Climbing Mountains and Leaving For Home – Comings and Goings

Having just completed the 49 days of Counting the Omer.

This season runs from the First Fruits – בִּכּוּרִים – Bikkurim/Resurrection

to

Pentecost/Shavuot/שָׁבוּעוֹת which begins on the 50th day from פסח – Pesach/Passover.

We remember Yeshua/Jesus was with them for 40 days after His Resurrection and appeared to many during that time, up to the day He returned Home to heaven/shamayim.

1Cor. 5:16. After that, He appeared to more than five hundred brothers at once, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep.

In John 20:17 we are told that on the first day of the week after Passover/Pesach, Jesus/Yeshua appeared to Mary Magdalene, (Miriam of Magdala).

The women that came to the tomb (Mary the Mother of James, Salome, and Joanna), then a first appearance to Peter. He also appeared to the rest of the 12 Disciples with Thomas absent, later He appeared to them with Thomas present.

The occasion recorded in 1 Corinthians 15:1-11, to 500 at one time, then to James (presumably James the brother of Jesus), then to all the Apostles, and last to Paul himself.

There was also the meeting with the 2 disciples on the Emmaus road.

The 40th day of the Omer was when His Ascension took place and the promise was given to those present that He will return the same way they saw Him go.

His second coming shall be in like manner as Acts 1:10-11 And as they were gazing intently into the sky while He was going, behold, two men in white clothing stood beside them.

His Cross is the door/Dalet by which whosoever will can enter into the eternal life to be with the Father.

Because of His resurrection, Jesus/Yeshua, has the right to give eternal life to anyone, and by His ascension our Savior entered heaven, keeping the door open for humanity.

His previous Transfiguration which began on another Mountain was completed on the Mountain of Ascension.

The Transfiguration was a manifestation of His glory a powerful demonstration of His divine nature, which He possessed prior to coming to earth in a human body.

Before Abraham was I AM. John 8:58

Undoubtedly, the purpose of His transfiguration, into at least a portion of His heavenly glory, was so that those of His disciples who were closest to Him, could gain a greater understanding of Who He was. Surely He underwent a dramatic change in appearance when the disciples saw Him in His glory.

After six days Jesus took with him Peter, James and John the brother of James, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. There he was transfigured before them “his face did shine as the sun,” “and his garments became glistering, exceeding white, so as no fuller on earth can whiten them.”

Luke 9:27; Matthew 17:1-8.

One of the purposes of the Transfiguration may have been to strengthen the faith of the disciples in His divine nature before they experienced the shock of the difficult days ahead of them.

In early times, the mount of the Transfiguration had become known as the holy mount. (2 Peter 1:18). It seems to have been known by the faithful, and one tradition identified it with Mount Thabor/Tabor.

The other view, and probably more likely one, is that Mount Hermon was the site of the transfiguration.

Hermon means: Devoted or Sanctified!

It is in the far north, the location of Caesarea Philippi, at the southwestern foothills; 25 miles northeast of the Sea of Galilee to the Golan Heights.

It is situated on a terrace 1,150 feet high overlooking a lush fertile valley. Here also, is the easternmost source for the Jordan River.

It is one of the four major headwaters.

During the Hellenistic period (323 to 31 B.C.), this city was originally called Panias (also spelled Paneas) because of its close association with the Greco-Roman god Pan. The modern name, Banias, is an Arabic corruption of the original.

In order to distinguish it from the harbor city on the Mediterranean called Caesarea Maritima, it became known as Caesarea Philippi. Philip, one of Herod the Great’s sons, renamed it so in honor of Emperor Augustus in 2 B.C.

Here in Caesarea Philippi, there was once a magnificent temple which dominated the landscape, constructed of white marble by Herod the Great to the godhead of Caesar. An earthquake in 363 C.E likely destroyed the city.

There is a cave immediately to the north of Caesarea Philippi.

This cave was said to be the birthplace of the Greco-Roman god Pan/Faunus, the god of nature, fields, forests, mountains, flocks and shepherds.

The pagan worshipers would make sacrifices at the mouth of the cave where they had built a sanctuary to Pan/Faunus.

It would seem to make sense for the transfiguration to take place in that region where Messiah had been ministering and where Peter made his confession.

Not coincidentally, at the base of this mountain was the place known as the gates of Hades, (gates of hell).

To the pagan mind, the cave at Caesarea Philippi created a gate to the underworld (Hades), where they believed fertility gods took up residence during the winter.

This location was especially unique because it stood at the base of a cliff where spring water flowed. At one time, the water ran directly from the mouth of a cave set in the bottom of the cliff. This region is referred to in the Old Testament by the name Baal-gad, which is described in the northernmost conquest of Joshua as being in the Valley of Lebanon below Mount Hermon (Josh. 11:17; 12:7; 13:5; also see: Judges 3:3; 1 Chron. 5:23).

The name Baal-gad meant literally Master Luck, the name of a god of fortune who may later have been identified with Pan. One good reason the Bride of Messiah should refrain from using the term good luck when offering encouragement to one another; but rather offer shalom and blessings to each other in Jesus/Yeshuas name.

This region was the northernmost extent of Yeshua/Jesus’ ministry and no doubt He found some privacy here with His disciples in this non-Jewish region, no less, because it was beyond the jurisdiction of Galilee’s ruler, Herod Antipas. It was here in the district of Caesarea Philippi, not long before before His final journey to Jerusalem and crucifixion that He asked the 12 disciples,

Who do you say that I am?

Matt.16:15.

It is a very important point that Jesus/Yeshua chose to ask this question here, since there were few areas anywhere else with more religious significance; and because it was filled with the temples of ancient Syrian Baal worship. Historians have identified at least 14 such temples, it was a place beneath the shadow of ancient gods.

Imagine the scene, Jesus/Yeshua was standing in an area with the temples of the Syrian gods, a place where the Greek gods were believed to look down, and the place where the most important river in Israel has its source, (the Jordan river), and asked them Who they thought He was.

Messiah knew what He was doing when choosing the 3 disciples, Peter, James and John to follow Him to the summit of Mount Hermon. His choice was not random and because of His well-defined objective, He was not concerned the rest would feel rejected or resentful but did what needed to be done. Peter would testify later, saying:

“for we did not follow cunningly devised fables when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty. For he received from God the father honor and glory when such a voice came to him from the excellent glory: “this is my beloved son, in whom I am well pleased.” and we heard this voice which came from heaven when we were with him on the HOLY MOUNTAIN.” 2 peter 1.16-18

Some may wonder why He didn’t choose His beloved Mount of Olives, or where He heard the prayer of His servant/prophet Elijah, and responded with fire on Mount Carmel? Or even the Mount of Beatitudes, where He taught, revealing the secrets of eternal life? Why did He choose the highest and most difficult mountain to climb in Israel?

Psalm 133 gives us an answer:

Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!

