ as part of the new covenant under grace. But clearly, it seems The Lord never actually said that. He tells us that He intends to release His people from their captivity (of sin) and that He would then write His Torah in our inward parts and on our hearts. Why would He do that if it was no longer pertinent to salvation and relationship with Him?

He is essentially saying that He will make Torah a part of us; that it will be so precious to us and so inseparable from our lives that it actually becomes part of our makeup; and that we can never be separated from His Torah/Teaching/Instruction/Scripture.

Hence the Word was made flesh and lived among us. He is the Living Word the Bread from the Heavens, The Bread of Life. In the beginning was the Word….. John 1:1

Messiah Jesus/Yeshua told us to ‘Eat My Flesh’ meaning to take Him into ourselves. He is our daily Manna. We are to chew, ponder/think on and digest/absorb Him/His Words.

Tradition has it that when the Torah was given on Mt. Sinai, it was given in 70 different languages.

Perhaps this is also a foreshadowing of the division at Tower of Babel into 70 languages and of the captivity in many nations which Israel would find herself in generations later? Is it because of this captivity foretold by The Lord that it became necessary for the disciples to speak in many languages? Jesus/Yeshua had to send the disciples out to the nations because that is where the captives of Israel were! This is why it so important to believe that we are part of Israel…just as Ruth did.

Then He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures… just as He did in Emmaus. Saying that repentance and forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in His Name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. And you are witnesses of these matters. And see, I am sending the Promise of My Father upon you, but you are to remain in the city of Jerusalem until you are clothed with power from on high. Luke 24:44-49

Malachi called prophetically for the WAY to be Prepared

One more connection that now makes sense, is with John who in his call to repentance, makes us aware of our need for a Savior. Scripture refers to this again when it states that Mark says that “John came, baptizing in the desert region and preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.” Mark goes on to say that “this was his message: ‘After me will come one more powerful than I, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.’” (Mark 1:4,7,8)

Usually when we think of the call for us to repent, we think that it means that we are to be sorry for our sins. But this is not repentance. It is choosing to turn away from our sinful ways and head in a different direction. And this is precisely what John the Baptist called for the people of his day, and also calls for us, to do.

The Israelites passing through the Reed/Red sea was the prophetic shadow of being immersed by water baptism.

John is telling us of the need we have. He is reminding us that we like to head off in wicked, (out of harmony with God’s), directions and down other trails, like Emmaus roads and the one back to Egypt. He is sharing with us our need to repent. He is preparing us and our hearts for Messiah Jesus by reminding us of our spiritual situation.

John isn’t giving us the answer to the problem, he is just reminding us of the problem. He is reminding us that we are sinful beings, in need of a Savior. John’s message prepares us for Messiah Jesus’ message, then He enters the scene and meets the needs that John has reminded us we have.

Messiah Jesus/Yeshua, through His incarnation, through His life and teaching, through His death and resurrection, offers us the path to true repentance. Messiah’s death and resurrection doesn’t make sense if you don’t understand our need for it as John shares it. John’s call to repentance is impossible to truly follow if we don’t have Messiah Jesus to live that out for us and sacrifice Himself for us.

Acts 2: 1-8, 12-21, 37-41

And when the Day of the Festival or Feast of Weeks, [Shavuot], Pentecost had come, they were all with one mind in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from the heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.

And there appeared to them divided*tongues, as of fire, and settled on each one of them.

And they were all filled with the Set-apart Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them to speak.

Now in Jerusalem there were dwelling Jews, dedicated men from every nation under the heaven. And when this sound came to be, the crowd came together, and were confused, because everyone heard them speak in his own language. And they were all amazed and marveled, saying to each other, “Look, are not all these who speak Galileans? And how do we hear, each one in our own language in which we were born?”

*(Divided tongues was with reference to clean /unclean animals so more than likely this was a sign to confirm to them that it was a kosher spirit of holiness.)

And Peter said to them, “Repent, and let each one of you be immersed in the Name of Yeshua Messiah for the forgiveness of sins. And you shall receive the gift of the Set-apart Spirit. (The Ecclesia the called out ones the congregation of believers in Jesus, Messiah Yeshua.) For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are far off, as many as The Lord God our Elohim shall call.” And with many other words he earnestly witnessed and urged them, saying, “Be saved from this crooked generation.” Then those, indeed, who gladly received his word, were immersed. And on that day about 3000 beings were added to them.

Back to Malachi 3 again.  It begins by talking about a messenger who will prepare the way but then it tells us that, “suddenly the Lord you are seeking will come to his temple; the messenger of the covenant, whom you desire, will come.” This is a different messenger.

This messenger of the covenant is Messiah Himself. And His coming isn’t necessarily going to be the wonderful thing that we all look forward to. Let us continue in Malachi, “who can endure the day of His coming? Who can stand when He appears? For he will be like a refiner’s fire or a launderer’s soap. He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver.”

It doesn’t sound like the most comfortable process! And yet this is what we are told that Jesus is and does for us. Again, this only becomes the good thing that it is when we accept John the Baptist’s message that tells us of our need to repent. Moreover when we do repent, when we do turn ourselves over to Jesus, we discover that He is a launderer’s soap, that He is a refiner’s fire. And for a brief time this whole Discipleship life doesn’t seem like the most wonderful thing we imagine. However without our enduring some heat how could there be refining fires? Many do not make it…

Some people are lost in the flames of the fire and some are built from it.

This refiner’s fire: Not only is Jesus the refiner’s fire, He went through it Himself. The refiner’s fire that Jesus puts us through; He went through it and suffered and died for our sake so that we would not have to deal with the flames. In becoming the type of the sacrificial red heifer that was burned, Jesus took that fire upon Himself, though He did not have to, and Jesus offers us salvation from our sins because of what He did.

He then tells us that if we truly want to follow Him, we are going to have to go where He leads? Jesus doesn’t promise us complete prosperity and ease of life. What Jesus does promise, is a life that will have suffering in it, a life that will have difficulty, a life of pain and trouble, but a life that is good. He offers us a chance to follow Him, but He tells us that this will be like sending us through a refining fire, like brushing us with a hard soap.

We need to realize that the difficulty, the fire, the soap will not be there to destroy us or to hurt us. It will be there to make us stronger, to help us grow closer to Him. If we pay attention to the message of John the Baptist, we realize our need for Jesus. If we accept John’s words we acknowledge our need for refining. And when Jesus comes and offers us a life of following Him we discover that though this life may be hard, it is the most wonderful thing we can do to follow Him.

By the spirit of judgment, and by the spirit of burning.–The word for “spirit” Ruach, is better understood in its more literal meaning, as breath or blast, as in Isaiah 30:27-28; Isaiah 40:7.

The word for wind, breath or blast (same as, breath of life God breathed into Adam.)

(Psalm 18:15 Then the channels of waters were seen, and the foundations of the … by the breath of his nostrils. Exodus 15:8,10 And with the blast of your nostrils the waters were gathered together. Ex 14:21 And Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; and the LORD caused the sea to go back by a strong east wind all that night, and made the sea dry land, and the waters were divided.

God opens the sea with a blast of His nostrils!

‘There went up a smoke out of His nostrils, and fire out of His mouth devoured: coals were kindled by it.’

2 Sam 22:14-16 The Lord thundered from heaven, and the Most High uttered His voice. 15 He sent out arrows and scattered them; lightning confused and troubled them. 16 The channels of the sea were visible, the foundations of the world were uncovered at the rebuke of the Lord, at the blast of the breath of His nostrils.

Fire and Wind together.

Ruach has another meaning it also means the Spirit. In Hebrew Holy Spirit is the Holy Wind/Holy Breath. And just like trying to press against the wind, it gets harder, for it creates drag and we get tired when we walk against the spirit. He creates a drag on our lives.

Because the Spirit of God is Holy, it blows in the direction of the Holy and against the direction of the unholy. Consequently, when you turn around and walk back the same way you came, you are walking in the direction the wind is blowing, so the wind actually helped you walk. Similarly, if we turn around, change our course, if we repent, the drag will disappear. Then the spirit will empower us and we will move forward much easier, as the Holy Spirit of God will always be at our backs. The wind is always at our back. He is our rearguard.

A big measure of Holy fire comes in the baptism.

Matthew 3:11-12  …He [Jesus] will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire … gathering his wheat into the barn and burning up the chaff with unquenchable fire.

Matthew 3:11 also indicates that the baptism with the Spirit will have the effect of burning out the chaff. So again, this Holy Spirit fire also has a beneficial cleansing effect in our lives.

The more the wind of the spirit blows, the hotter the fire burns.

The Holy Ghost baptism is an impartation of Spirit-fire! When the 120 were baptized in the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, the tongues of fire that appeared upon them was further evidence of this being an impartation of Holy Ghost fire.

The purpose of this Holy fire, of this Godly passion, is expression.

But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. Acts 1:8

It must not, it “cannot”, be held in.