It is like the precious oil upon the head, running down on the beard, the beard of Aaron, running down on the edge of his garments.

It is like the dew of Hermon, descending upon the mountains of Zion; for there the Lord commanded the blessing – life forevermore.”

Yeshua/Jesus chose Mount Hermon, because He wanted to point out to His disciples what it represents, as described in the Psalm.

It was prophetic because it spoke of unity, harmony and perfect peace/shalom, among the children of God in the Kingdom of Heaven; and accurately portrays the picture of our Heavenly Fathers’ family gathered around His throne. He expresses His joy and delight in seeing His children around Him, the fruit of the sacrifice of His first born, Jesus/Yeshua.

Comparing the joy to: like the precious oil upon the head.

This precious oil upon the head represents the outpouring of the Holy Spirit in the form of a physical anointing/Shavuot/Pentecost; and it is something that can only be understood by those who have had this experience.

Like the dew of Mount Hermon is the reference to the sources of water that form the rivers, which merge together forming the River Jordan. Mount Hermon is the water source for all of Israel. Water is life/chaim, it is impossible to live without its existence and in those days, the greatest wealth of a community was water, for that reason, settlements were always built around wells/water sources. Another reason He said, John 4:14; but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.

When the Psalmist writes, the dew of Hermon that descends upon the mountains of Zion, he is portraying the fullness of life that Gods’ children enjoy in His presence.

Mount Hermon could be said to be a sanctuary that is invisible to the eyes of the wicked, being revealed to the chosen ones, because of its splendor and spiritual significance, no wonder the Messiah chose it from among the others and,

from it,

God commands the blessing

and life/chaim/lifes, forevermore!

 

It is like the dew of Hermon, descending upon the mountains of Zion; for there the Lord commanded the blessing – life forevermore.”

Small wonder the devil tried to usurp it for his own!

Because of this significance, no doubt Messiah deliberately set Himself against the world’s religions and was asking to be compared with them. Here in this setting, is where Peter boldly replies with his great confession,

You are the Messiah/the Christ, the Son of the living God. Matt. 16:16.

Now the significance of this tremendous statement of faith becomes clearer and it changed everything for the disciples.

Then Yeshua/Jesus responds in Matt. 16:17-18 Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell [literally, Hades] shall not prevail against it.

Here His reference to the cave and the gates of Hades at Mount Hermon, makes complete sense!

It is plain from Scripture that His ascension from another mountain, that of Mount of Olives; was a literal, bodily return to heaven. He rose from the ground gradually and visibly, observed by the disciples. Straining to catch a last glimpse of Yeshua/Jesus, when a cloud hid Him from their view, then, 2 angels appeared and promised the onlookers…in just the same way that you have watched Him go. Acts 1:11.

The daily route Jesus/Yeshua took in and out of the city passed over the Mount of Olives. From ancient times the revered rise overlooking Jerusalem from east was seen with importance.

The Mount of Olives is a mountain ridge east of and adjacent to Jerusalem’s Old City. It is named for the olive groves that once covered its slopes. He led the disciples over the summit and onto the eastern slope of the Mount of Olives. Interestingly, the journey was what is defined as a Sabbath’s journey; or a little more than 1/2 mile.

The ascension was the ultimate, indisputable evidence that Jesus Christ/Yeshua HaMashiach was triumphant, conquering ha satan/the adversary and all his hosts. Here is the extent of His victory, but it also reveals the measure of the power which has been bestowed upon His saints to carry out His work on earth until He returns.

It emphasizes the fact that we are given the serious responsibility of putting His will into effect on earth, as He reigns from heaven.

Matthew 6:9-13 verse 6:10.

The Rabbi/Teacher’s parting words commissioned His people to make disciples of every creature among the nations throughout the earth (Mt. 28:18-20; Mk. 16:15-16; Lk. 24:47).

This was 10 days before Shavuot and the Holy Spirit/Ruach HaKodesh outpouring.

Pesach/Passover is incomplete and Shavuot/Pentecost obstructed and the Second Coming of Messiah impossible without His Ascension!

Acts 2:5  And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. 3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.

This reference to Cloven Tongues may have been an indication to them that the fire was not strange fire but Holy acceptable fire from heaven.

Leviticus 11:3. Whatsoever parteth the hoof, and is cloven footed, and cheweth the cud, among the beasts, that shall ye eat.

However one of the main meanings to them was that Pentecost/Shavuot was the celebration of the giving of Torah in the wilderness and the manifested presence of God came as fire and remained with them by night for 40 years; and furthermore, fire was always known as a cleansing agent.

This was the presence of God, the impartation of His spirit infilling the properly prepared vessels; igniting that zeal to go and make disciples of all nations.

One final interesting point is that, a critical scene was repeated post resurrection but pre ascension.

The location was beside the Sea of Galilee in Luke 5:1-11; Matt.4:18-22; Mark 1:16-20.

Here in Matthew 4:22, Yeshua/Jesus called them and they left everything to follow Him….. (Have we?)…

But not until after He told them them to let down their nets for a catch. Which they did and pulled in a huge haul of fish.

He stated He would make them fishers of men. Then in John 21, He is again in Galilee beside the sea and tells them to let down their nets for a catch.

Once again the nets were filled to overflowing.

He tells them to come and eat.

Again the reference to feeding them for He is the bread of life.

This is at the end of His time with them.

We see the reference to

the beginning and the end

the first and the last

the Alef and Tav

the Alpha and Omega,

(Rev.22:13)

start and finish of their time with Him.

The catch of fish to becomes the catching of men,

catching souls for the kingdom of the Heavens.

The 2nd time was the place of commissioning.

A question arises always where did the fire, hot coals, fish and bread come from?

The coals/ Stones were hot so it would seem that He had been there a while.

Bring some fish He says.

Jesus saith unto them, Bring of the fish which ye have now caught. John 21:10

The bread wouldn’t have been the flat crisp sort so that it could be broken, not a soft loaf like we usually think of.

This makes another question. Where did He get the bread from, was it another miracle?

Did He turn some of the stones beside the sea of Galilee into bread?

Stones that look very much like bread!

This was the very subject of an earlier temptation the devil used against Him, to prove that He was the Son of God/YHWH.

Now it was no temptation, but instead, a provision to feed His children-mishpachah/disciples-talmidim/friends-cheverim.

He was and is the Son of the Living God, the Creator of the universe, who took the elements of the dirt of the earth He created to form us. Surely then, as the devil came testing/ tempting Him, He was able to do just that… or it would not have been by its’ very definition – a temptation?

What we do know is everything points to Jesus as Messiah, savior and He points always to the father. Everything has meaning whether we fully understand it or not.

Pentecost/Shavuot was a ‘second giving’, of the Torah.

A giving of Himself, of His risen Spirit/Ruach;

to fill them and fire them up.

His Torah/Word is no longer written on stone but in their,

and our,

hearts of flesh.