The prophet experienced an inner pressure to speak, to declare, to express the name of God and the word of God.  The bottled-up word of God was “like a fire”inside him, and he could not hold it in.

Jeremiah 20:8-9  …if I say, “I will not mention him or speak any more in his name, his word is in my heart like a fire, a fire shut up in my bones. I am weary of holding it in; indeed, I cannot.”

If you bottle up fire, pretty soon it dies out, no oxygen, no breath of life. So open up!  Speak out His word from within you. Two things will happen: (1) the fire will touch others; and (2) God will feed and increase the fire within you.

Live a life of spiritual readiness.

Tend your inner fire, keep it burning.

Otherwise, it will fade out and end up being only faintly glowing embers.

Treasure the Holy Spirits anointing… stir it up.

Fix your eyes on Jesus. Let Him talk to you and open His Word to you.

Share the fire, express it, give it out, speak up.

Do these things, and God will keep His holy fire burning within you. And you will find yourself continually bearing fruit for Him, both in your own life and in the lives of others.

In the waiting in Jerusalem their strength was to sit still they had to be patient. Patience undergirds faith, for it is the basic building block of faith, an absolute necessity in the foundation and life of every believer in order to really and fully know God.

Here is a reason for the days of the Omer. The disciples were not sitting around doing nothing, they were spending their days immersed in the Word of God/Torah.

Following God’s directions, according to the annual Appointed Times. To be at the right place at the right time at the conclusion of the Omer. The 50 days the time of preparation making ready to receive Holy spirit.

After meeting with Jesus, the two on the Road to Emmaus were turned back to where they had been told to wait. He had said, wait here in Jerusalem, they chose to leave and go another road.

Temptations of the flesh (‘carnal christianity’) Do we do it OUR WAY, when faced with:

Despair – do we just give up?

Precipitancy – Do we do something to stir ourselves – ‘we’ must be doing, ‘we’ must do it?

Presumption – Expect a miracle march into the sea asking God to bless ‘our’ going?

Or Cowardice – the world’s WAY – Retreat – go back to the worlds WAY of action and what we were familiar with.

Or THE WAY/HIS WAY – Wait on the Lord, which is the posture of an upright man/of righteousness. Ex 14:13 Stand still and see the salvation of the Lord.

The fire of God came to them in person and opened their eyes, when He opens your eyes, no man come close them. In which direction are we traveling on the Emmaus Road?

Are we on the Emmaus Road A-WAY from Jerusalem or on THE-WAY to meet with Him and be empowered?

Let’s make sure we are headed for the place He told us to be. The place where He will meet with us and impart to us all that we need, to be His disciple and to fulfill our call.

Another parallel is that, in both cases, after the Spirit of Adonai appeared, there was redemption and restoration; which we learned from the story of Ruth and Boaz.

And in a final parallel:

it can be seen in both of these examples of Shavuot, that we are the first-fruits being offered to The Lord/Adonai. It is a time of the giving of the harvest. We are the harvest that is being offered. But we cannot bear fruit if we are not first connected to the Vine.

“I am the true vine, and My Father is the gardener. Every branch in Me that bears no fruit He takes away. And every branch that bears fruit He prunes, so that it bears more fruit. You are already clean because of the Word which I have spoken to you. Stay in Me, and I stay in you. As the branch is unable to bear fruit of itself, unless it stays in the vine, so neither you, unless you stay in Me. I am the vine, you are the branches. He who stays in Me, and I in him, he bears much fruit. Because without Me you are able to do naught! If you guard My commands, you shall stay in My love, even as I have guarded My Father’s commands and stay in His love.” John 15:1-5, 10

The Holy Spirit /Ruach haKodesh, has always played an important role in Shavuot and, as seen from these examples, Holy Spirit /Ruach haKodesh is an integral part of the covenant between Most High God/El Elyon and Israel.

Once we allow the fire of Adonai to cleanse, judge, and declare us purified, only then are we able to receive the Torah of Adonai that keeps us from sin and allows us to draw near to El Elyon. It is El Elyon’s desire that we love and guard His Torah to such a degree that it becomes inextricable from our very being.

Torah becomes who we are; it becomes the very essence of our being.

Once we hear and receive this message of Torah and redemption in our own language, then we become the ‘redeemed of Israel’ and are restored to our rightful place under the covering of the Most High God –El Elyon! It is only then that we can offer ourselves as first-fruits to Adonai to serve in His Kingdom and to declare the Good News: that the captives of Israel have been freed by the power and blood of Yeshua haMashiach – Yeshua the Messiah!