He is the living Torah, the living Word made flesh and is still living amongst us.

Knowledge is not the end goal here in these posts… but Relationship is.

Knowledge and understanding, are simply an aid to a deeper understanding of the One who gave His life for us.

This Shavuot /Pentecost allow the Ruach/Spirit of Holy Fire to do His complete work in us that we become vessels fit for the Masters use.

The purpose being that so many more souls are added to His kingdom.

As we are climbing the mountains with Him following His lead know we are soon leaving for home too. It’s possible that when He said earlier meet me in Galilee it was also related to meet me in the kingdom of God because Galilee was a home where the meeting could go on without any distraction! Did Yeshua/Jesus choose Galilee to show them how they would also join Him in the Kingdom of God, the kingdom of His Heavens?

Keep your eyes upon Jesus/Yeshua.

Look full in His wonderful face

and the things of this world will grow strangely dim

in the light of His glory and grace.

Be ready… Look to the Son!

Swords, Mountains and Gardens

Connecting some more dots with some of the places and things mentioned in the last few posts.… with God there is always more and this post takes a look at a link to the Mishkan, Gardens and Sukkot.

The wilderness camp was at the base of Mount Sinai.

Mount Sinai was also called mount Horeb, the word Horeb is linked to the word HEREV which means sword.

(Hebrew: חרב ‎, Sword) (Remembering that b and v are the same letter bet/vet.)

From charab; drought; also a cutting instrument (from its destructive effect), as a knife, sword, or other sharp implement — axe, dagger, knife, mattock, sword, tool.

This is interesting and significant on several levels, as here was where God cut the covenant between Himself and the children of Israel so it could also be called the mountain of the cutting.

Strong’s Hebrew: 2719.

חָ֫רֶב (chereb) — a sword

In Genesis we read that God

“drove the man out of Eden and stationed east of the garden of Eden the cherubim and the fiery ever-turning sword, to guard the way to the tree of life”

 (See last post for more on Eden.)

SWORD OF God = cherev shel hashem 

The Hebrew word for sword is Charev or Harev with the start of it being just like the word Hanukkah sometimes spelled Chanukah.

As noted, the Hebrew word for sword is Charev or Herev/Harev – חרב

The pictograph for Zayin looks like a sword, a weapon; the classical Hebrew script is constructed of a Vav with a large “crown” on its head.

There is a Mystery in the Zayin as it is considered a “crowned” Vav and just as Vav represents “yashar,” which is ‘straight light from God to man’, so Zayin reflects the (or chozer), of the vav as the ‘or chozer/ returning light.’

Think for a moment of other places where a crown is mentioned in scripture and what the symbol of the vav is…

Zayin (also spelled zain or zayn or simply zay) is the seventh letter of the Semitic abjads, including Phoenician Zayin , Hebrew ‘Zayin ז, Yiddish Zoyen ז, Aramaic Zain ,

Thought to mean Glowing/Heat, Mount Horeb is one of two names given to a mountain mentioned in the book of Deuteronomy as the site where God gave the Ten Commandments to Moses.

The second name of Horeb in Exodus is, the Mountain of God/the Mountain of YHVH.

Mount Horeb, Hebrew: חֹרֵב,

Greek in the Septuagint: χωρηβ,

Latin in the Vulgate: Horeb.

Mountain in paleo is: har

Hey – Resh

Meaning: behold the head above the rest.

Mt. Horeb – Most likely synonymous with Sinai, was the scene of the burning bush,

of the giving of the Law, and of Elijah’s vision. 

We saw the first time the word HEREV is used Genesis was when God places the cherubim at the entrance to the Garden of Eden with the flaming swords, or Herev, because

the Herev is a sword raised up against sin!

And is familiar to us as being symbolic of the Word of God in Ephesians 6:17 and Hebrews 4:11

At the fall from Grace

They were removed from the Garden of life

after accessing a tree and

causing sin to reign

God took man out

of a garden of life

and they died spiritually

(broken relationship/separation from The Father.)

The day sin was put to death

the opposite occurred:

man took God down from a tree/wooden cross,

and placed Him in a garden of death,

the garden tomb

where He was resurrected into LIFE

and restored the broken relationship

with the Father having experienced the separation from Him.

In the Song of Solomon, there is another garden we read:

blow upon my Garden that the spices may flow.

Spices permeate the beautiful story, the Song of Solomon; Shir Hashirim, is the equally pleasant presence of the fragrance of spices.

Without the spices mentioned in this book of love between the Messiah and His Bride Israel, one could hardly imagine the prophesied marriage, or the communion of believers with their God.  Spices seem to be referring to the ascent to the heights of Israel and also pointing to enraptured heights of being in the presence of the Lord and Savior.   

The spices are found in the presence of both Bride and Bridegroom, and in the ‘garden enclosed’—representing a virtual garden of each delicate and holy spice.  

Most of the spices mentioned are the spices of the Tabernacle, the use and purpose of each spice commanded by God to Moses and Israel, and pointing to the pleasant, beautiful realm of Heaven and the throne/presence of God.  

A deeper look at each spice, shows not only the symbolic value of each substance, but the nature of the spices; which in turn point to Messiah and His suffering. (not included in this post).

This should be our prayer..

Breathe upon us with Your Spirit/Ruach wind and stir up the sweet spices of Your life/chaim within us. Spare nothing as You make us Your fruitful gardens and hold nothing back until we release Your fragrance. Come walk with us as You walked with Adam in Your Eden garden and taste the fruits of Your life in us.

When Solomon talked of his beloved feeding the garden and gathering lilies it indicates that, the Lord keeps on feeding and strengthening those who are maturing spiritually; while gathering to Himself, those who are away from His word and still need to know Him.

So man placed God in a garden of death and laid on Him spices, which also came from a garden.

In the Song of Solomon reference to the bride, (us), is also made.

Note the crown!

Let my beloved come into His garden.

The tomb of God is a Garden tomb.

Meaning it is not just a place of death and ending… it is a garden

the place of life

where things sprout and grow.

The place of new beginnings

that place 

Ha Makem’- ‘The Place’- המקום

of life/lives

Chaim.

All life now comes out of death.

We all must die in order to live.

Really, we should rejoice to enter His tomb..

to let the old man die

then we will find true new life.

And we are to raise another sword/herev,

the Word of God, the Sword of the Spirit.

As the law, is the instructions for life to be lived righteously, was given on the

Mountain of the sword/Horeb/Herev.

Or :

the mountain (behold the head above the rest) of HisWord.

This instruction was as a sword to be raised up against sin.

Not only corporately but at an individual level in life. We must use that sword against sin, which is, whatever does not line up with the Word of God. Use it to cut away (zayin) and circumcise our hearts putting every sin to death and driving out of the garden of our heart where sin will choke His-word .

The meaning of the letter bet also seen in the temporary house of Sukkot/Tabernacles ….. a place of safety and protection.