Offering ourselves to the Lord/Adonai is the ultimate gift of love we can offer Him. “No one has greater love than this: that he would lay down his life for his friends.” By giving Him our lives, our hopes, our fears, and everything that we will ever become, we are saying “I choose you. I choose all that You are and all that You have for me. You will never cease to be more than enough for me; You are all I will ever need or desire. I choose to love You and obey You. I choose to lay down my life for You.”

This “sacrifice” becomes our wedding vow to our King. And that is the real love story of Shavuot.

At the beginning of His ministry He met with John the Baptist and He was baptized even though He had nothing to repent for.

And at the end of His ministry He died the death of a criminal though He had done no criminal act.

This is the real message of Shavuot:

No one has greater love than this — that he should lay down his life for his friend.

It is the love story between The Lord/Adonai and Israel.

In examining the parallels between the first Shavuot that occurred at Mt. Sinai and the Shavuot that took place in Jerusalem in the Upper Room.

Both of these events have to do with a marriage.

The law has to do with Israel being married to the Lord (the Torah functions as a ketubah, a marriage contract between Jehovah and Israel, just as the New Covenant does for the Church, the bride of Christ).

For this reason,  it is traditional for the book of Ruth to be read in the synagogue every year during this festival. Wouldn’t it be just like the Lord to call His bride home on such a special day as this? If not this year, maybe next…. One thing is certain.. He will fulfill His Word and Keep His Promises.

3000 died and 3000 lived… both were ‘marriage covenants’.

The fulfillment of ours with Him will be in the Heavens/Ha Shamayim.Revelation 19:7,  “Let us rejoice and be glad and give him glory! For the wedding of the Lamb has come and his bride has made herself ready.

For the spirit and the bride say come! Rev. 22:7

2 x 3000 = a marriage made in the Heavens!

Miracles On a Z String

As this subject has so many wonderful facets to it, pondering on the details of 2 familiar stories will help us to gain deeper insights and enlarge our understanding of things we thought we knew and really didn’t fully appreciate.

(Continued from last post Life On The Fringe.)

Mark 5 tells the story of the woman with the issue of blood. Here we find the scripture about touching the hem of His garment, which was the tzizit/tsitsit of His tallit. The Scriptures refer to tzizit / tsitsit because, the Jewish translators who translated the Hebrew Scriptures into Greek, use the Greek word kraspedon for tzizit / tsitsit and kraspedon is used in the Gospels where tzizit / tsitsit would be appropriate.

The action in this story was not an isolated incident just for the woman with the issue of blood and is only part of the picture.Wherever He entered, into villages, cities, or the country, they laid their sick in the marketplaces and begged Him that they might just touch the border of His garment.

And as many as touched Him were made whole. (Mark 6:56)..and why so many sought to touch the tzizit/tsitsit of His tallit and begged Him that they might only touch the hem of His garment. And as many as touched it were made perfectly well. Matthew 14:26

In Numbers (Bamidbar) 15:37-41; The children of Israel were instructed by God to wear fringes (tzi-tzit) which were put on the hem of their garments to remind the people of the Torah/God’s Word.

When the woman with the issue of blood, (by the law, she was unclean), came to Yeshua, (the High Priest of God), to touch the hem (tzi-tzit) of His garment and be healed (Matt. [Mattityahu] 9:20-22);it was a picture given to us by God, to communicate to us, that she believed Yeshua’s word by faith, (emunah) and was made well because of that faith. The concept of the blue tassel on the fringe, spoke directly to Israel of Messiah’s power and authority.

That is why the woman touched the fringe of Messiahs garment, she wanted to touch the symbol of His authority.

“Just then a woman who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak.  She said to herself, ‘If I only touch his cloak, I will be healed.’”  (Matthew 9:20–21) and … came from behind and touched the border of His garment and immediately her flow of blood stopped. Luke 8:44

The Jewish New Testament Commentary explains about this passage:

“A woman who had . . . a hemorrhage approached him from behind and . . . touched his tzitzit. (Fringe of His prayer shawl) She was in a state of ritual impurity because of her hemorrhage. She touched the holiest part of Yeshua’s garment. No wonder she approached from behind, she was afraid; this is also why she hesitated to answer Yeshua’s question, “Who touched my clothes?” (Mark 5:29-33) For normally the impure defiles the pure (see Haggai 2:11-13; also the Talmud, Toharot.)

But in this case, the opposite happened:

the purity of Yeshua the Messiah and of His tzitziyot (“tassels,” or “fringes, of Yeshua’s prayer shawl.”) remained uncompromised, while instead the cause of the woman’s impurity was instantly removed. In the following incident, the raising of Jairus daughter, this principle is exemplified even more strongly, since Yeshua himself initiates contact with what is regarded in Judaism as the primary source of all impurity, a body (v.25) . . .” (comment on Matthew 9:20).

The New Testament contains the teachings and life and times of the Messiah, but we should remember that the Old Testament law was still in effect until His atoning death, resurrection and ascension.

When the veil of the temple was rent in two, it symbolized that the sacrifice of His life gave us access to enter into the presence of God. Messiah Himself, was born under the Law. The scriptures tell us it was His custom to go to the synagogue. Many times Messiah Jesus/Yeshua haMashiach would quote from the Law, but He would also expound upon the spirit of the Law and here Leviticus 15:19-28, applied.

The law on this matter meant that she was unclean and this created a huge problem.

“And if a woman have an issue, and her issue in her flesh be blood, she shall be put apart seven days: and whosoever toucheth her shall be unclean until the even. And everything that she lieth upon in her separation shall be unclean. everything also that she sitteth upon shall be unclean. And whosoever toucheth her bed shall wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and be unclean until the even. And whosoever toucheth any thing that she sat upon shall wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water; and be unclean until even. And if it be on her bed, or on anything whereon she sitteth, when he toucheth it, he shall be unclean until the even … And if a woman have an issue other blood many days out of the time other separation, or if it run beyond the time of her separation; all the days of the issue of her uncleanness shall be as the days of her separation: she shall be unclean …. But if she be cleansed of her issue, then she shall number to herself seven days, and after that she shall be clean. And on the eighth day she shall take unto her two turtles, or two young pigeons, and bring them unto the priest, to the door of the tabernacle of the congregation. And the priest shall offer the one for a sin offering, and the other for a burnt offering; and the priest shall make an atonement for her before the Lord for the issue of her uncleanness. “

According to the Old Testament law, the woman with the issue of was ceremonially “unclean.” If she touched anyone, they would be unclean. It would have been perfectly natural for the Jewish people to view Messiah as “unclean” if she reached out and touched Him.

They would not have expected that such a man would be performing miracles by the power of God.

Unless this woman reached out by revelation to touch Messiah, she would not have wanted to touch Him.

But she did…

She pressed through the crowd to receive her healing because in spite of consulting many doctors and spending all she had trying to find a cure, she grew worse not better and she was desperate.

This was more than just a woman making a decision to be healed.

As her condition rendered her ceremonially unclean and according to the Law, she was to stay separated from people and if anyone touched her, or if she touched anyone, she made them unclean as well. If she made someone unclean due to her touch, she was committing a very serious sin.

Once she touched someone and made them unclean, that person would have to bathe, wash their clothes, and wait until the evening before being declared clean. Furthermore, if that person was unclean due to her touch, it limited what they were allowed by law to do, or in turn, who they could touch.

When the woman with the issue touched Jesus, He immediately felt strength go out of Him. Jesus asked the question, “Who touched me?”

At the very moment, Jesus knew that something had happened. He perceived that virtue had gone out of Him.

This was the bigger MIRACLE…for in this case, the opposite happened. Instead of Him becoming unclean from her touch, the purity of Yeshua the Messiah and of His tzitziyot (“tassels,” or “fringes, of Yeshua’s prayer shawl.”) remained uncompromised, while instead the cause of the woman’s impurity was instantly removed.

CLEANLINESS left Him.

In Greek the word for virtue (dunimis) and it is defined as power. We get our word dynamite from this Greek word.

In Hebrew, the word for virtue brings us a clearer definition or idea. Virtue in Hebrew is “gevorah” and it is from the root “gabar” and it means “strength, due to binding, twisting, hence a rope.

The twisted cords are the tsitsit of the prayer shawl.

The passage further states that He looked around about to see her that had done this thing. “But the woman fearing and trembling, knowing what was done in her, came and fell down before Him, and told Him all the truth.”

This was a very serious act that this woman deliberately chose to do and even though she received her healing, she tried to disappear back into the crowd.

Why was she so fearful that she was trembling? Probably it was that she knew that what she had done had broken the law of God knowing that she had made Him unclean.