Coming from the ancient Hebrew prayer, which is called the hashkiveinu, and it describes an usual picture asking for:

His tabernacle to be spread over them.

Hashkiveinu is the second blessing following the Shema during Maariv.

It is a petitionary prayer to be able to lie down in peace/shalom at night and to return to life the following day.

Like a continual resurrection to life, where His Mercies are new every morning!

The prayer envisions God as a guide and shelter during the night ahead and praises God for watching over us, delivering us, and being merciful.

Here we ask God’s protection from the terrors of night “in the shadow of Your wings”- i.e., like the shelter that a mother bird gives to her young

Psalm 91:4 You will cover us with Your pinions, and under Your wings shall we take refuge.

This word is requesting, (actually commanding), God to make us lie down. We lie and down sleep as an act of surrender to God’s will that we sleep.

Hashkiveinu (hash-kee-VAY-noo), is one of the most beloved prayers of the evening service. It goes back to ancient times, when sleep was poorly understood. 

Hashkiveinu Adonai Eloheinu l’shalom Spread the shelter of your peace over us.

V’hamideinu malkeinu L’chaim

Raise us back our King to life.

Keep us safe through the night

Till we wake with morning light.

Revelation 7:9… is the vision of the multitude standing before the throne in white robes holding palm branches…

which is what they held at the feast of tabernacles, or sukkot.

verse 15 says he who sits on the throne will spread his tabernacle over them.

The same unusual picture and the same words as the prayer.

God wants His people to dwell under His Sukkah, His BET/house/tent/His tabernacle, the place of his peace/ the Tabernacle of His shalom.

A Sukkah can be built anywhere. The one in the wilderness was mobile, so where ever we are, we can ask Him to spread over us the tabernacle of His shalom; which means we can live in, and under, that place of peace which includes grace and mercy.

The secret place of his tent is the now the Garden of our heart.

A pavilion is a safe shelter, here His Tent often referred to as the Tabernacle of David. The place of our hiding.

For in the time of trouble He will hide me in His pavilion He will hide me in the secret place of His Tent.

This is connected to Rev 7:9 and Tabernacles Sukkot Revelation 7:15

Revelation 7:15 New American Standard Bible (NASB) 15 For this reason, they are before the throne of God; and they serve Him day and night in His temple; and He who sits on the throne will spread His tabernacle over them. Revelation 7:15 (Or sanctuary.)

This Greek word, sk’enos, means ‘tabernacle, booth, shelter, or covering’ and also appears in Rev. 21:3.

This same word, sk’enos, is used to speak of Jesus/Yeshua during His first coming, (John 1:14).

Here we can see the protection provided in Rev. 7:16, corresponding to Isa. 4:5-6, and the fountain of living waters in Rev. 7:17 and 21:4.

For this reason, they are [standing] before the throne of God; and they serve Him [in worship] day and night in His temple; and He who sits on the throne will spread His tabernacle over them and shelter and protect them [with His presence].

The poreketh as the vail of the Old Testament is misleading when applied to katapetasma in the New Testament. There are two katapetasma’s in the Holy places. There are two masak’s in the Holy places. There is only one poreketh. (see diagram below).

The way back between the cherubim is through the curtain, upon which the cherubim were represented visually. This curtain was hanging between the holy of holy’s and the inner Court. It was torn from top to bottom at the time of Messiah’s death as He torn for us.

Sin is dealt with in the court where the Bronze altar and bronze laver were and the sacrifice was made..

we can now enter in sinless because of the blood of Messiah that is already on the Mercy seat between the cherubim/The kapporet.

We can enter in to His presence, His ruach hakodesh, His Holy Spirit as the wind/ breath of His presence; blowing the sweet fragrance of spices from His Garden. And with His presence filling the house (our bodies), the temple, the inner sanctuary, not the outer court or the inner court of the temple; but the Holy of Holies. (Jesus/Yeshua in the tabernacle); the sanctuary, which is the body in which we live.

The temple is the whole plan in a structure, where Gentiles/ heathen were welcome in the outer court; so it’s precise that we are the sanctuary of the Lord – His inner place of glory, ha makem of the Shekinah presence.

Ha Makem’- ‘The Place’-המקום

Psalm 27:5 is the pavilion, the safe shelter, the secret place of His tent.

Tent as in Mishkan, and Sukkot booths or tents; (temporary residence, also symbolic of the fact our bodies are temporary residences while here on earth.)

The fulfillment of Sukkot will be when He tabernacles with men forever.

The links to the Mishkan/Tabernacle, 3 Gardens and Sukkot, together with the Herev of The Lord, seems undeniable. Messiah Jesus/Yeshua is in everything we just have to know where to look!

It is only by passing through the

sword of the cherubim in Messiah,

the Word of God made flesh,

that we can enter the Garden

and the life of grace

that contains all the blessings

within the shalom of Messiah.

This is the WAY (back) as if we are accessing EDEN passing through the cherubim and the flaming sword/Herev.

The hope of His calling us, the sukkah of His shalom, the hashkiveinu (spread over us the tabernacle of your peace)…

It is obvious from reading the scriptures that we were not created to live in the daily conflicts of strife and struggles of this world and its systems. Our Heavenly Father created us to live in His presence, to be, to exist, to abide, to grow, to rest, in a garden called Eden.

Adam and Eve had to leave so they would not eat of the tree of life and live forever in a fallen state,

There are also deeper Hebrew meanings of the ‘Garden of Eden’.

The Hebrew word for ‘delicate’ is ‘Me’udan’ {מעודן} – which comes from the same root and the initial Latin meaning of ‘delicate’ (‘delicatus’ in Latin) is ‘something that gives pleasure’ (compare with ‘delicious’ – food that is so tasty it gives one pleasure).

The first residence of man, called in the Septuagint Paradise, which is a word of Persian origin, and describes an extensive tract of pleasure land, similar to an English park; and the use of it suggests a wider view of man’s first abode than it being just a small garden!

The Garden was planted by God and then He put the already formed man into the garden.

The Lord God created the Garden specifically for Adam, the first man, whom God had formed.

In Genesis 2:8-9, we read: The LORD God planted a garden eastward in Eden, and there He put the man whom He had formed. And out of the ground the LORD God made every tree grow that is pleasant to the sight and good for food.

When man chose sin, (the pathway to confusion chaos and death – RA);

the doorway in Eden that led to glorified eternal life was removed from the earth.

(THE TREE OF LIFE – JESUS/YESHUA).

They had been tested (just as we all are) and found unworthy to enter into eternal life because of sin.

Did the promise of a glorified body leave his mind when he looked at the tree of knowledge of good and evil? What was he thinking?

God has given us another opportunity with another tree… but this was not pleasant to the eye..

(Isaiah 53:2 and when we see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him.)

nor desirable for food yet …. and He told us to eat of Him… this tree was dead and cut into a cross, instead of sweet fruit, there was only the stench of sin and death..

Eve looked up to leaves and desirable fruit.

Yeshua/Jesus looks down, from a lifeless dead tree, onto lost sinners and desires them.

He took upon Himself Adam’s sin and the sins of all the offspring until this day and going forward. 1 Cor. 1:18.

In a WAY, He is Eden/Eden’s door/Dalet, the door to eternal life/Nun(or Noon).

In Eden, the tree of life grew in the midst of the garden, however in the new Eden/new Jerusalem, (which comes down from heaven), the tree of life grows on either side of the river. 

According to Revelation, it seems to have multiplied and expanded, implying that everyone will have access to it; all will be welcome to eat their fill.

The Garden of Eden 

(Hebrew: גַּן־עֵדֶן – gan-ʿḖḏen),

also called Paradise, is the biblical garden of God described in Genesis and Ezekiel. Gen.13:10 refers to the garden of God, and the trees of the garden are mentioned in Ezekiel 31.

We are to understand the Grace of God in truth. Col. 1:16

We are joint heirs of the Grace. 1Peter 3:7; 4:10,16.

For the law was given through Moses, but Grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. (John 1:17)

But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ by grace you have been saved. Eph. 2:4-5

The first garden was an enclosed place surrounded and protected but from what?

From everything outside (chet)

it’s perimeter fence.

We know because outside was not so favorable to humans. Adam found that out when expelled from its location.

Outside was not preferable or even equal; it was hostile and God’s presence and provision was not there in abundance where he had never had to ask for anything.

Now he has needs, need of everything…

Eden was a place, of complete Shalom.

The house that surrounds life!

This is the common word for belly but scripture also uses it for the womb.

(looked at in previous post as connected to mercy/compassion);

Waters of life (Mem) or chaos are also in the word for peace-shalom. 

In the paleo it is

Sheen: teeth, destroy

Lamed: staff, authority

Vav: hook, nail, establish

This indicates that Shalom peace, only comes…

when the authority connected with chaos and confusion is destroyed!

Every time we say Shalom/peace, we are uttering a prophetic declaration that..

someone will come and destroy the one who is causing all the chaos and confusion…

and in reality that is the Sar Shalom the Prince of Peace.

He knew what He had come to do so when Yeshua/Jesus said:

Peace/Shalom I leave with you I you My

Peace/Shalom

I give to you not as the world gives, give I to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid” John 14:27.

He was, (and still is) the authority who came to destroy the one connected with chaos and confusion!

The definition of Shalom cannot be translated into English by one word, but its’ essence is contained in the following phrases:

It means to set, to establish you in shalom. The law of our covenant with Him does not give it and leave it at that, but he sees to it that you are firmly established in shalom.

Shalom, the word normally translated peace, means wholeness, completeness, nothing missing, nothing left out, health, welfare, security, justice, and tranquility, also freedom from all disaster. Having a settled quietness and composure of mind, the fullness of the word for peace which is ‘Shalom’ which could also read ‘full, total and complete wholeness for the human spirit, soul, and body.’

A Hebrew scholar gave the best English translation of shalom: no good thing is withheld.

Shalom comes from shalem meaning to be complete, so when there is shalom there is tranquility just as there is sufficient food clothing and housing. There is divine health, with no sickness.

Shalom means an absence of: disorder, injustice, bribery, corruption, conflict, flat, hatred, abuse, violence, pain, suffering, immorality and all the other negative forces. 

When shalom reigns with our Sar Shalom, in complete control, there will be no immorality, no injustice and the principles in the scriptures will be followed by all; and then the command to love your neighbor will be made complete.

The outside of eden was a place without Shalom, which eventually brought death to Adam and Eve.

It was the opposite of Shalom – it is called Ra (resh-ayin)/Rasha (evil,wicked).

While Ra is commonly translated evil or wicked, evil, literally meaning out of harmony with God, the real meaning in English is not expressed in the dictionary.

The meaning of the Hebrew word Rasha:

reysh (resh)

= wicked, guilty

Head = person

teeth = devouring

eye = sees

meaning:person of the devouring eye

(gives a new perspective on  why we are to refrain from coveting and evil eye!)

and

Ra:Reysh Ayin – bad, evil.

person of the eye:

a person who watches can be good or evil,

Ra is the total opposite of shalom, so it means that nothing makes sense or is right. Chaos or anarchy are often used in translation because they may best expressed the meaning of Ra. Anarchy or chaos reigned when the children of Israel strayed after false gods, when the seasons of the Lord and the appointed times were ignored.

When there is chaos in society the bullies take over, corruption and bribery are common, freedoms are restricted; immorality is the norm and there is no order and no justice in society.

The mild side of Ra could be described as the occasions in our lives when we feel that even though we can’t put our finger on it, there is just a feeling of things not being right.

The far end of Ra is when everything is wrong, as with an absolutely hopeless situation. In that case only a personal relationship with the living God can give us shalom/peace in our spirits.

It was a place where food and water were abundant, the environment was perfect, not too hot or too cold; you could say it was climate controlled. No striving was necessary. There were no enemies or threats or danger.

Could a definition of Grace be EDEN? The original state of Grace from which we all are fallen?

The term falling from Grace is often used to describe what happened to Adam and Eve but it also includes everyone of us.

Eden/Grace was the calibre of the existence of true life as it was originally designed/ created to be.

Therefore the position is only re-attainable by Grace….which we know to be truth. Eph 2:8

“For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.”

Amazing Grace – more amazing than we knew.

A literal state/place of being.

The Chen of God.

We saw in a previous post that we enter in by or through Grace.

Do we literally enter into a spiritual environment of grace that surrounds us like a womb?

Jesus/Yeshua, tells us we enter in through the narrow gate/door.

This is entering into spiritual Eden.

We are in a way, going back

back to Eden;

however it is the Eden of the future, yet the original Eden was not destroyed so maybe it still exists ….. We sometimes call it heaven? Eden was heaven on earth just has Jesus/Yeshua stated in the disciples prayer – on earth as it is in heaven, as above, so below…….

So the place,

‘Ha Makem’-המקום

where we fell from the state of grace, was an enclosure, a GAN, a garden, with protective walls made for a specific purpose.

Could it be said that the state of Grace therefore is Edenic in nature?

Because the state of Grace lacks nothing – therefore it would appear to be equal to shalom, (as we understand it by its definition). With nothing missing nothing broken,etc.

This is the place/state of being, of peace that passes understanding of the mind, that the world cannot know or experience or dwell in or have within; because as seen, everything outside of Eden is RA; which is resh ayin and is the complete opposite of shalom.

God planted a garden Genesis 2:8

GAN = enclosure..

Referring to the walls or fences that surround a grove of trees in ancient lands built to keep unwanted animals out.

The definitions of the letters in CHEN in Paleo Hebrew pictographs for an enclosure, a place of safety protection, includes the Paleo Hebrew picture of a fence and a seed.