To our thinking, this does not seem like such a serious act because we touch other people all the time BUT for the children of Israel it was an extremely serious sin. Because of our lack of understanding of the context, we miss the deeper meaning and see only the miracle of healing. Which in itself is remarkable but is only part of the picture. In spite of all those in the crowd pressing around Him, Messiah perceived the instant that she reached forth her hand. He also perceived her faith and in saying, who touched me, it taught a lesson to the observers.

It took great faith for this woman who had just been healed, to step out and say in front of this crowd:

It was me.. I did!

For by the custom of the law, she had knowingly and deliberately committed sin.

Jesus knew power had gone from Him and why at once she was healed!

Yeshua said she was healed because of her faith and rather than condemn or rebuke her for defiling His garment said, “Daughter, take courage; your faith has made you well.” (Matt. 9:22) Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole, go in (shalom) peace, and be whole of thy plague. “

In Greek:  πίστις pē’-stēs, meaning faithfulness, not a passive belief, but

a deep, abiding, steadfast conviction that is evidenced by fidelity, character, and action.

In Zechariah 8:23 the phrase “skirt of him that is a Jew,” speaks of the “wing” of the tallit. This phrase “God is with you,” is similar to the concept of Immanuel, meaning “God with us.”

She would have also surely known the old Testament reference to healing in His wings from Isaiah and that it was referring to His tzizit.

Also in the book of Malachi, one of the most prophetically messianic books in the Bible, the following can be found:

“But to you who fear My Name the Sun of Righteousness shall arise with healing in His wings.” Malachi 3:20

Ve•zar•cha la•chem yir•ey sh`mi she•mesh tze•da•ka oo•mar•pe bich•na•fe•ha viy•tza•tem oo•fish•tem ke•eg•lei mar•bek.

Many Christians accurately see a reference to the Messiah in this verse. Judaism also recognizes this as a messianic prophecy:
“Moses asked: ‘shall they remain in pledge forever?’ G-d replied: ‘No, only Until the sun appears’, that is, till the coming of the Messiah; for it says, But unto you that fear My name shall the sun of righteousness arise with healing in its wings.” Exodus Rabbah 31:10, Soncino Press Edition

The phrase, “Sun of righteousness,” is a picture of Messiah, who is the “Bright and Morning Star.” The fact that Messiah wore a tallit with tzitzit or fringes, like other Jewish men, is clearly understood from such scriptures as Matthew 9:20, and Matthew 14:36.

When you wrap the tallit about you, holding two of the corners out, it forms “wings.”

Many times, the Lord speaks in scripture, of His dependence upon His Father, and as our Redeeming Lamb, were He not the obedient Servant, He would not be the “Light of the World.” (John 8:12) He came in the glory of His Father. His prayer life was so profound, that His disciples observing Him, said: “Lord, teach us to pray.” (Luke 11:1)Because Yeshua wore his tallit, the border or hem of Yeshua’s garment had a particular appearance to it, due to the way in which the tallit was folded. This caused the corner tassels of the fringe to hang down. Taking hold of the “skirt” of him that is a Jew, speaks of taking hold of this outer or extended “wing” of the garment, which holds such deep significance. Why? Because it speaks of prayer.

Because of the understanding of the visual meaning of the Tallit, the scribes and Pharisees were known for extending the zit zit tassels on their garments, to make themselves look more holy and this is what Jesus was referring to in Matthew 23:5.“But they do their deeds to be noticed by men; for they broaden their phylacteries, and lengthen the tassels of their garments”. Everything was done to attract the approval and attention of others. The approval of God took a back seat. The Pharisees would dress distinctively in garb that would symbolize their righteousness. It was more important that they appeared righteous to others than whether they were really righteous or not.

In addition to their distinctive dress, the Pharisees loved places of honor at banquets, chief seats in synagogues, respectful greetings such as “Rabbi”, “Father” and “Leader”. Anything that would tend to exalt them in the eyes of men.

The account of the woman who touched His tzitzit must be combined with that of Jairus (Yair).

Jairus was one of the synagogue rulers, his daughter was dying. Jairus saw Jesus and falling at His feet, he begged Him to come and lay hands on his daughter believing she could be healed. Jesus agreed to go with him, and a great crowd followed them.

Within that same crowd was the woman just referred to.

Jairus has convinced Jesus to go with him to heal his daughter who is sick to the point of death. As a synagogue ruler he certainly knew the law. He knows that at the moment that this woman touched Jesus, He is rendered unclean and the moment he realized what had happened his heart must have sank because now Jesus would be unable to go to his daughter for these people would not have ignored this law.