Chet noon/nun

So have we by grace/chen entered spiritually into grace, the future eden? In Messiah we have returned to the pre-fall state, (back to Eden), so we might also call it the new Jerusalem or heaven.

Genesis 3:23. They were sent out of the garden because sin could not stay where the presence of God was manifested. So they had to leave. Eden was the garden of God then and it will be also in the future.

Grace had a meaning in that there was a boundary that encompassed it; this was true not only of Eden, but also the Israelites camp in the wilderness.

No sin could be within the camp where Gods’ presence was and which is why Messiah was was crucified outside the city walls/camp.

And the outside of the camp designation, did this mean there was no grace there?

There is so much more to this concept e.g. when we say glibly… But we are no longer under the law we are under Grace.

And also consider the statement made by Paul that God told him that His grace was sufficient for him….

To learn the definition of God’s grace, it is wise to understand the Greek and Hebrew words behind this term. A prominent Old Testament word describing God’s grace is chesed.

This word speaks of deliverance from enemies, affliction, or adversity. It also denotes enablement, daily guidance, forgiveness, and preservation; and in the Hebrew mindset it meant being able to be part of the community enclosure.

 As we have seen the Hebrew word for grace is chen, חן

which derives from a shoresh(root), meaning favor, mercy, kindness, graciousness. In Exodus 34:6-7, one of the great attributes revealed about the LORD is that He is gracious (chanun), and in Psalm 86:15, David is no doubt reminded of this fact.

Strong’s Hebrew: 2587. חַנּוּן (channun)  gracious

Grace (χαρις) – We have to be on our guard against the supposition that grace is an abstract quality; it is an active personal principle, showing itself in our dealings with those by whom we are surrounded. … In the great proportion of passages in which the word grace is found in the New Testament, it signifies the unmerited operation of God in the heart of man, which is done through the agency of the Holy Spirit.

Greek for Grace (χαρις)  CHARIS literally means ‘favour’, to bend or stoop in kindness to another as a superior to an inferior. It has the idea of graciousness in manner or action.

It almost always means the power of salvation which finds expression in specific gifts and acts. 

Recall The Hebrew word translated as grace is חן (hhen, Strong’s #2580) and is a two-letter parent root. חן (hhen) comes the verbal root חנה spelled exactly the same except with the addition of the letter ה (h) at the end. The following verse provides a good e.g. of the meaning of this verb.

And Isaac departed thence, and pitched his tent in the valley of Gerar, and dwelt there. (KJV, Genesis 26:17)

Recall this verb means “to pitch a tent” or “to camp.” The noun derived from this verb is מחנה (mahhaneh, Strong’s # 4264).

When we think of a camp we think of tents scattered about in a general area, but the camps of the Ancient Hebrews were a little different as the picture below shows.

The tents were set up in a sort of circle

(a womb-like shape)

and these tents serve as a wall/fence, separating and protecting the inside of the camp from the outside.

At this point it may help to look at the pictographic Hebrew script again which was used to originally write the word חן (hhen).

The first letter is the letter hhet/chet, which was written as

and is a picture of a wall,

having the meaning of separation

as the wall separates the inside from the outside.

The second letter is the letter nun, which was written as

and is a picture of a sprouting seed having the meaning of continue as the seed continues a lineage to the next generation; (as does the seed when planted in the womb).

When these two letters are combined they mean

the wall that continues.

The tents in the picture above are a wall that continues around the camp.

A second verbal root derived from the parent root חן (hhen) is חנן (Hh.N.N, Strong’s #2603), spelled exactly the same except with the addition of the letter ן (n) at the end and Channah H2580

This verb is often translated as to be gracious or have mercy, however these are abstract terms and do not help us understand the meaning of this verb from an Hebraic perspective, which always relates words to something concrete.

One of the best tools to use to find the more concrete meaning of a word is to look at how that word is paralleled with other words in poetical passages. In the following verses the translation of the verb חנן (Hh.N.N) are underlined and the word that it is paralleled with will be in black.

Have mercy upon me, O LORD; for I am weak: O LORD, heal me; for my bones are vexed. (KJV, Psalm 6:2)

Hear, O LORD, and have mercy upon me: LORD, be thou my helper. (KJV, Psalm 30:10)

But thou, O LORD, be merciful unto me, and raise me up, that I may requite them. (KJV, Psalm 41:10)

Be merciful unto me, O God, be merciful unto me: for my soul trusteth in thee: yea, in the shadow of thy wings will I make my refuge, until these calamities be overpast. (KJV, Psalm 57:1)

O turn unto me, and have mercy upon me; give thy strength unto thy servant, and save the son of thine handmaid. (KJV, Psalm 86:16)

Through this process we find that this Hebrew verb is paralleled with such ideas as healing, help, being lifted up, finding refuge, strength and salvation (literally rescue).

From a concrete Hebraic perspective, חנן (Hh.N.N) means all of this, which we can sum up with providing protection. Where does one run to for protection? The camp, and now we see how חנה (Hh.N.H), the camp, and חנן (Hh.N.N), protection, are related. We also need to see how these words are related to the parent root חן (hhen).

A gift is as a precious stone in the eyes of him that hath it… (KJV, Proverbs 17:8)

In this verse, the Hebrew word ‫חן (hhen) is translated as precious, something of beauty and value.

A gracious woman retaineth honour: and strong men retain riches. (KJV, Proverbs 11:16)

In this verse the grace, or beauty, of the woman is contrasted with the strength of a man.

Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised. (KJV, Proverbs 31:30

Again, this Hebrew word is being paralleled with beauty and this beauty is something that is precious and graceful, which is exactly how the Hebrews would have seen the camp of protection, a graceful and precious place.

Now we will return to our original definition of the English word grace.

It began at nightfall on August 10 this year, and concluded at nightfall on Sunday, August 11 2019.

 The 9th of Av, Tisha b’Av,

 Tish‘āh Be’āv בְּאָב תִּשְׁעָה

What is its’ significance and is there anything we can learn from it? 

Tisha is the Hebrew word for the number 9

Av is the 11th month of the Hebrew Calendar and falls in July or August.

 It is the saddest day on the Jewish calendar because it is the culmination of the Three Weeks of Sorrow…

a period of time during which, Israel marks the time of the destruction of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem.

 The 9th of Av, Tisha b’Av, commemorates a list of catastrophes so severe, it seems as if it is a day set aside by God for suffering. National calamities occurred and because of this it is a time of mourning and also of repentance.

From morning to moUrning is only a matter of adding U (yoU) into the mo_rning time of each day! When we are focused on self, we are not focused on Him. When we are focused on Him we rejoice to see that His mercies are new every morning.

When we, that is our flesh, gets in the mix we enter into the mourning!

Tisha B’Av is a record of both destruction and renewal following the things that have happened to Israel over the centuries.