The Jewish New Testament Commentary explains about this passage:

In the following incident, the raising of Jairus daughter, this principle is exemplified even more strongly, since Yeshua himself initiates contact with what is regarded in Judaism as the primary source of all impurity, a body (v.25) . . .” (comment on Matthew 9:20).

After Jesus declaration to the woman, certain people from the home of Jairus/Yair came to tell him to not trouble the master any longer because his daughter had just died. To these statements, Jesus responds by telling Jairus/Yair to not be afraid, only believe.

This is important to the rest of the story. It was forbidden for a rabbi or priest to touch a dead body and remove his state of cleanliness.

Through no fault of His own, but in the sight of all, He became unclean.

When Jesus reached Jairus house, He was told that the girl was dead. Jesus states the she is only asleep and they laugh Him to scorn, Mark 5:40. Why did He make this statement? Because He wanted them to know she was dead and He was going in.

Jesus did not allow anyone to follow beyond that point except for Peter, James, and John, the brother of James.

“But when He had put them all out, he taketh the father and the mother of the damsel, and them that were with Him, and entereth in where the damsel was lying.”Why was He able to go into the room with a dead girl? The dead are considered to be unclean, and going into the same room with a dead girl and touching her would have made Jesus unclean. However, Jesus was already unclean due to the touch of the woman with the issue of blood. Then the passage tells us that, “He took the damsel by the hand, and said unto her, Talitha cumi; which is, being interpreted, Damsel, I say unto thee, arise.

The Greek says talita coum!   Then included is a statement saying: which is translated, girl I say to you rise, or maid arise (kjv) or, my child get up (niv). The Greek word translated maid, or child, is talitha, the Greek spelling of tallit. Coum is the Hebrew word for rise, or get up.

The translators tell us it means “damsel, arise” but If the statement “talitha cumi” really meant, Damsel, I say unto thee, arise, why was it left untranslated? Something was said in that room that caused Jesus/Yeshua to instruct them to tell no man what was said or done!

Verse 41 in Hebrew (transliterated English):

Hu achaz eth yadah shel hayahda veamar eleyha talitha qumi shetargunno maarah qumi ani omer lach

The interpretation of this verse is: “He grasp hand belonging to the girl and said, elyha, talitha arise, is interpreted, young girl get up, I say to you.”

Notice that two words have been left un translated in this verse.

This is because it is difficult to translate the proper understanding of the two words (eleyah tallitah) into English. Without an understanding of these two words, it is impossible to clearly see what was happening here. It is because of the presence of these two words that Jesus/Yeshua told them not to tell anyone what had happened.

“He grasp hand belonging to the girl and said..

This is a strange interpretation of this word. The normal way to express “to her” in Hebrew would be, (shelah) and not (eleyah). Even if one chooses not to use the Hebrew word “(shelah) to indicate “to her” (othah) could be used. (Eleyah) could in very rare situations be used to mean “to her.”

However, it was considered to be a Holy word.

(Eleyah) is a compound word. (El) is a name for God.

We see this is such compound words as El-Shaddai (God the source, porvider, breast) or Bethel (house of God). Therefore, (eleyah) is the abbrevidated form of “yodh, hey, vav, hey ” the proper name of God (Yaweh). Therefore, (eleyah) is a combination of two of the names of God. In fact, these same four letters with different vowel markings means God is Jehovah. Considering the belief that the Jews held concerning the use of the name of God (eleyah) would hardly be used to indicate “to her.”

(Please keep reading, a conclusion will be made shortly.)The next word to be considered is (tallita). We know by the interpretation that tallita cannot mean girl, young girl, or maiden (see Hebrew above).

So what is being said here?

It cannot be as simple as Damsel, l say unto thee arise.

So to put these two words in the proper context we will restate the verse with the direct translation. “He grasp hand belonging to the girl and said “God speaking to (female under) tallit, get up.”

Jesus was speaking as God.

He was not speaking to the tallit but to the girl under the tallit.

This is understood by the feminine ending on the word tallit.

Could it be possible that Jesus was proclaiming Himself to be God?

That is precisely the point.

Jesus was also making the statement that He had perfectly performed the Law of the Fringe and was the person spoken of in Zechariah 8: 23,

“Thus saith the Lord of hosts; In those days it shall come to pass, that ten men shall take hold out of all languages of the nations, even shall take hold of the skirt of him that is a Jew, saying, We will go with you: for we have heard that God is with you. “

This was a messianic passage of Scripture.

Jesus was in fact, declaring Himself to be the Messiah.

What Jesus/Yeshua actually said was more like –

Girl in the Tallit, God says arise!