The first and earliest reference is in Deuteronomy 1:1 –3:22

Deuteronomy 1:1

Deuteronomy is Greek and means:

repetition of the Torah

it is derived from the Hebrew phrase, Mishnah ha Torah. Deuteronomy 17:18

דברים – Devarim

That is from the first verse of Deuteronomy, the final book of the Torah of Moses as he begins to remind this new generation of Israelites of the law given to them at Mount Sinai after their miracle Exodus from Egypt.

 In our English Bibles, Devarim is known as “Deuteronomy,” from a Greek word used to translate the phrase mishneh ha-Torah (“copy of the Torah,” Deut. 17:18).

The Hebrew, Sefer D’varim, refers to its first words: Eleh ha-d’varim, “These are the words [that Moses addressed to all Israel]” (Deuteronomy1:1). Derived from the Greek translation for Mishneh Torah, Deuteronomium means “second law” and refers to the fact that Moses is repeating the Exodus/Numbers narrative.

The term can also stretch to mean discourses or talks. The English name, Deuteronomy, comes from the name which the book bears in the Septuagint (וץפוסןם ליןם) and in the Vulgate (Deuteronomium).

This first reference is of the 12 spies, which is, Meraglim – מרגלים – in Hebrew.

It comes from the root word ragil, which means to habituate oneself, to become accustomed to. Did the meraglim put too much value on the habit and predictability of life?

The Hebrew word refers to one who scouts a land to gather information and the English word refers to one who explores a land for apparently recreational purposes. Nonetheless, the twelve spies which Moshe/Moses sent are generally known as meraglim—not tarim.

Meraglim which can also mean traitors or deserters. In Numbers 13, the Hebrew word describing the group is also the word usually translated as men or as princes.

The Hebrew year was 2448 – 1312 BCE. During the time of Moses, The Israelites were in the desert, recently having experienced the miraculous Exodus, and were now about to enter the Promised Land of Canaan. To assist in formulating a prudent battle strategy they send out a reconnaissance mission first.

These meraglimincluded Caleb and Joshuah and were the cream of the Israelite tribes. Moses chose one righteous prince from each of the 12; Levi being the only tribe which was exempt.

Joshua was a type of Yeshua/Messiah who would bring salvation to the people and lead them into the promised land.

Joshua, who was to succeed Moses’ had been known up until this point in time, as Hoshea, which is the same Hebrew word as Joshua (Yehoshua), but without the letter yud/yod.

Moses added the yud/yod to Hoshea’s name, changing its’ meaning to:

God will save you [from their plans].

Adding a Yod was no random act for the letter Yod, although the smallest of the letters, is the little that holds a lot.

Yod/yud has a numerical value of 10 symbolic of the full manifestation of God; it represents the spiritual, all of that which is beyond the physical, yet it plays the most important role in the whole of Creation.

The first letter of God’s name YHWH is a Yod/Yud.

Yod represents a mere dot, iota (in Greek), a little speck, a tiny point in which all the divine energy of Creation is concentrated.  For infinite God to create a finite world there had to be contraction, a containment. The God of infinity made something finite.

All 22 letters have a yud contained in them as the first point of every letter that is formed.

It is also a picture of humility. An example being, when Jacob was renamed from Ya’akov to Yisrael, all that remained of his former Hebrew name was the letter Yod!

Each letter of the Hebrew alphabet in the Old Testament has an associated pictogram (a symbol or icon) that adds meaning to the open text.

This is evidence of a supernatural hand of design behind the original Hebrew text of the Bible and a very good reason to look at their original meaning. 

Moses did this before the scouting mission. No doubt the added boost of spiritual power this new name represented, would serve him well in the difficult times that were to come.

Joshua is a Biblical given name derived from the Hebrew Jehoshua/ Yehoshua (יהושע) meaning the LORD is salvation. יְהוֹשֻׁעַ

The name was a common alternative form of the name יֵשׁוּעַ – yēšūă which corresponds to the Greek spelling Ἰησοῦς (Iesous), from which, through the Latin Iesus, comes the English spelling Jesus.

The 12 Spies (Meraglim) return on the eighth day of Av and report that the land is unconquerable. That night, the 9th of Av, the people cry.

Joshua (Yehoshua) tried to reason with the people giving his positive report,

but the people were not convinced, and went so far as to threaten to stone Caleb and Joshua.

They insist that they’d rather go back to Egypt than be slaughtered by the Canaanites. God is not happy with this public demonstration of distrust in His power, to bring them successfully into the land He had promised them.

And His presence appeared in the Tabernacle expressing His exasperation with the nation and His intention to wipe them out.

This was not the first time that this had happened, only 12 months earlier God had considered destroying the people after the sin of the golden calf. It was at that time, God gave Moses the 13 Attributes of Mercy, and explained the process through which Divine forgiveness could be obtained.

Moses once again begged for mercy, pointing out that if God were to destroy the people right there, the nations would mistakenly think that He did not have the power to bring them into the Promised Land. After Moses recounted the 13 Attributes, God agreed to spare the children of Israel.

However, because they accepted the slanderous report of the 10 Spies in the desert; the decree was issued forbidding them from entering the Land of Canaan, consequently that generation of Israelites never enters the Holy Land. Only their children had that privilege, after wandering in the desert for another 38 years.

The 9th of AV was the day they returned to Kadesh where they were camped. It was almost 6 weeks after scouting the land. (40 days)

The spies went to the people instead of to Moses and Aaron, with the bad report and a warning that conquering those in the land would be impossible. The biggest obstacle being that the cities were fortified with walls as was Jericho.

Only two of those who returned showed faith and had a positive attitude.

After the immediate rejoicing over the abundant produce they returned with, the bad report caused the people to yearn for what they had left behind in Egypt. Numbers 14:3-4

Because of this they were delayed 40 years from entering the promised land.

A year for each day they had been in the land spying. 

Except for Yehoshua bin Nun (Joshua the son of Nun) and Kalev (Caleb) the son of Jephunneh, every person 20 years of age and older were fated to die in the wilderness.

The other 10 spies were immediately killed by a plague sent from the Lord.

So they wandered for 40 years and the Hebrew writings record that, each year on the eve of the 9th of AV Moses would tell the people,

Every year, on Erev Tisha B’Av, they would leave the close vicinity of the camp and go and dig their own graves. They would then lay down and sleep in them overnight. The next day the shout went up, let the living separate from the dead.

The understanding was that those of them who had reached the age of 60 would not rise the next day and that first

morning

some 15,000 individuals were found dead in their graves. This was indeed a moUrning day. 

According to tradition, this harrowing ritual was repeated annually for 40 years, until the original 600,000 male Israelites who left Egypt, those who doubted that they could attain the Promised Land finally died.

(600,000 did not include women, children and old men.)

So every year, those who were supposed to die that year passed away, and those that survived returned to their tents. (Bava Batra 121a, Rashbam).

Accordingly, throughout the forty years, the people were

first buried and

then died.

This continued until a year came that no one died….

That particular year they thought they had got the day wrong and so they slept an extra night in their graves.

This continued for 5 nights until the 15th AV when they observed the full moon, they then realized their calculations were correct and rejoicing broke out as they realized that no more of that generation would die.

This is why the 15th AV – Tu B’AV is a day of celebration…

and always on a full moon.

In modern Israel it is a day of

romance and love – chag ahavah.

The word “Tu” ( ט”ו) is an acronym for 15 – derived from Tet (9) and Vav (6).

The phrase “Tu B’Av” indicates the 15th day of the month of Av 

(i.e., Chamishah Asar B’Av)

The wilderness generation had finally died and the new generation was ready to enter the land of promise.

The second national catastrophe was that The First Temple was Solomon’s Temple destroyed by Nebuchandnezar and the Neo-Babylonian Empire on the 9th of Av 3340 (423 BCE). 10,000 were killed and the remaining tribes in the southern kingdom were exiled to Babylon and Persia/Iran.

Next national catastrophe occurred when the Jews rebelled against Roman rule, they believed that their leader, Simon Bar Kochba, would fulfill their messianic longings. Their hopes were cruelly dashed in 3892/ 132 CE as over 100,000 of the Jewish rebels were brutally slaughtered in the final battle at Beitar as the battle was lost. The Beitar fortress was the last standing Jewish fortress in the Bar Kokhba revolt of the 2nd century CE, destroyed by the Roman army of Emperor Hadrian in the year 135. The site of historic Betar (also spelled Betar or Bethar), next to the modern Palestinian village of Battir, southwest of Jerusalem.

Next

One year after their conquest of Beitar, another catastrophe occurred at the Beit Hamikdash on the Temple Mount (Har HaBayit), Israels holiest site.

This happened in 3830 or 70 CE (500 years after the destruction of the First Temple), as the Roman empire under Emperor Titus, drew closer to the Second Temple in Jerusalem, and were about to torch it, the nation of Israel were shocked to realize that their Second Temple was destroyed on exactly the same day as the first led by a roman General named Turnus Rufus. Jerusalem was rebuilt as a pagan city and renamed Aelia Capitlina and all Jews were forbidden access.

Beit Hamikdash is the Hebrew phrase for the Temple that was first built by King Solomon.  (literally “The Holy House”)

A bayit is a house. Mikdash comes from kadosh, meaning holy. Beit Hamikdash

generally the term used is Churban HaBayit (literally, “the destruction of the House”).

The Temple was considered as:

the neck of the world.

The place where Heaven touches Earth, where mortals can feel eternity.

It was built in the time of Shlomo HaMelech, King Solomon, who was the son of King David, and was destroyed by Nebuchadnezzar II and the Babylonians after the Siege of Jerusalem in 587 BCE.

בֵּית־הַמִּקְדָּשׁ   Holy Temple

It was subsequently replaced with the Second Temple.

The purpose of the Beit Hamikdash was to inspire each individual to become a miniature Beit Hamikdash. So in the absence of the Beit Hamikdash, (which is no longer necessary since Messiah has come), we are to create God’s Temple within His own creation.

Much as the Babylonians destroyed the First Temple, as retaliation for an ongoing Jewish revolt, the Romans destroyed the Second Temple and Jerusalem in 70 CE.

The second temple lasted for a total of 585 years (516 BCE to 70 CE). Jewish eschatology includes a belief that the Second Temple will be replaced by a future Third Temple.

Yet another catastrophic event happened on 9th Av 1290 (5050). The Jews were expelled from England having been there since William the conqueror invaded in 1066 bringing with him the Jews that were living in Normandy, France.

The next catastrophe happened in In 1492, (5252).

The Golden Age of Spain came to a close when Queen Isabella and her husband Ferdinand ordered that the Jews be banished from the land.

The edict of expulsion was signed on March 31, 1492, and the Jews were given exactly four months to put their affairs in order and leave the country. The Hebrew date, year 5252, on which no Jew was allowed any longer to remain in the land where he had enjoyed welcome and prosperity. 

Known as The Inquisition in Spain and Portugal it culminated in the expulsion of the Jews from the Iberian Peninsula. Families were separated, many died by drowning and there was a massive loss of property. 

1492 also noted as the year Columbus ‘discovered America’.

On the 9th of Av saw the start of both world wars.

In 5674/1914 Britain and Russia declare war on Germany.

The First World War began.

Then, just a few years later in sept 1939/5699, came World War II and the Holocaust, ending on 2nd sept1945 /5705.

Historians speculate, the 2nd world war was actually the long drawn-out conclusion of World War I that began in 1914/5674 due to First World War issues being unresolved,

Incredibly Germany declared war on Russia, effectively catapulting the First World War into motion, on the 9th of Av, Tisha b’Av

Hebraic mindset sees this as another confirmation of the deeply held conviction that history isn’t haphazard; events – even terrible ones – are part of a Divine plan and have spiritual meaning. The message of time is that everything has a rational purpose, even though we don’t understand it.

This is the season of reading the Book of Lamentations and remembering the historical events that took place on Tisha b’Av. No wonder it is the Jewish day of mourning; the temple was destroyed the nation dispersed and they lost their homeland.

It is little wonder they approach this time of each year with a certain trepidation, as there is no word for coincidence in the Hebrew language, everything has a time and a purpose.

The timely caveat is for all believers to pray for the nation and the people of Israel; for the shalom of Yerushalayim/Jerusalem…

because, if we do not learn from history we seem destined to repeat it; and the western youth of today have not even the slightest clue of the horrors man can do to fellow man. Yes, God is in control, of course; however we are to pray without ceasing and when we don’t know about certain events or choose to downplay or ignore them, it shows a lack of wisdom concerning God’s mandate.

We have a part to play and we must be doers of that part for we are grafted in as part of spiritual Israel.

The key with God is that He never leaves nor forsakes us and especially His covenant family who are the apple of His eye. The Lord delivers him out of all his troubles.

God has delivered Israel time and time again and the fact that they are a prospering sovereign nation today is a miracle in itself. Many empires have risen and fallen and are lost to time and history.

Israel remains because they are in the palm of His hand and it is where He has put His Name.

Surely this is a picture of Hope/tikvah in its fullness, considering all Israel has endured throughout the millennia.

Their Hope/tikvah is in the Lord, the God of Israel, and His promise is always to restore and renew!

Their, and our, mourning will be turned into dancing and joy. Ps. 30:11

Pray their eyes are opened to see their Messiah is Yeshua.

As Moses anointed Joshua to lead the children of Israel into His promised land Messiah Yeshua will return to lead us all.

Blessed are they whose HOPE/tikvah is in the Lord… and they surely needed such an ANCHOR/O’gehn, to take them through all their times of testing.

For thou art my HOPE (tikvah), O Lord GOD: thou art my trust from my youth. (Ps. 71:5)