This is why He said not to tell what had happened.

The people knew she was dead and would just as surely know she was now alive. What He did not want them to know as yet was the fact that He walked, lived and functioned on earth as God and in fact was God! He knew it and those in the room knew it, but He did not want anyone else to know it at that point in time.It is clear that Jesus/Yeshua was wearing a talitt at the time because of the reference to it regarding the woman with the issue of blood and it would seem that Jesus/ Yeshua used His prayer shawl in the raising of Jairus daughter.

We have another indication of this very idea in Deuteronomy 8:2-3 when He told them to give the little girl something to eat.

” And thou shalt remember all the way which the Lord thy God led thee these forty years in the wilderness, to humble thee, and to prove thee, to know what was in thine heart, whether thou wouldest keep his commandments, or no. And he humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the Lord doth man live. “

Was Jesus making reference to this verse when He gave the instruction for the little girl to be fed? She had already been provided with spiritual food, (raised from the dead), and now it was time to give her physical food.

Tallit a Kum

Some Greek texts say coumi, the feminine form, which is the correct word for this verse, since talitha it’s a feminine noun. There is an Aramaic word similar to talitha that was taken for talitha. That is talyetha instead of talitha in all the manuscripts.

We know that His use of the tallit in this miracle would have been appropriate and would have been understood by those with Him.Jesus would have been speaking Hebrew, so the word talit is the closest word to the Greek transliteration.

This purports to be a translation of talita coum (in Hebrew is ‘prayer shawl rise’) and must have been added by a well intentioned translator or copier who did not understand. They mistook talitha, which is the Greek spelling of the word tallit for the Aramaic talyiata, meaning young woman.

Some scholars say in that case He would have placed his prayer shawl over the girl, then spoken to the prayer shawl. There is another Aramaic word that some say is the correct word for this verse. It is taly’tah, meaning lamb. This would have had Jesus address her as lambkin, which is not an unreasonable assumption.

Coumi would also be the correct verb because it is the same in Aramaic and Hebrew.

There is also a reference to people bringing ‘handkerchiefs’ and ‘prayer cloths’ for Him to pray over and they were a point of contact to take to those too sick to travel. Lost in translation, these were no doubt the traditional prayer shawls/tallits.

Rabbinic training is required to make prayer shawls. Paul, Priscilla and Aquilla had this kind of training. Acts 18:2, 3 Making prayer shawls is an occupation that Paul could have pursued in any area without having to take with him various tools and supplies as he travelled. So this is very likely prospect.

The Greek word skenopoioi translated prayer shawl makers or tent makers, is not found anywhere else in Scripture or in secular Greek writing. Perhaps Luke coined the word or possibly skenopoioi was used by Greek speaking Jewish people when speaking of making prayer shawls. Jewish men referred to the prayer shawl as a tent or prayer closet because it was placed over their head to shield the eyes while praying.Another reference to the prayer shawl, often overlooked, is in Matthew 25:35, 36. The verse says and I was poorly clothed and you clothed me. The Greek word for you clothed is periebalete, referring to putting on the outer garment, which would have been the prayer shawl of a Jewish man.

Ancient and modern

The fact that it was just the outer garment to be put on, shows that the person had not been naked, as some translations say, but the stranger was poorly clothed. The fact that it was a prayer shawl indicates that the person who gave the garment ministered to the spiritual needs of the stranger while also meeting their material needs.

1 Corinthians 11:15 is another reference to the prayer shawl. This Greek word is peribolaiou, which means wrapper or covering, something thrown around; in reference to a garment.   Deuteronomy 22:12 says, you will make for yourself fringes upon the four corners of your covering, prayer shawl, with which you cover yourself.

Though the word translated covering, is k’sootkha, and means simply, ‘ your covering’. There are no alternative meanings for k’soo(t) ( the kha suffix is the pronoun your). In the Septuagint peribalou is the word used to translate k’soo(t) in Deuteronomy 22:12.

In light of this, Paul was probably saying that women were given long hair instead of a prayer shawl.

But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering. 1 Cor. 11:15

The word k’soot-ho, meaning ‘ his covering’ is used in Exodus 22:26 where it shows the use of this large garment as a blanket.

These are just some ofInterestingly, in the English language the only difference between tough and touch is a g or a c. When you are having a tough time, remember that as many as touch the hem were made well. Many say they trust God but have never pressed in to know Jesus nor understand what He did for us the cross. Press in to touch the hem of His garment to both get through and to transform your tough time.

Shalom!
